I'd be interested to know what kind of speeds people are getting against their quoted speeds.
Here's mine

That's 10Mb Virgin Media XL, using the London node to test :)

PlusNet, also using London (it recommended Maidenhead but as most of PN's equipment is in London I chose there instead).

This is our backup SDSL line as our main line is a bit **** at the moment. Good latency though

This is just our standard ADSL Line
http://www.speedtest.net/result/129502442.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
That's our POS line - which is getting replaced by an NTL fibre soon!
Done to satisfy my own curiosity later when I do one from home, this is from my own DSL line at work:

Okay, so that was from work. I can get quicker too from the data centre suite, here in the head office I'm stuck on our shared line to the DC.
Oh and to London:

That's on Plusnet, on their "Up to 8MB" package. I generally get faster speeds later on at night (around 5500kb/s), but the upload and latency generally remain the same.
Looking forward to our 4mb fibre we're getting - still not going to be able to get one up from Jarp on the upload, however the latency will be very similar. :)

Absolute rubbish for a top of the range Eclipse line, that's supposed to be an 8Mb connection and I'm connected at just about 6. I'll try and remember to run it again in the morning when it's quiet as we're into peak now.

With free download manager maxing the connection out i've hit close to 40mbit so i'm not sure how accurate those tests are. Also everyone seems to be absolutely raping our network with DC++ before we all leave which might not be helping!

Oops, turns out I might have been blaming my flatmates unfairly, apparantly we are only meant to have a 2mb line anyway. :embarassed: I'm not sure though as I've downloaded at 300kb/s+ quite often for relatively small (~10mb) files. :)

Zen 8MB service, to be fair to the service it is running over a 802.11b network with two other devices in the room, so the bottleneck is probably in my network rather than the line or their network. Still going to sort out Ethernet when I decide exactly where everything is going.

I wouldn't normally advise it, but if you have no wires installed and your using wireless atm, why not just upgrade to 802.11g (or n if you are feeling very flush!) And a new wireless card in your PC/Laptop. Instant speed boost and still no wires! :)

IMHO 802.11 is a flawed concept, there isn't enough space in the 2.4GHz (or for that matter 5GHz) spectrum to keep up with the uptake of "WiFi" / "Wireless" enabled devices, not to mention that so due to a lack of foresight any 802.11b
device effectively gimps a 802.11g/n network on the same channel to provide backwards compatibility.
Practically although G networks are billed as 54mbps typical throughput is unlikely to go above 20mbps, with more and more congested frequencies, increased requirements for encryption and 802.11g chip sets getting cheaper and less efficient, I can't see 802.11g being a worthwhile investment.
Wireless connection
Wireless B, G or N?
All IMHO of course.

Erm...I wouldn't trust speedtest.net it's highly unreliable and I thought that was obvious.
Why's that? :/
And even if it is, it's good enough for what she's meant for - an indicative, quick speed for comparison with others.
Well a test that says I have a 2mb connection yet I can download at 1.2 mb/s (which is what I SHOULD get on 10mb) is hardly reliable. Either way, each to their own.
I can go on say tonight and get a result equal to 2mb. I can then go and download at my full speed from a proper source. Sorry I guess I'm just sick of all this speedtest.net stuff. People come on the blueyonder newsgroups raving about their connection due to speedtest.net results...when it's in no way a good representative of actual speeds.
I just wouldn't use it tbh.

Pretty happy with the results from a 10meg NTL link.
A quick question for you web guru peeps :)
Been having slow surfing the past couple of days and really terrible pings whilst playing Guild Wars so thought I'd do a quick speed test.
Speedtest.net gave me a down speed of about 800kb/s not good for a 4mb line.
ADSLguide.org gave approx the same reading.
Upload speed is fine at 380kb/s.
I tested again this morning before work and got full speed, about 4000kb/s
Tested when I got in from work about 4.30 back down to 800kb/s and pings on GW are over 1000ms
Tested at the download bit that Robert posted earlier (http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk) and get full speed of 480kb/s
Tried Garps speedtest that was linked earlier that gave me a bandwidth of 380kb/s
Does anyone have any ideas why all speed tests, surfing and gaming pings are so bad but I can download from some servers at full speed?
Hope all that make sense and thanks in advance for advise.
Oh and I have rebooted the modem and tried it straight to my PC without the router in the way :)
Bandwidth throttling by your ISP at peak times?
According to their site they only throttle if you've downloaded more than 750mb between 4pm and midnight and Ive made certain that I havent done that for ages.
Also I thought that would have throttled the download speed I get from servers as well as ping/surfing speeds?
I'll try the speedtests again just before and just after midnight.
If they go from slow to fast then I'll be on the phone to them when I get up tomorrow.

