View Full Version : Vista performance scores

I just installed Vista for a quick play (I've got to go back to XP for now as some stuff I need isn't quite Vista-ready yet, and I'm using an MSDN license so will need to buy the real deal).

Anyway, I got a base performance score of 4.2 :-

CPU 4.2, Memory 4.5, Graphics 5.9, Gaming 4.9, Hard disk 5.6

Am I likely to run into any problems with those scores?

PS - The scores are way better than I expected from a system that was built in October 2003 (though to be fair it's been upgraded a fair bit since then).

PPS - Biggest disappointment so far given the age of the system - no network or SCSI drivers. If anyone can help me find drivers for 3com 3c940 I'd appreciate it.

You've got a higher base score than I've got with the PC I bought a few days ago :p Although it was a dirt cheap PC.
My scores are: CPU 4.8, Memory 4.5, Graphics 3.4 (Integrated), Gaming 3.4, Hard Disk 5.7.
So I got overall of 3.4 because of the poor graphics but it runs aero fine so not bothered in the slightest. Could hardly afford the PC (especially as I relied on getting a job now heh) so graphics weren't at the forefront of my mind :D

You're going to be fine - What video card are you using that's giving you a graphics score of 5.9 though?

Radeon X800 XT PE (or some other random letters) on AGP. That and the HDDs are the only post-2003 items.

If I can solve the networking problem (lack of drivers beyond early 2004), the hacked SB Live! drivers I found work, and Nebula sort out their Vista incompatibilities, I may well reinstall again.

3Com 3c940 = Marvel Yukon 88E8001

Do I understand? No. Do I care? No. Once I got online Windows said there was a 3Com driver update. ;D

That just leaves the Neb and getting legal. :)

I scored an overall score of 4.5 I think and it ran like hot **** off a shovel. I'm back to xp64 as I prefer it, but Vista Ultimate even on my ageing PC ate it for breakfast. :)

Yeah, I'm going to go back to XP tomorrow as I need it for work and I know what I'm doing with XP for now. I suspect it'll not be long though. And there was me saying a few months ago that I wouldn't touch Vista.

:numpty: ;D

And I thought I was doing badly ;D
I'll upgrade mine once I'm not bothered about the warranty and can actually afford it.

I'm not sure whether this is down to drivers or Vista, but if I open the sound mixer I get two volume sliders and that's it. My card has loads of inputs and even a standard card has more than one. In XP even without installing any drivers I get five volume sliders and options to add another 7-8 more.

I don't want to have to buy a new soundcard but I suspect it's finally time that I have to (the old one is about 10 years old so it's had a good run).

Any ideas? :)

If you do end up buying a new sound card stay the hell away from creative..i spent 60 quid on a sound card last year and its now worth a **** in vista till crative sort out drivers that make all the options work

I got a base performance score of 4.5:

CPU 4.9, Memory 4.5, Graphics 5.9, Gaming 5.9, Hard disk 5.2

Surprised at the memory score, although i only have 1gig it is relatively quick stuff, Geil 6400.

Still won't let me play STALKER though :(.

EDIT

Well i sort of can now, was completely unplayable on XP but on Vista if i turn in game performance to low and set the ATI drivers to high performance i can just about play it. Takes an age to load and quit and jerks all over the place still though :(.

I'm the same as Haly. Well except this is my laptop that i was going on and on about a few months ago before i bought it.

Processor 4.9
Memory 4.5
Graphics 3.7
Gaming graphics 3.4
Primary 4.7

Graphics are Geforce GO 7400, good old vista drivers are actually completely impossible to get for this go series for some reason. Not bad for a 12" lappy though. Definately does the job!

I think i've heard the memory perfomance is only based on how much you have, not how fast it is.

That's what they say (http://www.boat-drinks.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3674&highlight), but it isn't clear really.

Mark
08-06-2007, 10:21
That seems likely, otherwise there'd be a difference between 1GB of PC3200 and 1GB of PC6400. :)

(my 3-year-old system is using Corsair XMS PC3200 and it scored 4.5, same as with PC6400)

Ah k, makes sense but is a little silly.

Is it the same with H/D's then? As in speed doesn't matter just how much storage you have.

Daz
08-06-2007, 11:37
I imagine it's a small factor (a 10GB drive isnt very useful these days), but it's mostly based on memory bandwidth. My 2 drive stripe scores highly, where my laptop drive not so good (7200rpm it may be but it's still a laptop drive, suffers on seek time traditionally).

Total memory isn't the ultimate factor in the memory score, I have 3Gb fitted of what I thought was reasonably fast RAM but I don't have a stunningly good memory score, I think it's about 4.8 at stock speeds. Overclocking the PC did increase that but I'm back at defaults now.

Stan_Lite
08-06-2007, 19:49
I got mine installed the other day and tested it before and after overclocking and got exactly the same scores both times

Can't remember offhand what all the scores were but my overall was 4.6 - which was my memory (2Gb of PC8000 -thought that would do better).

CPU was predictably high - I think it was 5.3, as was my graphics at 5.9.

HDD was a bit low as well iirc - there's just a bog standard 7200 rpm SATA in there atm but will be replaced at some point by striped Raptors (might even consider an SSD drive for the O/S in the future  )

Haven't had a chance to have a proper play yet due to packing and moving. Will try to tweak things and improve on my scores once I'm settled.

