View Full Version : wireless Router question. Not for the faint hearted!
Guys, does the Draytek Vigor 2800g support a VPN server. I see it can act as a concentrator, but I don't want to have to buy a 2910G to find out the cheaper 2800 can do what I want.
I still want to set up my own VPN server, whether that be a windows VPN box or on the router itself.:)
I thought Concentrator was just a product name Cisco used, not an actual VPN term :/
The 2800 will terminate end points yes, be they LAN to LAN or single clients. As does the 2910 series.

Coolio, there are a couple on flebay I am looking at. It seems the 2600 can also do this, but I can't find any references to Wep2, which I would like to have.
Im right in thinking either you or Mark have a 2800 don't you?
I have a 2910 myself, and we use a mixture of 2800's and 2910's at work (depending on the WAN service). In fact there are several of each in a room down the corridor :D
Dont buy the 2600, your DSL speed will likely suffer, and I don't believe the product is supported any more. Well, certainly not being actively developed anyway.

Several of each? Unused?;)
Do you accept beer tokens?
Heh, sorry dude, these are strictly off limits. Far from surplus unfortunately :)
Bummer! I've found a 2910VG for 166 quid (can't find the pound key on a dutch keyboard) Is that a good price for one?
Wheres cheapest usually?
Be aware that the 2800 includes an ADSL/2/2+ modem, whereas the 2910 does not. Also, the letters after the number (e.g. 2800VG) indicate additional features, so make sure you're comparing like with like.
With the 2600 your DSL speed will definitely suffer. These can sync at DSL Max speeds but can only handle throughput of around 2.5 Mbps. Also, the 2600 doesn't support WPA2.
PS - I have a spare 2600 as I upgraded for this very reason.
PPS - Retail for the 2910VG is £188+VAT.
Good job you told me, I missed the fact there is no modem involved :embarassed:
That would have been a cock up of monumental proportions!
Okies, so a 2800G, maybe a V if I can find one cheap enough!
If you have a phone line (which you must do on DSL), you wont use the V, dont worry about it too much.

I had a thought that maybe it would make my life easier calling my colleagues around the world if I was to use voip. Its one of the "nice to have" features I guess. I could easily do without it, but I think maybe the geek factor is alluring also.
You can do it in software of course, but if you do have a practical use then it is worth considering. The DrayTel service is quite good (I'm using it until we get a land line).
I'm on DrayTel as well even though I do have a phone line. Only had a failed call once in the 8 months I've had it (and I make calls most days to the US). Yes, I have the 2800VG. :)
hmmm, one on ebay now (without the V) for 43.55
I think I will put in a sniper bid for this!
Guy I work with got a 2800G of Ebay for about £90 only last week, which was a good deal.
Bid is in!
Will put another in if need be on Friday.

What do you think of your 2910 Daz? I have the 2910G myself and like it (although I had it pre-ordered hence I have the first firmware on it, not sure if I should bother updating as it works fine).
If it ain't broke...
I flashed my 2600G due to a minor issue and ended up having to reboot it every 24 hours due to it 'forgetting' the internet connection. Fortunately Draytek support were very helpful and a few weeks later I had some beta firmware that worked.

Good as gold, not much else to say about it really. Does everything I want and gives me no hassle at all.
Running the latest firmware as I update on arrival by reflex, but like Mark says, if you aren't having any problems and dont require any of the new features/buttons then its probably best to just leave it.
My 2800VG has an uptime of 1512 hours (63 days) and counting. That's with BitTorrent and various file streaming included. Of course the DSL connection hasn't been up that long but I've had 25-30 days on that when no-one has decided to disconnect it. :)
