View Full Version : What car?

I'm currently looking around Autotrader trying to get inspired for when I change my car. I've been semi sensible....well, if you can call lusting over a Megane 16v Sport sensible, and trying to figure out how much I'd get for a kidney so I can get an Asbo car (or Kazbo...geddit?!) (Focus ST)

BUT! I need reasons why I shouldn't be madly in love with a Volvo C70 2.4 T GT. They're so priiiddy!

And before you cite 3 kids, I REFUSE to have a people carrier, REFUSE! With every atom of my being! It'll be a cold day in hell before I drive a mummys car! I want a fun car!

If you stick along the volvo lines an s40 with a 2ltr oil burner would have some poke ;)

I want a new shape S40 when I change cars :)

What is your supposed budget?

I don't really know about budget yet which is why its all dreams :/

Very very very best case scenario, which is also very very very very unlikely, it'll be 10k tops. Mr Mortgage Man is considering how best to say 'in yer dreams luv' without being too rude about it I think. Realistically it'll be around 6k inc tradeing in my car I think.

6k - Lotus Elise? ;)

Will do some searching later one for you.

But, Volvo 850 T5 should be easily possible. Goes like a chuffing missile!

Simon/~Flibster

I'd LOVE one, but I despite fighting my mumsy image I do realistically need to be able to, at the very least, showhorn the three kids in, with perhaps a lunchbox or two for good measure.

Is the 850 an estate? Thats almost as much of a dirty word as people carrier! *beetles off to look*

The 850 estate won the Touring Cars 2 years in a row before they were told they weren't allowed to use an estate....

The Essex Police on the A12 used to fight over who got to drive the 850 T5 Estate as it RAWKED!!!

So is my truck (old). But it barrels through anything else on the road (just like a Volvo should) in a very mean and nasty way.

It's rather fun knowing in the back of your head that if it came down to it, you could quite literally push off the road the annoying little prat that just cut you off.

Or, if you're going to keep it for a while, crash-repaired clamshell damage only ones can be got for as little as 4.5k

Yes Flib, it was a C70 soft top I saw (admittedly at the top end of the budget). After thinking 'I cant have a softtop!' I thought why the hell cant I?!

My main 'wants' are -

Newer rather than older
Solid car (this is where the Mini falls down for me. If it was just for me I wouldn't hesitate but with three kiddlies...it just feels too dinky..? I might have a look anyway though)
Easy to fix (MtE can fix most things so something that has to be wired into NASA before you can change the tyre is no use)
FUN! (read FAST!)
and cheaper to run than what I have now...a 2.7TD Nissan Terrano II

I really would look at the C70 coupe's instead of the droptops.
The droptops suffer because they're heavier, chassis flexes and the rear seat space suffers

The C70 in gold is a sexalicous car. *for a grandad mobile ;)*
Plus the 2.3Turbo engine is reliable and produces ~225bhp from memory. The T5 is a gem.

I'd seriously try to look at the Alfa 166 though. It's a wafter rather than a nutter, but is such a beautiful place to be and a beautiful car. Plus the V6 engine has shiny chrome metal bits and sounds great :D

Just seen a Saab 93 Aero.....hubba hubba!

Lovely cars, but not wallet friendly to fix. Person at work has had 3 turbo's in a year.

I want a Fiat 500!! But they aren't out til January and are about 9k out of my price range (they are 9k ;D)

They look superb.

My sister has one on order. I'm waiting to see if they do a nutter version. 3l V6 from Alfa, tuned a bit, call it the Arbarth..

I thought of this last night with SAAB's. They are great on the road until something goes wrong, then you get hit with premium price repairs. Although they are cracking motors to keep one on a road would be rather costly so I would be motioning against them at the moment for K.

Depnds where you go, but yes Saabs can be expensive to repair. Some engines also have a "sludging" problem which can kill the engine and it's hard to get a replacement under warranty.

Nice cars overall though :)

OK, well I read a mens magazine while I was waiting in the clinic today and it did a huge review on the latest hot hatches, about 15 of them to start with. Clio, Mini, Audi, Seat, the Focus ST, Megane R26, Golf and loads more.

I badly want a Megane now. A yellow one. :D Shame they are dreadful inside :(

Flibster
12-07-2007, 22:13
The The Megane is a superb car. Built cheap, but they have spent the money where it matters. Very quick. Big fun. But as you can get them new for 16k, the second hand prices are staying reasonably low.

