Don't quite know what to make of it to be honest. One part of me thinks they are just doing it just because they can and hope to get something out of it. I know some people have had display problems but to launch a lawsuit?? :huh:

Very interesting, in some ways I hope they succeed, if only to get across to advertisers that misleading claims such as the above should not be acceptable. PCs have been just as guilty of course - the P4 making the internet come alive or whatever it was and the essential need for dual core to multitask etc.

Leowyatt, having read through most of the brief, I can see why they could justifiably claim that the lawsuit was necessary, if it is not fit for purpose (graphical design being the main one) then they should have some right of relief. :)

The whole computer industry seems to be like this, as mentioned you get pentium processors that make the internet faster, and bring everything to life. Hard drives which are mis represented (more so than ever the bigger they get!). I feel sorry for the "non techies" buying their laptops and computer, because its bloody confusing out there! You can't rely on any advertising or sales pitch at all... Something should really be done...

Its not just computing. In the US the Canon 400D is called the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. Er what? Its not a car ffs. You get the sodding ATI vs Nvidia gfx card war with brand names, numbers and again you'd think it was a car. Nvidia 8800 GTS. I hear the next gen card will be a TDCI model. They need something, anything to market so they make up nonsense and market it. People buy it. In the UK the Canon 400D is the Canon 400D and it sells.

Grahpics cards are getting worse every generation ATI are heading the stupidity. XXXTXXX-X etc... Its nuts, then youve got performace grading in processors intel and AMD basically make up what they think the performance of their processors are? The list goes on! What happened to the good old days :(

Sadly there never has been 'good old days'.
Skip back to the Pentium / K5 days and you had intel saying "133Mhz" and AMD saying "133+" because a K5-133 outperformed a P133. That confused people that don't understand what is occurring inside a processor from a technical perspective. Things got even more confusing when a 1.8Ghz AMD Athlon out performed a 2.4Ghz P4.. then we got the daft buggers of XP-2400 being advertised and lots of people then complaining to the shops that their "2400 Mhz chip was only running at 1800Mhz"

Graphics cards have always been advertised badly as long as I can remember.
Back before 3DFX and the first 3D cards it wasn't too bad, you just had to grapple your way through "True Color" "High Color" and the like. The moment 3D Cards came out everything got a lot more confusing and pretty much reached the state we're in now. I don't bother keeping up with the market to be honest. Instead whenever I find myself in a position of wanting to upgrade or needing to make a purchase, I start reading sites like anandtech and toms hardware to get an idea of what is and isn't good.