Simple answer is that NTL suck :p
More complicated answer is that anyone not on XL Broadband with Virgin on an NTL connection is suffering at the moment. The infrastructure has not been properly upgraded yet and so to ensure that all XL customers are receiving their upgraded speed everyone else is suffering. Telewest areas aren't too bad but are still getting drops.
The biggest problem is that even if you do ring up and complain then you'll not get anywhere due to some fantastic wording in the contract (which I'm yet to sign as I never received it) which states "speeds up to XXmb/s".
One day things will be better, I suspect we'll be too old to care by then though :/
*Thanks God for being on TW*
Seriously though - they are putting some serious effort into upgrading their infrastructure. They are doing some serious work in pompey - as the network was dodgey as they bought it from Eurobell in the 80s I think. They are currently making MAJOR changes to fix certain aspects of the network and to upgrade it to 20mb.
I haven't noticed any problems yet :p
I know I'm the boring one that rarely has any problems with NTL but so far I seem to be doing fine with my download speeds. :D

Britain 'failing' net speed tests (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6924866.stm)
They do actually have a point - it's actually impossible to get 8Mbps on a standard ADSL line, so for 'rare', substitute 'non-existant'. According to PlusNet, the best you can get is 7.15Mbps...

Okay, so we've got the backbone to allow a few customers to do that when necessary but..
At the time of the first spike he was only supposed to be on 100Mb b/w with 200Mb burst, but some numpty had removed the limit. Networks spotted and capped it again. He managed to persuade them to allow up to 500Mb just for the weekend until he could arrange something more permanent this week. The 100/200 connection was worth in the ball park of 4.5k - 5k pcm. Hate to think what his re-negotiated bill is worth.

'tis indeed. Really frustrating. Even simple things like SSH connections to my server can be dire. A complaint was lodged with Virgin Support a couple of days ago, awaiting a response. Pointed out very clearly that I don't see the point in paying for a 20Mb service when we're getting less speed than cheaper lower speed packages (6Mb).
Even simple things like SSH connections to my server can be dire.
Latency issues or connectivity issues, just out of curiosity?
Latency I'd assume. I had the same when PN were being crap (what's new, I hear you ask) and packet shaping SSH to hell and back because they treated it as P2P traffic. :/
because they treated it as P2P traffic. :/
Proper harsh that. Whoever made that call needs shooting :/

Speed and latency. Of an evening we've literally been bouncing between <1Mb to maybe 4Mb on a good day. The lag on typing suggests latency is near crippling. I'm just glad I don't play online games or I would probably be livid with the "service" :)

Thats probably because some people have figured out you can poke usenet and torrent traffic through an SSH tunnel to avoid traffic shaping, if you so desire.
Oh aye but to decide that a network/service wide throttle was needed to deal with what must be a small footprint of people/bandwidth seems harsh. With all the open source monkeys out there surely all the legitimate traffic far outways the dodgy stuff?

we're a small part of the market still, and people were selling tunnelling services so I've heard *shrug*
We don't bother with traffic shaping at the moment tbh, but I imagine the day will come (unless BT make the prices of DSL pipes more reasonable)
There was talk of BT re-pricing centrals. Did that not happen/not going to happen?

gotta love bein at work :D
'tis indeed. Really frustrating. Even simple things like SSH connections to my server can be dire. A complaint was lodged with Virgin Support a couple of days ago, awaiting a response. Pointed out very clearly that I don't see the point in paying for a 20Mb service when we're getting less speed than cheaper lower speed packages (6Mb).
i did the same about a month ago. sadly nothing has changed so i'm leaaving them. be they're GUTTED that i'm away.
trying to play WoW on this can be hell some evenings.

I am toying with the idea of switching my down to 4MB. I got sucked into the whole E Penis connection trip when it got released but it really isn't needed. I game less & less these days & thinking about it i gamed quite succesfully on much less than 4 meg back in the day.

With 3 - 4 people in the house who use the internet connection, the extra bandwidth would always be appreciated. I also wanted it because of the higher cap when traffic shaping occurs (after 2Gig of downloads, during peak hours the speed gets capped to 6Mb) which enables me to still be able to work from home when on call.
TBH if this continues I'll look into getting BT to reactivate the phone line in the hall and see what decent broadband options we can get.

