View Full Version : MS Word/Vista problem
Bit of a random annoyance but thought I'd see if there was a way of fixing it.
Since getting my new PC with Vista, I've found that often when I open Word it stutters for a few seconds, goes to 'Not Responding' then after a few more seconds finally opens the document.
Doesn't matter what size the document is, and there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern to it. It also seems to dislike me using the networked printer and also goes to 'Not Responding' when I try to print anything. It works eventually, just a tad annoying waiting for it.
I'm running Vista Home Premium and it's Word 2003.
Oh and I don't want any 'install XP' answers :p

BOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :p
That's me buggered then i may as well leave the thread :(
What service pack Jen? Of Office I mean.
Good question :D Erm.......I don't think it's got any service pack as it's a dodgy copy. Any way of checking?
In Word 2003 just do help/about.
I did and it didn't display anything other than MS Word 2003 and a very long version number which I'd be impressed if anyone could instantly figure out what it was :p
Didn't have SP1 anywhere like I know things usually do. I'm 99% certain it's not been updated anyhow, usually I'd remember.
Think 2003 only works reliably in SP2 - some Vista optimisations iirc:

Not sure if it'll give you gip, but no harm in trying,
I'll give it a shot, ta :)
Got round to installing it. Seems to have improved in speed for opening documents, but still messes me around when I want to use the printer.
I'll have a look around for some patches now I know it won't nuke my Office install.

Or you can let automatic updates in Vista look after it, either or :)
Thanks :) Never really bothered updating Office as I never had a problem till now :D
Seems it does the same thing in Adobe Reader too :(
Bloody annoying.
Adobe Reader 6 was slow as hell to start for me. 7 was OK, but 8 is even better if you can live with the new interface.
As for printing problems, dunno what they are. I use Vista + Office 2003 myself so if there's anything I can help with. :)
I'm running 7 so I'll see if 8's any better.

I have a few things pause, wireless networks menu is the worst for it. If you click on something midload it gets that semi-opaque white screen over the program. It's annoying.
Never had any problems with Office 2007 though.
That's the kind of thing I'm getting :( Ah well, guess I'll either live with it or retreat back to XP.
Usually I don't print a huge amount, just have to at the moment with some job applications.
Don't get much of that myself, but then I'm running on an E6600 with 2GB RAM, so it doesn't tend to hang around much.
Ooohs at the e-penis :p
Mine doesn't hang about much with anything else, just printing which is why I figure there's a problem, not just a matter of lack of speed.
Would be if it were mine, but it isn't (it's work's). :(
Printing is a tough one because it can be anything from drivers to how the printer is connected to the software, and as it's drivers this is one place where a Windows XP to Vista upgrade can contribute to problems.
What's guaranteed is that the more printers you have configured the slower it gets, so have you removed any unused printers etc., particularly if you had the machine at uni? Removing excess devices from device manager may help too, though I'm not sure if the environment variable 'trick' you had to do to be able to do that on Windows XP still works on Vista.
It's only ever had one printer networked to it. It's a fairly clean system really device wise, just got the bare minimum. I didn't upgrade it, brand new system so couldn't have got messed up through the upgrade process.
I'll see if different drivers help.
Networked? If it's a network printer that can contribute as you get latency while it figures out if the printer is online.
It's a huge amount of latency then compared to when I was running XP on the exact same network!
I don't mind a small bit of lag, but I'm talking 5-10mins of lag/freezed up Word or Adobe Reader to print a 2 page document with no images.
That's not good. :/
Tried turning off Vista's firewall (temporarily)?
It's not turned on.
Browsing other PCs on the network is reasonably speedy, it's just the printer that isn't.
Sounds like broken drivers then. Might be worth deleting and re-installing the printer.
