It's not new and it's not fantastic but I've got a decent switch at last. Managed, big, reasonably intelligent and with lots of flashy lights, it's a lot better than the nasty cheap heap of junk I bought from Scan about 8 years ago.

I wish you had mentioned it to me. I currently need to dispose of two 16 port rack mountable switches, a 5 port and a few others. I also have the worlds supply of half inched network cable too.

Heh, I got it from work and 8 ports (my wireless router has another 4 if I get desperate) is plenty for me so I didn't need anything bigger or better.

Just curious as to what benefit being managed brings (in the general sense, not this specific case).

jinks I could be interested in one if they're going. Currently collecting bits for my new network. I have a cab, RJ45 patch panel, RJ11 patch panel, and UPS. I lack a rack mount switch and I'm going to hopefully get a good deal on a 1U server from Dell to top it off.

So he can do things with it if he wants to. QoS, VLANs, Filtering, routing etc... or any other advanced features managed switches offer. :)

Thought it'd be something like that. Managed switches are one of the few bits of networking kit I've not encountered before (though obviously I've heard of them before).

A few magners /twig infused beers at cottaging would serve as adequate payment methinks.:) Do you need any network cables also?

I have no idea what you're all talking about but I want one too.

I removed it at 01:30 this morning. It was fine while the PC and the aircon in the shack were running but when I shut them down the fans are making a very annoying whine. I can cope with normal fan noise while I sleep, in fact many years ago I slept with an IBM PS/2 model 60 tower system less than a foot from my head but I couldn't cope with the whine it was making last night from a different room :(

I'm back on the old switch now.

Sorry for the OT Feek.

As you probably know that's sadly the price you often pay with small fans. Might be replaceable if you fancy popping the lid.

Hmm, water cooled switches anyone? ;D

I will bring a selection of switches to cottaging and you can all pick what you like.

If I knew enough about switches I'd probably want one, but as it is I'll just stay happy with my wireless router for now :)

bearing in mind that these switches of often designed to be able to cope with being put in hot comms cabs you could probably get away with either swapping the fans out with fewer quieter ones (YSTech do quiet 40mm fans) or even 7-volting the fans if there is a 5v and a 12v available (other combinations will work, but I will let someone else do the maths)
