View Full Version : Would you eat a Rook?

Saw the F-Word last night where he went shooting Rook, which was then cooked and eaten. I asked Kate if we could have a Rook, and apart from not knowing where to get one she didn't seem overly taken with the idea, although I think most of that was because she "couldn't be arsed to peel it" (her words :D )

So would you eat Rook? I bloody well would, can't kill you can it? And do you think any type of Crow would do? There are lots of Jays and Carrion Crows round here but not seen many Rooks.

When I was watching that I couldn't help thinking like father like son lol.

I'd eat a rook soon as look at it. Bit scrawny, but most likely delicious.

I've had partridge and pigeon before - though not London pigeons don't worry! :p

Can be a bit bland IMO, and there isn't much meat on the them - however it can be tasty once you get past all the bones.

I'd try it but then I'll try most things.

Bones was the annoying thing when I tried Thumper stew but the meat was tender and taste enough :)

I'd give it a go. I have had pheasant in the past, but you had to mind the bits of shot that was still in it :D There was a program a while back where they made this uber xmas dinner which consisted of one big turkey filled with layers of other birds, which was then slow roasted. It looked really really good, I think it was a receipe from the middle ages

They were going on about horse meat the other week. Next time i'm over in France i'll see if the restaurant is doing it.

As a general rule if something had parents I'll eat it. I'm not quite as fussy as only eating something if it could turn itself and walk with its back to the sun but either way rook is included in those rules.

I've eaten pigeons before and it was lovely, rook can't be far off.

Yeah I saw that, I think it was Hugh Fearnley-Dunkingstool's Offal Cottage or whatever his program is. Looked bloody good.

Thats the one! He was in an old cottage/barn thingy. Oh, and he smoked his own bacon by building a smoker.

my brother has his cookbook
all the recipes are just as nuts as the suggestions on the programme
definitely a great cookery book to use if you want to impress guests with your originality!

I've told Leon that I'll cook it as long as he peels it... I'm not peeling no bird :p

I've also had pigeon whilst we were in Estonia, and bloody nice it was too. Tonnes of bones though, the pesky critters!!

No. :)

You're a kitten, you have to have a desire to eat birds :p

I'd try it, but I think I'd try anything that hadn't once been my pet :D

I would not, could not, in a box.
I could not, would not, with a fox.
I would not eat it with a mouse.
I would not eat it in a house.
I would not eat it here or there.
I would not eat it anywhere.

Depends how desperate for food I was, it certainly wouldn't be at the start of my list of things to eat.

Mmmm Rook Pie.

Hugh Fearnly-Dunkingstool ate woodlice fritters on one prog I saw him do. He said they taste like gritty prawns.

Gooducken?
Goose stuffed with a chicken stuffed with a duck?

It's fantastic. :D

Yes - would hapilly give Rook a go.
Just because I've never had it before.

Had Horse in France last week. Was lovely.
Still not overly keen on snails or frogs legs though. Will eat them though.

Frogs legs seemed a bit...well...nothingish to me - maybe it was just where I tried them *shrugs* would try them again because of that reason.
Haven't tried snails but would.

Despite being grumpy and tired and unhappy about being away from home, there are some very good restaurants here in Barca - lots of garlicy buttery goodness ;)
