Scarily enough this is only like 8 weeks away and I was wondering what people were thinking of cooking/bringing along for the theme?

Elvis special: baguette, heavily buttered, lots of peanut butter, several rashers of fried bacon.

It's actually delicious, uh huh huh it is :)

Well I was thinking of making up some pizza dough and bring that along so people can just make their own Pizzas.

We've also got;

Hot dogs
Burgers
Steak
Burritos
Tacos
Fried Chicken
Jambalaya
Macaroni and cheese

Afters we have;

Apple Pie
Brownies
Doughnuts
Chocolate chip cookies
Pancake
Pecan pie
Whoopie pies

American food is one of the foods that just doesn't really do it for me. Sure, it's OK in small quantities, but when I was over there in January it was just all stodge, stodge and more stodge, and I was dying to get home for some healthy meals.

Still, pancakes.. yum! :p Gordon Ramsay did a nice recipe on the F Word the other week involving pancakes with bananas and a toffee sauce. I'd like to have a go at that :)

Pizza sounds like a good idea Leo. You're bound to please everyone with that, because you can just tell the fussies to bring their own topping :)

Brownies sound like a good idea too. I don't normally make them because they take up small amounts of lots of different ingredients (nuts etc.), but a larger batch could be a lot more economical.

Might just make a box of whatever tickles my fancy and bring them along :)

Well that is what I was thinking the "fussies" can bring their own stuff I mean you can't go wrong with tomato stuff and cheese :)

I leaning towards giving Jambalaya a crack

But I really do love Tex-Mex and wish we had a Chili's oop North :(

Bear in mind American pancakes are different from ours, their pancakes are our drop-scones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop-scone#Regional_varieties) or Scotch pancakes.

Which I'm pleased about because I don't like our pancakes, but American ones rock :D

I much prefer our pancakes, because I find American ones a bit stodgey and dripping in fat, but the Gordon Ramsay ones looked gorgeous!

Oh you will have done, I just have it without the tomato base. The last time I had some with tomato on by accident I was almost throwing up afterwards :(

Out! ;D I'm sure you'll be ok with cheese, ham, salami, pepperoni, olives, anchovies :p As I said mate, bring your own stuff we just need some packs of base mix even, mich better than the pre-made stuff. We have a bread maker which mixes dough

I prefer our p cakes too... though I wouldn't say no if they were the only thing going ;)

Well eggs, flour and milk we can't go wrong (English wise) so I'm sure people can make both. Though I've never made American ones though

I can't remember if it was Cupertino or Mountain View but the one we went to there was awesome, the cocktails were great and the food was quality :) I think I had the lemon & lime shrimp and classic sirloin combo, yum yum

Yes, I'm too fussy :(You're fussy?

I don't eat veg unless near forced, I hate spicy stuff, like very few fruit, and tbh, if it's not a by product of an animal, I doubt i'll eat it.

As for food, i'm not sure what i'll be bringing, I think you lot have covered what I was gonna bring, i'll just see if I can get hold of some giant hot dogs.

Remember Kate American theme is only for the Saturday night festivities :D so wont be too much stodge ;)

We'll be taking a run up to the cottage before the meet when I've finished all my marking to see what's about.

Everyone's welcome to bring food, but we were thinking basic could be bought as a group, which we can sort nearer the time

As for american theme Leo, what you've said is pretty much what I had in mind. We don't want to spend ages cooking though so things easy to stick in the ovens and just check on rather than having to check every 30 seconds are always good :D but we've got to make fries ;) :D

Lynnie - Not worried about the America theme at all. Like I say, I'm not fussy at all and I'll eat just about anything. I was just saying that American food doesn't really "do it" for me, that's all :)

I agree with you in thinking it's probably best if we stuck to simple, bung in oven (or on BBQ hopefully) type stuff, but there's nothing wrong with a few people wanting to have a bash at some dishes :)

Davey_Pitch
05-06-2007, 23:02
There is at least on BBQ there (though maybe two, can't quite remember) so I'm sure burgers, sausages, hot dogs etc can be cooked on it. It'll clear some room in the ovens for those who want to make other things, and the BBQ food mentioned is all stuff I can eat, which suits me fine :D

lostkat
05-06-2007, 23:05
Exactly :) I think probably sticking to the likes of sausages, burgers etc. is the safest method by far, just to make sure everyone gets something they like. People who want to cook extra can do that :)

Inspired by this thread (ta Leo ;)) and the fact I rarely have eggs and spare milk in the fridge I had 'Crepes aux fromage et champignons de la BBx' avec crepes avec limon et sucre pour pudding (to finish up the batter) ;)

I would say I hate you for not sending me pictures of that, but I made Spinach and salmon crepes along with some chive creme fraiche and salmon crepes followed by banana and chocolate crepe as dessert.

Ooops, sorry. Back on topic

I just found a site with loads of old American recipes. One of them calls for the feet of four calves.

Grits? Are you mad. I don't think I've even found an American that like them. :)

I could ask my ex-boss for his authentic Eastern North Carolina pig recipe - only problem is it requires a whole pig and a day to cook it. ;D

Davey, you think there will be any Oreos left by August? ;)
