View Full Version : Don't use Azureus
For a good number of years I have used azureus to download torrents. However they have now released a new client addition called vuze that you must download when you get the latest version. This is in collaberation with various film/broadcasters.
From what has happened in the past, this thing is now very likely to be reporting what you are downloading back to HQ to pass on. Currently they say that this is not happening.... but look at Kazaa/Limewire. I very rarely use torrents now anyway but just incase people still are.... this is a warning to you :)
You know you need Giganews!!

Giganews is a bit sledgehammer to crack a nut. Newshosting or any of the slightly cheaper ones will still be more productive for longer than a torrent, probably faster, and no sharing.

Right then - I won't download the latest version. ;)
Hardly use it anymore anyway.

I use newgroups as well now. Hopefully the masses will stay away from them as they are currently for more techy people. If the masses move to newsgroups then we will have hell and all trouble.
What newsgroup type of thing do people recommend for a numpty user? Getting plished off with emule being rubbish for the last year or so. I'm not a heavy user so cheap = good :)
edit: ignore, used search :)

Without a doubt newsleecher (yeah get the paid version, pay if you wish). Sign up to newshosting for cheapish great access and pretty decent retention, and sign up to NewzBin for an index to the whole of usenet (newsgroups).
Done :)
I used to use Azureus but switched to Bitcomet recently, so thanks for the warning :)
Boooooooooooo! :(
Can I just not DL any updates?

Hmmmm. I <3 Azureus. I love its web interface and plugins and such. I'm not sure if I'm running this extra fun plugin or not. I think I'll do some research and maybe look at the other OSX ones.
I didn't like Azureus when I tried it recently so I went back to ABC. Glad I did now that I've read this.
Ok I've done a quick bit of digging and I can't find anything to support this. There's nothing in the Azureus changelog about Vuze. Its not listed as a plugin. There's nothing on Digg about this either. Vuze is basically Azureus 3 and if you want you can still get v2. Unless you've got a real source to back this up I'm sticking with Az.
Will Azureus send a list of what I download to other people?
No! As mentioned before, the source code is available on Sourceforge, so if you're not happy to take our word for it, go and check it out.
The Vuze UI will check for updates of the metadata (thumbnail, title, rating, etc) of Vuze content. The classic UI does not. Vuze does not store these new metadata requests anywhere. It simply reads the request and returns the metadata.. much like how winamp brings up track info about the CD you are playing. - Azureus wiki (http://azureuswiki.com/index.php/Azureus_2_and_Vuze)
You are correct Pete and from my opening post this is my own opinion in the matter and that Azureus states this is currently not happening. Now since Azureus is looking to tie in with bbc distributing films and the other film industries.I am going back to dec 2006 when this was announced
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6194929.stm
Now I have no proof and this is purely my cynical nature behind this, but since when has a p2p software tied in with a major label and not then monitored the network?
I do understand what you're saying. I remember when the guy who ran Supernova joined up with the big companies then launched his new torrent network. No-one I knew would touch it. However, since Az is open source I do feel that the minute there was proof of this it would be big news. As long as you don't switch to Az3 and stick with 2.x I think you'll be fine.

Feek told me to use ABC...
I use ABC...
That is all...
:p
Use bitcomet, looks and feels the same as Azureus but no Java needed and works just as well if not better.