But still over 10k

R27 is better than the R26. And they look good in yellow - which is a feat that very few cars manage.

How old is newer rather than older? Give us a no older than... then I will see what I can come up with :)

As for the Megane...... I shall try and be tactful, have you driven one? (sorry I you have said somewhere that you already have :embarassed: ). I only drove one once, one of the most horrible cars I have ever driven. Mind youi if you get a list together of ones you like that can be half the fun. Going out test driving lots of cars....vrrooooooomm;D

Pebs
31-07-2007, 11:17
No I havent driven one Muban. And after going and having a look at one a couple of days ago I'm not sure I can compromise that much on how vile they are inside. They are supposed to be just about the best hothatch around (the R26) but common sense is kicking in, a quick look in the mirror tells me I'm not 19 any more and do I really need to be able to outrun the world and his neighbour in a plastic filled french car. No.

I can't get away from the fact that the BEST fun I've EVER had in a car, bar none has been driving Matts Mini (even more fun than the 5 turbo we had many moons ago). I lovelovelovelove it. And that's primarily what I want, a car I LOVE driving. So I'm going to take the girls and see if they can all comfortably fit in one and still be able to inflate their lungs properly and then hopefully the hunt will be on.

If I do get a Mini I'm not going to compromise on what I want, and my wants are totally and utterly girlie! I want an indie blue one with white bonnet stripes, white mirrors and a white roof but NOT white wheels. Must be Cooper S, would secretly love a JCW but they are rarer than hens teeth so doubt I'll find one. This is still subject to finances though..grrrr!

If they dont fit in it I don't know what to go for. No idea. Nothing older than a 52, must have minimum 4 seats, must be reasonably easy to get parts for, must be fun! Thats it.

If you can get an S, I wouldn't get a Works, it really breaks my heart to say it but they just aren't worth the money.

Let me explain a little.

I do not in any way regret my decision to buy Minnie, she's great fun, very quick and having 'tlc' I don't have to pay to get her serviced for three years and I have a pretty solid warranty. She'll always command a higher price than a standard S and being one of the last JCW's come come out of the factory with a supercharger, and as a low mileage example I've probably got a bit of a collectors item on my hands.

However if I were looking at second hand I would buy a an S and take it down to Roland at GTT in Dorset. The same premium you would pay for a JCW would get you 60 as opposed to 40 more bhp and more usable torque. To get the 40 a JCW has would cost a good deal less. It also gives you a chance to drive an S for a while and either settle for 170bhp (which is still a very fast little car) or a chance to save up a bit and get the work done later :) Its what I'd do if I hadn't bought new ;)

Slightly off-topic, but meh. I know next to nothing about cars, except that Minnie rocks and I can't blame you for wanting one. I keep seeing one down the road from here that has the same colour scheme as Minnie but it's an S and has a sunroof. Still caused a WTF moment the first time I saw it.

LOL! Stop being so practical Desmo!!!

There is a plan. Ish. MtE is getting a 'normal' car, we will both be insured on both cars.

My car now gets used for the school run, for shopping and thats it (and it'll be a car to get to work in). I've thought and thought about what I use it for and that really is it. The only time I use the second row of seats is if all 5 of us are doing a long journey and I can't bear the thought of hours of squabbling so they get seperated. 5 of us simply won't fit in a Mini so it'll never be an issue.

The only other time I use it is when someone needs a big car, like the booze cruise. Not really a realistic reason to keep a big car.

Currently I'm using MtE's escort as it's far cheaper to run than mine. I don't think I've yet put anything in the boot. That said, if it really is too tiny, I won't get one. I can't really remember how small they are inside.

Pebs - Hope your test drive went well. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of the Megane at all, after having driven a couple of hire cars for work. However, they're pretty popular, so I guess it's all down to taste :)

I had to make the choice between silly and practical when I got the S14a. OK, so I don't have 3 kids, but I do have a 35 mile round trip to work every day. I was going to go for something economical and fairly roomy so we could fit big stuff from Ikea/B&Q in it. Then I realised "what am I spending £4k on a car that I feel meh about?" and decided to just go for the car that I REALLY wanted (and had done for some time) above anything else. I don't regret my decision one bit, even though my fuel bill has sky rocketed since I bought her. I enjoy driving it, and it puts a huge grin on my face every time I get in it :) Get something you really like rather than buying something because it's practical.