Actually it's after 3gb and it gets reduced to 5mb ;)
No problems with Vm here....(aka blueyonder).

Actually it's after 3Gb and yeah, you're limited to 5Mbit down/256Kbit up.
I meant 3gb
Seriously I did...typo :)

Last I heard, nope. We still can't afford to buy an additional DSL pipe from BT without wiping out our profit margins entirely, and we're far from the cheapest ISP.

That is Zen again but without the Wireless network in the way, st.tstools.co.uk gives me 5022.69 Kbps.
The connection at work was upgraded a few months back...

I don't know what connection that is, but do I look like I care? ;D
PS - If you want a little speed boost, minimise your web browser as soon as possible after starting the test and leave it for a minute or so. There will be no fancy graphics to update (and slow the test down). Over VPN this makes a huge difference, but it'll be less if you're going direct.

Nothing fancy in my flat in Ed, but then it is the lowest Virgin package, at least its the correct speed though :D
This is how much Eclipse are throttling at the moment.

At least we've got them to acknowledge there is a congestion issue and have a promise of a fix... though I'll believe it when I see it.
Generally its been better in the evenings since I phoned them, though still a long way from the 5Mb/sec cap.
edit: Oh, and speedtest.net is crap. I've just succesfully downloaded from the Ubuntu archives at nearly 20Mb/sec speeds, and yet speedtest is telling me we've got a 3Mb connection.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/188404024.png
UKFSN off peak so everyone is hammering the connection. Note that this is more line speed limited rather than crap throughput

From home, supposed to 4mb down with ntl, so with this it's not too bad. If I actually download a regular file I get the full speed.
My download speeds are great, I can get > 2Mb/s but browsing speed is absolutely horrific - it takes anything up to a minute for pages to start to load.
I thought at first it was DNS being slow but it isn't.
Is your foot on the cable? :p
I've had that problem this morning too, and not just with the forum. Seems to be clearing now though.
I wasn't referring to the forum, Mark, I was talking in general.
Aye - I did say it wasn't just with the forum. Had trouble with sites like Wikipedia too.

What are your ping times like?
WinMTR will help (or MTR if you're using *nix) as you can leave that running a while.

Well i am happy with my speeds since dropping from 20 to 4. I haven't noticed a difference in gaming & am still one of the first on a 64 man BF2 map. RFactor plays as well as it has always done & browsing is still speedy.
I'm glad i switched down :)

I'm glad i switched down :)
What was your reason for switching, malc? I assume you're on cable?

^^ My last bill had less discount & was 45 quid instead of 35.I just thought to myself **** i used to play on loads less & do well so why am i paying for more than i needed. I rang them and asked about deals & they offered me 4 meg a Large TV ppackage & my house phone for just over 20 quid. I told them i would think about it. Anyway after a week i though sod it I'm switching down & rang them again. I said "I want to switch down from 20 to 4" The bloke said you already did mate a week ago ;D
I had played BF2 & RFactor during that week thinking i was on 20. Like i said there is no difference in gaming or browsing & that was a proper field test even if i didn't ask for it :D
All sounds fair to me, I guess that it's noticeable when downloading shedloads but just not for normal use.
Good call
I HAS INTERNETS
i'm just checking if the 4 meg result i got is due to this laptop or not though.
14 down and 1 up make me a happy rikki.
Just out of interest, this is what I get at work:

I'll try to remember to do my home one tonight...
Ok, here it is:

Thats off an 8MB ADSL24 line.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/210462843.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
Not too bad do far, though I'm within their 10 day 'optimisation' period. Sync'd at 8MB though so I'm pleased with that. When they go ADSL2 next year it could be a pretty good line here.
My home connection

gotta love this speed. makes for good FTP use (abuse)
will post my crappy shared flat interwebs speed later... 8mb or something but the ping to most things is crazy.. 60 one second, 360 the next. Makes for some annoying CoD4 - emptied nearly a whole RPD ammo box into a guy last night, then he turned around a killed me.

Not too bad for a 2Mb line :)
I'm using wi-fi and the signal is rather poor, so I used this to make sure I'm good to go for Skype.

Check out the location. :D
The problem with speedtest.net is that it throws up totally inaccurate results. I can get 5mb on speedtest and 20mb on the newsgroups.
Although I'm sure you all know this.
