Just watched this, Michael Moore's new film about the American healthcare system. Obviously its less poignant to us in the UK than F911 or maybe even Bowling for Columbine but its certainly an eye opener!

Well worth a watch, if things are half as bad in the US system as it makes out then I really feel for them over there. I'd also say if you are going out there for a holiday for God sake make sure you have medical insurance from a UK company!

The problem with Michael Moore is he's very bias, very clever and excellent at editing stuff. He very rarely states both sides of the coin, so you could never take anything at face value.

Of course, in saying that, not everything he says is a lie either.

Personally I prefer Morgan Spurlock (from Super-Size Me fame) in his series, 30 days, he's much more open about things than Mr. Moore.

There is a definite truth behind what Moore says, that if you can't pay for your healthcare in the US then you won't get it, he uses impact to make his point and edits accordingly but its difficult to refute that what he says about the US system is made up to fit his own agenda.

Moore is no saint and spins a story to make a watch able and provocative movie. If you write this effort off 'because it's Moore' then write off the propaganda you hear from the right too, which is harder to do because it comes out of the mouths of the US president ;)

Anyway, yes Michael Moore is a man with his own agenda (well, who isn't), and after all the F911 crap he's not very high on my 'must watch' list (I have a pet hate - and it's conspiracy theorists - sorry if that offends anyone here, but they do my nut in).[/quote]

I like his books, specially Stupid White Men.

Same here, I take his stuff with a pinch of salt but I'd say I do that with most things anyway, just find them enjoyable and interesting reads. :)

Deja Vu here, we've had this discussion before and at the time I'm pretty sure I pointed out that F911 isn't actually about conspiracy theory. :/ And at that point I seem to remember you hadn't seen it, have you seen it now?

No I haven't, and I'm not going to either. I don't know what F911 is about beyond the obvious. However, I didn't say F911 was about conspiracy theories, I said Michael Moore was. I did put 'F911' and 'crap' next to each other there and I accept I might be wrong in that department.

I don't understand how you can make accusation about a film you haven't seen, where does this 'Moore is a conspiracy theorist' stuff come from, show me some evidence maybe I will read it and accept that he's a charlatan.

OK, I'm going to hold my hands up and surrender on this. I'll just state that I don't like Michael Moore. That's based on rumour and supposition 99% of which may well be bull****, but I'm not inclined to go digging around to find out. Call me an ostrich if you like. :)

Your (and his) point about the US health service is, for the most part, correct.

I agree. :) I found both series of 30 Days that I've seen absolutely fascinating tbh.

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of his, and you can't deny the US health system is apalling. I am really looking forward to seeing it.

will give it a watch. :) I like his books, specially Stupid White Men.

I have SWM, but I have a freak copy. I might have the only copy of its kind in the world. You get 2/3rds through it and it's a full repeat of the first 1/3 again. So I never got to finish it :(.

I'm kinda with Mark on this. As much as there may be valid points in this and indeed F911, I just don't trust the guy enough to tolerate the 'facts' he puts on screen. That and I don't believe cinema should be used this way, but that's another debate.

I'm watching it now, I've heard from American friends how awful their insurance system is and asked one of them to say how well he thought this movie reflects their system and he said that he thinks it's pretty realistic.

What I don't like about Moore in this film is the way he continually played the "how much?" thing when he was talking to people outside of the US and showing surprise when he was told that the cost was zero. He keeps repeating things back to people and it's irritating!

I'm not a Moore fan in general, he uses very specific and tight editing to show his point but I think this is quite an eye opener to those who don't know what it's like over there. Conversely I expect it's an eye opener to those Americans who don't know what it's like in some other countries.