Good choice I feel, I love my MINI but the Renault gives you more room for luggage and 3 usable rear seats

Yep, much as I love the (new) batmobile, you'd struggle to get kids in the back, especially ones with legs! I think you've made a pretty good choice Pebs. Power + practicality :D

I'm not coming to Chester you nugget!

It is a 3 door, but there is plenty of room in the back. The salesman was in tha back when I drove it and he had acres of room behind MtE. The boot is enormous! Well, not enormous but big enough for anything I'll ever need it for and then some.

And it's mine! My first ever very own car in my name :D I think that's as exciting as everything else!

We have dodge neons over here. Infact a guy I work with has one. It's just the 2lt version though.

Should've got a Mini TBH.

Should have got it on Saturday TBH. That'd have totally confused me (rather than slightly confusing me over where you'd got lost :))

Since I know next to nothing about cars I'd normally require pics, but since I'm sure it has a good quality loud pedal, that'll do me. Nice car. :)

The stats are very good, the 2l engine develops 225ps (about 220bhp) and it gets to 60 in under 6.5s which is slightly quicker than the Works MINI, Brembo brakes and the Trophy (Cup equivalent suspension) makes for a great package. Put it this way; I wouldn't want to race on on relatively straight roads, put some curves in and I be slightly more confident.

All in all its a Megane version of the Cliosport 172 I used to have and thats no bad thing. The only thing I could ever criticise was the slightly dodgy interior build quality and the dealer network, the cost of servicing was very expensive in my area but a lot cheaper in Wales where I got it done a couple of times. If it was me it was the car I would have chosen for a the needs Karen has. Of course it doesn't have the style of the MINI ;) but you can't have everything.

[Investigates the cost of upgrading his engine to 230bhp]

Ooooh Matt you've been doing your homework!
I drove an ST-3 on Saturday too and if I'm honest I preferred the Ford purely because it felt more solid. But the drive wasn't as smooth, there was the big WHOOOOSH when the turbo kicked in (I know some people like that but thats why I LOVE your car, smoooooth power). Plus the ST made a very sexeh noise! If they had been the same price, I'd have got an ST there and then on Saturday. But, the Renault was £4k cheaper, t has all the same gadets I've since found out but with less buttons to do it all with so it looks more sparce. No rattles or squeaks which I was told to expect too. Plus the extra seatbelt in the back which the ST didn't have (on the 3 version anyway).

I was very disappointed Saturday afternoon when I realised I just couldnt afford an ST3, but having slept on it, I'm actually pleased with how it's panned out. ST's are a bit chavvy ain't they ( ;) ) and they're everywhere you look around here. The Megane will be extra fun purely because it'll have the WTF! effect. Servicing is cheaper, better mpg (ahem! My test drive in the ST averaged 14mpg :embarassed: ). I've got a fairly rare car which is very nice to drive 'normally', you don't feel like you have to rag it to get a good drive from it, good specs, loads of fun, a tiny bit of practicality in there to keep the mum in me happy, nice colour, cool wheels, lots of buttons on the steering wheel, what more could a girl want?! :D

Race ya!!

Heh, but those SRT-4's are a whole different breed. It's like comparing the original Mini to a modern Cooper S. They are totally different cars. My wife drives an original Neon (everyone feel sorry for her). I've driven one of those SRT-4's. The only thing they have in common is the heater controls and the name. EVERYTHING else is so far upgraded it's unreal.

I never thought I'd say this, but it's actually a FWD car I would consider owning.

I have a big fat cheque and a tax disc in my bag ready for 3pm tomorrow. Decided to p/ex mine for this one so the PonyMobile is going tomorrow too, I'm surprisingly upset. It's been an excellent car, reliable, solid, passed every MOT with no fuss, towed like a dream and for a while it made my horsey ambitions come true. I'll be very very sad to see it go :(

Onwards and upwards.

All I've done is driven it home but Sophie ahs already told me not to go round corners so fast and every time there was clear road Daisy said 'Come on mummy, ZOOOOM!' I drove home like a granny too.

I need to go and stroke it...it ALMOST feels better than Pigmos kitchen surface.
