I polished off The Darkness the day before yesterday.
I must say its a very good game, kind of like a cross between Max Payne, Dark Corners of the Earth and Vampire Masqerade.
Its well put together with some excellet plot twists, if you are think about getting it then don't read any indepth reviews which mention the plot, you don't want spoilers!
As an FPS it isn't one of the finest and as an adventure its a little light but as a horror adventure it will have you on the edge of your seat.
Graphics wise the human modeling is great, the faces are perfect, although there are slight glitches like NPCs getting trapped in cut scenes and the such like but its forgivable. The only thing I can possibly say bad is that multiplayer doesn't seem all that good. Not a huge issue for me as I prefer single player stuff but for some it might be a downer. I also wasn't too sure about the guns, they are a big part of the game but don't seem that well balanced, most seem to do the same damage, from pistol to assault rifle.
I've just started Overload so will report back later when I have some spare time.

Sounds ideal for the sort of game Mrs. Feek would like. She loves Vampire Masqerade and is really gutted that it won't run on the PC any more. It's a common fault with no fix apart from an OS blat and hope.
What's the second hand price like for it? Still fairly high I'd imagine.
Aye, only being a week old you wont find it very cheap at the moment.
Let me know how you get on with Overload MB, I have high hopes myself.

Masquerade.
that a new game they released? I only knew of 2, Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption (2000 ish) and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (2005 I think)

They are the only two I'm aware of. Bloodlines is very good, I really need to re-install it and go back to it again.

Yeah me too, I still need to complete Redemption, got to New York and then ran out of free time :(
Bloodlines is the one. There's a bug where when it's run, it starts up and then crashes to desktop. Fairly widely reported, various suggestions for a fix but none of them worked for me.
Sorry MB, we've drifted somewhat.

I finally got The Darkness through on rental (delayed by 3 days in post due to the strike) and I can't wait to play it!

Well just played the demo of Overlord and really enjoyed it, something nice and fresh, one for the rental queue without a doubt :)

Just completed The Darkness and for me, it's definitely one of the best games I have ever played, certainly the best in the last 24 months and probably my favourite since Max Payne 2.
It just checked all the boxes for me.
Graphics
Audio
Music
Voice Work (exceptionally good)
Characters
Story (Interesting and Original)
Environments
Weapons
Game Time
It also has that something else that just lifts it up a level. Like I said, for me personally it ticks all the boxes and I'd give it a 9-9.5 out of 10, a crazily high score for me. I'll write a review up on my blog in the next couple of days.
One thing I can't understand is the 7.8 and 8 out of 10 scores on IGN and Gamespot respectively, it baffles the brain how it's so low, especially considering some of the ****e they give really good marks to. If it was made by Id, Bungie, Epic or such it would have had a lot more publicity and definitely a higher mark.

Possibly to leave themselves room to score Bioshock higher, if it lives up to the hype.

That would make sense.
my one problem with consoles such as the 360 are that I cannot ever for the life of my get used to a controller for an FPS... 3rd person is fine, but I just cannot get used to moving and firing with sticks.. despite years of trying.
They're definitely getting a lot better. Whilst you can't ever really get the accuracy of a mouse and keyboard I do feel more competent now playing FPS's on a console. A bit of practice and some intelligent targeting from the game and I've become a lot more comfortable with it. FarCry was one that worked well.
Oh, and I played the Overlord demo this weekend. Seems like a nice little game with a lot of character. Definitely interested in some of the puzzle solving logistics.

On the Xbox360? That was known as being one of, if not the worst ever when it was released as well. I believe they released an update because, well, they had to.
Maybe I got it after the update then, or maybe my skills are better than I thought! I found it quite forgiving in that if you could get the crosshair near enough to the target you'd get the hit. Unrealistic, but countered the lack of accuracy just the right amount I felt. Plus for a lot of the game you could use feral skills, which was hand-to-hand anyway.

It must have been after the patch then. I know they recieved a lot of praise for the quality of the update, so that would explain it.
I think I'll dig my copy out. I have a massive 5/1000 achievement points :p.
Yeah, it's a real tricky one to get achievements for. There's about three really easy ones (set 50 branch traps, 100 headshots etc.) and the rest are rock hard. Took me absolutely ages to finish it so couldn't be arsed to go through on all difficulty levels, and 80% of them are for multiplayer anyway. :(