I assume you hit the button to recalculate the scores as it doesn't do it automatically. :)

My hard disk is just a standard 400GB Samsung Spinpoint, so nothing special except for it being big. :)

Indeed I did.

I like Spinpoints - I have several in other rigs and think they're bloody good drives.
Can't remember exactly what my HDD is but I think it's an 80Gb (temporary) Hitachi Deskstar.

Managed to raise my RAM score by 0.1 by overclocking - got it running at 900MHz with timings of 4-4-4-12 now. Should be able to run at over 1000MHz (it's rated speed) but may have to slacken the timings a bit - dunno if I'll get my score any higher but I'll have a go.

Scores for my gaming rig are:

CPU - 5.9
RAM - 4.7
GFX - 5.9
GFX (Gaming) - 5.9
HDD - 5.3

So, overall score of 4.7.

Ahem.

Had a look on CPU-Z to see exactly what my settings were and noticed that my RAM was running in single channel mode - turns out, some noob had put the memory in the wrong slots :embarassed:

New scores:

CPU - 5.9
RAM - 5.3
GFX - 5.9
GFX (Gaming) - 5.9
HDD - 5.3

So, overall score of 5.3.

I'm sure I can get that RAM score up a bit yet but that won't affect my overall score, which will then be limited by the HDD. That won't improve until I get the Raptors.

One single 80Gb SATA drive at the moment. I just used that as a temporary disk until I can afford to get two Raptors to set up RAID0 on - simply to get that slight edge. I know the real world advantage will be virtually unnoticeable for most applications but I just fancy having the score that little bit higher.

Flippin 'eck.

I've had a bit of a play and upped the overclock a bit (I can afford to since it won't be running flat out 24/7 like before). I've also had a tweak with the memory - which is now running at 1066Mhz with timings of 5-5-5-15. I ran the performance tests and the memory score jumped from 5.3 to 5.5. I then set the bank cycle time (Trc) from 30 (on auto) to 1 since the SPD tab in CPU-Z told me I could have it at 0 on 5-5-5-15. I re-ran the test and lo and behold, it shot up to 5.9

My scores now stand at:

CPU - 5.9
RAM - 5.9
GFX - 5.9
GFX (Gaming) - 5.9
HDD - 5.3

Can't wait to get the Raptors and see how much my HDD score improves.

I'm well pleased.

My 3DMark06 score is 12478 and it does 1M Superpi in 17.344s.

I know most of this stuff is meaningless in the real world but I enjoy tweaking things to try to get the most out of them - it keeps me off the streets :p

To give an indication, my striped Samsungs are 5.9, and your Raptors will be quicker :)

Sounds like we're about to see a bank of 5.9's across the board. Not quite Torvill and Dean standard (6.0), but close. ;D

Shame it won't be folding with all that power but like I said in the other thread I don't blame you for taking that decision.

Relatively painless.

By God, she's quick :D

Second drive wasn't detected for a while. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and all was well - must've been a loose connection.

Vista install said it didn't have drivers so had to use the Nvidia ones I downloaded yesterday.

All working fine now - thanks for your help :)

Bit of a hairy moment earlier. I got an X-Fi sound card for the rig as I hadn't brought the card which came with the mobo with me.

All seemed to be well for a while but then the speakers started crackling and popping. A quick Google suggested that a BIOS update could possibly fix the problem so an update was performed using the handy ASUS update tool.
I duly rebooted and to my horror, I got a message saying "missing operating system"

I was stymied for a bit but after some thought, it dawned on me that the BIOS would have reverted to default settings during the update - including the SATA settings. A quick dig in the BIOS confirmed my suspicion and the RAID was quickly reinstated and all was well - except that the update hasn't helped with the crackling - crappy Creative rubbish

Nice one :D

I thought so :D

What memory do you have, Stan?

It's this (http://www.nintek.com.au/x/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=6693) stuff. Not much of a review but it's the best I could find in a hurry.

Apparently, it'll do 1100MHz @ 4-4-4-12 on 2.35v - I may try it sometime.

I feel your pain with Creative soundcards. I just haven't found anything good enough to replace mine yet. :/

Sounds about right - I'm sure I saw somewhere that someone with an X2 4600+ had a CPU score of 5.2 so your 5.0 sounds right.

On the sound front, I found a Trust card in the local Maplins for £30 that has vista drivers - it works a treat \o/.

Apparently Creative cards have serious issues with Nvidia chipsets - especially the 680 (mine  ).
Until they sort their issues (apparently Creative and Nvidia are working together to come up with drivers (chipset and sound card) that eliminate this problem), a little advice to you all - If you buy a motherboard with an Nvidia chipset (especially the 680), just use the onboard sound for now (assuming you haven't left the add in PCI card up north :embarassed: ) and wait until the driver issues have been sorted before trying to use a Creative card.

Mines currently at 5.6, my RAM isn't being clocked at the moment and I know it will do better as it's the G.Skill HZ DDR2 Ram that holds/held the record for clocks etc..

But I will have to go back to my 6800 Ultra from my friends 7800GTX tomorrow :(.
