View Full Version : I love XBMC
If this is against the rules kill it, but I just needed to say how cool my current setup is. I have a program called TV Shows running on my Mac Mini with a 250gb HD connected. What this does is it allows me to subscribe to TV shows. Every 15 minutes it checks to see if there's a new episode out of my favourite show and downloads the torrent to Azureus. Azureus being clever it knows whats what and where to put it. From there I pop down stairs in the evening, update the library on XBMC and watch 'TV'. XBMC is also very clever. It doesn't list a dir full of stuff it lists shows, then by season and then by episode title. If I could only get XBMC to automate the update library bit I'd be laughing. Its awesome. I don't have to do anything apart from subscribe to things. Plus the Mini is super quiet so its easily on 24/7 and I plan to treat it to a 500GB drive soon. For backing up photos mainly ;) Shame that they're all ending this week though... :'(
Ooooh, now that sounds good :)
The TV Shows proggy, is there a PC version?
There is something called "Ted (http://www.ted.nu/)". Not sure how well it works but the OSX variant is awesome. Well, it can't subscribe to ER probably because of the short common title. I've also installed this lovely Apple TV (http://savvygeek.com/2007/03/27/how-to-turn-your-xbox-into-an-appletv/) theme.
Thanks for the thread Pete :D
You reminded me about Ted now, I used it once and had a mess around but it's more for a future plan when I have everything set up so I can watch downloaded stuff on a decent sized screen etc.
Main US thing I've been addicted to is Scrubs which just finished :( But could be good for future things.
I've seen it myself, tis very impressive indeed. If the xbox wasn't pretty loud, given how cheap you can get them on ebay for it'd make a great media center box.
I still can't hear the xbox over the pc :(
Perhaps most worryingly, the PC is so loud you can hear it in the kitchen directly below my room
When I'm into a show I don't notice the volume either. If I'm watching a film with 5.1 sound, I really don't notice :D I do like a quiet room. I turn off my PC if its not in use now because my Macbook Pro and Mini are silent. Need silent hard disks now because they're too loud ;)
Haven't samsung just released some??
omfg this bubble tip wont bugger off...just keeps coming up with errors relating to the tracker or something - Ted is getting closed down, its infuriating me!
omfg this bloody thing has downloaded the latest heroes ep and its got a password on the zip!!!! :

Pete,
What content are you watching on your 360 from your mac mini? Are you watching divx files? I have used connect 360 but that only does wmv and h264. The tvshows app is great and I think I mentioned TED to Daz a while back but had never tried it out.
You did indeed :) Newgroup access kind of negated the need though in the end :)
As far as I know XBMC hasn't been made for the 360 yet.
I'm using my old Xbox 1 not the 360. I've got Connect 360 but yeah its a shame it doesn't do on the fly transcoding :(

I'm searching and failing, but is there anything like TED for newsgroups? I'm not the biggest fan of torrents, i can see they serve a purpose but newsgroups are much quicker and hassle free (no sharing/leeching rate or whatever). Sounds a good idea, i get along fine downloading episodes as i remember them normally a few at a time (because i've forgotten a week or two on the trot) but something automated would be excellent... I might have look into something like this for my flat next year.
Can't say I've had any issues so far in the past week. I wake up and my shows are already downloaded. It checks every 15 minutes on multiple sources and they usually come out around 3am. I get up at 10ish :D

Oh i'm not downplaying Torrents, as i said loads of people get on with them. But theres always the sharing issue which is technically the illegal activity. Newsgroups you don't share so your covered moreso than torrents where you are forced to share (otherwise the whole torrent network would fail). So i'd have to take possible extra precaution peer guardian or whatever its called and people use now days that i haven't done for years now because of newsgroups. There are tracker sites for newsgroups too know under different names, and instead of torrent files there are the equivilent for newsgroups, so i assume it wouldn't be that hard to port over, but i don't seem to be able to find anything :(
Ah I see. I think torrents have a bigger community around them and more people are working on fun things for that side rather than good old newsgroups. I would have thought, given how long they've been running, that there's something you could do or get.
Pete, (or anyone else) do you have a copy of XBMC on disc?
I've got an old chipped xbox in bits in th kitchen that I plan(ned) to turn into a media box but it kinda stalled when I couldn't get Slayers dashboard on it.
I got mine from this site (http://217.118.215.116/). Works well enough.
