Where do you get your digital photos printed? Or do you do them yourself?

I took some images into Boots this morning hoping to leave them but it's self service. Self Service?? Hang on, I come into the shop, produce the prints myself and then have to pay??

I have over 100 images I'd like printed so not sure really what's best. I never attempted to print quality prints from home before.

I print them myself, previously on a canon pixma ip4000 but now on my pixma MP600.

I have used truprint once, but found that the ones i printed on the ip4000 were just as good

Is there any tips you could give me for printing? paper quality.. is there anything I have to do to the image to get it on normal size photo paper. Bit of a newbie here.

I use a HP photosmart 325 bluetooth printer as I just use it for photos from my phone. Cost me about £40 with a staff discount last year but it probably costs that new now anyhow. Seems to print out quite good quality photos. :)
I bought my photo paper off ebay, and as it's designed just for photos it sorts out all the resizing stuff.
Certainly good for a budget choice imo.

Do I not have to resixe the image in "ImageReady" or something?

I've used Photobox before. You can store your pics online and pre-pay for photo credits. Quality and service have been very good.

That sounds like a good idea.

I think i'll have a go printing myself first and if no luck, i'll use them.

You probably won't be able to beat Photobox (http://www.photobox.co.uk) for price and quality. Its like 10p per 6x4 print now. I'd highly recommend them. They'll show if your image fits onto the paper size too and you can adjust things to fit. You'll get them next day too.

Well I need my pics for other people but if anyone does get a digital frame, DO NOT get the BT Digiframe! (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4BF7&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=frame&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=50910) :undecided:

Photobox would be the one I'd use too.

I got myself a compact dye sub printer recently as they're supposed to produce results that aren't as vulnerable to moisture as inkjet prints generally are. Haven't tried it yet but I have some candidates from Florida to try when I get time. :)

I can't praise them enough. Everything from 6x4 to giant canvas's to books to glass blocks with the photo etched inside. I use them for everything. A pack of wedding prints got lost in the post so they sent out a 2nd batch for me free of charge. Both turned up and the client was super happy :D

Ahh I thought I remembered photobox, I used to use them a while back because they were partners with CPW and I got 25 photos free so thought I'd see if they were any good.
From what I remember, they were good quality :)

Same here. I've had prints from 6"x4" all the way up to 30"x20" - most have arrived in 48 hours from ordering and have been great quality.

Not tried the books yet - but I will.

Plus their pro galleries work well and most importantly get money to the Vulcan to the Sky Trust. :D

Snapfish is another online photo printing company ...i believe they are now owned by HP same sort of prices as photobox and if you sign up now you get your first 20 prints free :)

I've just uploaded my pics to PhotoBox.. Selected the item to print.. There's an option for "Shrink to fit".

Shall I tick this or leave it unticked??

Another Photobox thumbs up here. I used them last year when I did some event photography and they were excellent.

Shrink to fir means the picture you have will be adjusted to fit into whatever size print you want without chopping off edges anywhere. It may mean you will end up with a smaller than you thought picture though. You can preview it though, I think.

Admiral Huddy
23-05-2007, 16:25
Does it reduce the quality?

Desmo
23-05-2007, 16:32
Quality should be unaffected. Only thing you might have is white borders on either top/bottom or left/right if the original photo isn't the same proportions as the one you're ordering.

Has anyone ever had any bigger photos done by photobox ?

I have an image that i would like to crop to fit an A3 frame

Flibster
23-05-2007, 18:45
Had everything up to and including the 30"x20"

A3 seems to be the most common size that I sell - quite a few 20"x8" as well.

The A2 version of this (http://www.photoboxgallery.com/sbfphotography/4517361) is truly superb.

Will get it framed eventually.

Simon/~Flibster

Two I had framed for my Dad's birthday last year.
http://www.flibster.com/Images/XH558-Roll-Out-31-08-2006/DSCF2987.jpg - 20"x8" print framed to edge of print
http://www.flibster.com/Images/XH558-Roll-Out-31-08-2006/DSCF2991.jpg - A3 print *image isn't the full A3* framed to the edge of the print. I wanted to keep this one.

Two that were framed for me.
http://www.flibster.com/Images/XH558-Roll-Out-31-08-2006/DSCF2995.jpg - A3 print framed to edge of print - dodgy photo.
http://www.flibster.com/Images/XH558-Roll-Out-31-08-2006/DSCF2996.jpg -12"x12" print - trimmed by about 2mm each side to get it to fit a bought frame. :D This one lives at work - I love it.

Now to find a frame !!!!!

Flibster

Next time I'm that way I'll bring a couple of the larger ones with me to you can take a look. Although by that time you'll have probably bought some yourself.

Could be several weeks as next week I'm off to Normandy for a tour of the D-Day beaches.

Thanks for that Simon

Now to find a frame !!!!!

Try the Norwich Framing Center if you're ever about there - out near Anglia Square. 01603 622 282
Not exactly cheap - but bloody good.

Got my photos back the next day. I have to say that the images look a little on the grey/dull side. i.e. not as colourfull as that of the image you see on screen. This has been the same with Boots and Tescos so I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong. Annoying when I'm looking a images I took ten years ago on a cheap 35mm are better quality than that of todays so called advancing techonology.. :(

That seems a little strange. I use them all the time for everything from my own prints on the wall to commercial work. Printing is always different to a screen, its the nature of things. It might be that your screen isn't properly calibrated?

Admiral Huddy
29-05-2007, 11:34
Does that make a difference because they are being sent straight from download. Only a few were edited?

Flibster
29-05-2007, 13:02
Did you get a calibration print from them?
If not sends them an email - generally it arrives very quickly.

Then you can match your screen to the print and then what you see on screen will be very close to the print.

Never had any problems myself though.

Sorry for sounding stupid :p - but if i'm downloading the pics from camera to HDD then uploading, then how does the monitor intervene?

Oh sorry, thought you meant you'd seen them on your screen. Any chance you've got a few you can upload so we can check? Not the prints, the JPG's.
