View Full Version : DS Lite?

I've received a voucher for a 50% reduction for a DS Lite - I got it through an online business account we have at work - should I get one? Are they worthwhile? I had a play on a friend's one recently and I have to say it brought me back to the gameboy days (just a bit more fun ;)) and I was quite impressed. Apparently it's a lot more versatile than being *just* a hand held console? Is that right? You can also be naughty and download games and store them on a card?

Anyway, I've got a few days to make up my mind, or I can just get credit on our account... It's a gadget, and I love gadgets, but will I use it and become addicted to it? Is it actually as good as my impression of it was very briefly? Or am I just craving gadgets?

It is good (we have one each), you can download games and play them off a memory card (have to buy a couple of bits), and yes, they're great fun :)

I'd go for it at that price :)
You can indeed play downloaded games as well as homebrew stuff (Including some applications) with the smartcard and cartridge. Burble will be an expert on that as it was him that converted us lot :D

Its a cracking bit of kit. The best bit of tech I have brought in years bar none. I mainly use mine to keep me occupied on the train and its great at that, with the suspend feature its excellent. Ie start playing a long mario level close, then reopen a few hours later at the exact same point.

The cards were £50 to download all the games onto. Once you have done that check out btemuparadise.org for the nds games. You can get it to play mp3's and there is a web browser to connect via wireless. I haven't tried this though so I can't comment on quality.

The last handheld I thought was any good was the original gameboy/ gamegear. I never bothered getting another one till I thought blow it and brought one at kidderminster. I challenge you to play osu! tutakae! ouden! and not burst out laughing at random points

Ahh ok - I shall bug him about it then ;) Hmmm very tempted! Dammit....

btemuparadise.org doesn't seem to work, but I've found: http://www.nintendo-ds-roms.com ?

Right... time to pester Burble! ;D

eek, its gone down. It was there fine the other week. The address is actually emuparadise.org. The torrent tracker is bt.emuparadise.org:8889

There might be server issues as its been there for years. Infact just go to somewhere like btjunkie and search for "nds roms"

What are these cards.. explain to an utter noob :D

leowyatt
31-05-2007, 15:04
They allow you to download roms off the web and play them on your DS. So you can have 20-30 games on 1 memory card and they are freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :) well the games are anyway. The kit will probably set you back £40+

Sounds great - and you buy them from the links above?

Where do you get the software?

Will
31-05-2007, 15:12
You need a superkey plus supercard, then a microsd card and you're away basically.

http://www.consoleplus.co.uk/product_info.php?=&pName=supercard-lite-black-and-superkey-bundle

Something like that. Then you need a separate microsd card - I got a 2gb one from:

https://www.lowpricememory.co.uk/micro.html at £14 it's pretty good going.

Ah, this reminds me....must acquire some more games for my holiday :D

Admiral Huddy
31-05-2007, 17:00
so when you got the 3 pieces of kits, where do you get the games from.. and what do you do on the PC?

Desmo
31-05-2007, 17:09
Games are downloaded from torrents or newsgroups or sent by us :p

You then just run them through a proggy on the PC to patch them, copy to the memory card, slot this into the DS supercard and play away :)

Admiral Huddy
31-05-2007, 17:26
what's the proggy ?

Will
31-05-2007, 17:41
hey Will, when you've got the stuff, give us a bell and me or Leo can send you the links to the roms we've got hosted, they've got about 100 games in each

I love my DS soooooo much *strokes* Spent the entire flight there and back to Spain revisiting Resident Evil :D Brought back loads of memories of days locked in my room gaming, a few years back :D

Will do!!! Thanks!! :D

Desmo

Wooohoo - it's arrived in the UK, it'll be at work tomorrow! :D I can't wait... I've currently downloaded about 60% of the ROMS....

Will
11-06-2007, 11:42
Well, I'm LOVING it. Really such a great little gadget - so glad I got it. Made my trip to Holland much more bearable! Hmmm there goes my book reading though... :embarassed:

Even got ScummVM working on it too - so I have my lucasarts games on there - superdooper! :D

Thanks for your help with all the bits and pieces - unfortunately I use WPA at home so wireless connectivity might be tough, but I'll try and sort something and put my friend code for some of the games in due course.

Oh does anyone have the ROM for Final Fantasy... I've only been able to get the Jap version :(

Haly
11-06-2007, 11:44
Glad you're liking it :D
Which Final Fantasy do you want? I've got the rom for 3 I think.

Will
11-06-2007, 11:46
Yes that's the one! :D There are a few games that only seem to be Jap versions though - are there other places bar that nintendo roms site I can get them from?

Other suggestions game wise? I've got about 50 installed at the moment (+ scummVM games, Monkey island 2, indiana jones and sam and max).

Quite enjoying the brain training games :embarassed:

Haly

I mainly get mine off torrent sites as you tend to be able to download tons of them at a time :)
Just getting FF sorted for you now.

I find NDS Release Lister (http://ndslister.emubase.de/show_nds5.en.html) is a good source for whats out, and Frozen Roms (http://www.frozen-roms.net/index.php?show=news&lang=en) is a good place for most Nintendo roms.

You're welcome. :)

A good puzzle/rpg game is Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, basically Bejeweled meets rpg, one of my three most played games right now.

Haly
11-06-2007, 22:18
I've got that :) Hardly played it though, same with FF3.
Mainly got Puzzle Quest because it seemed the kind of game my Mum would love but she's hooked on Bust a Move :p

We're off to the states tomorrow and upon examining Kitten's DS Lite charger it appears it only works on 230V is this the case?

Will it charge in the US or would we need to get al el-cheapo charger while we are over there? I'd have though most power supplies would switch.

Will
22-08-2007, 10:05
You'll need a switch mode power supply. It just won't work - I tried to plug in a soldering iron which was rated at only 230v - it hardly even got tepid! :p

If it doesn't say 100~230V AC then it won't switch I'm afraid :(

leowyatt

bollocks that is what I thought. I think a trip to Target when we get there might be in order otherwise someone will be rather unhappy :D
