One day.

One smegging day after a repair.

http://www.ukrm.org/feek/arse.jpg

I've just started getting into Backgammon, I've preordered Bioshock and today I put in the code for the month's extension to Live that came back with the box after the previous 'repair'.

I'm not happy :(

I should think you're not. Worst of all it's Friday and I doubt you'll be able to give Microsoft hell until Monday.

Have you turned it off & on again :D

*Trying to divert your attention with shockingly poor humour* :)

Sorry for your Loss dude.

MS are open tomorrow, I'll be on the phone when I get up, the odd thing is that it didn't feel particularly warm.

I was pondering the idea of going and buying one from Argos and taking it back a couple of days later for a refund with some excuse, but it's exempt from the 30 day no quibble returns policy :(

Malc, yes, three times :p ;)

Damn thats ******* unlucky :( These things break far too easily. Did it see a PS3 and panic?

Try Tesco or Asda then, they're no really likely to check things like serial numbers etc so you should have no trouble getting your money back there.

Sucks though :( As it's 4 lights and not 3 I don't think it's covered by the 3 year waranty either.

Tesco do a similar thing? Is that definite? If so, I'll be there tomorrow.

And it's three lights, top right isn't glowing.

Davey_Pitch

Ah, looked like all 4 in that picture.

And I'm sure Tesco couldn't really refuse a refund if you bought a faulty product. You could always go down to the store and check for a disclaimer of some kind before buying one.

I'm more concerned that they'd try and force a replacement on me. It's a bit dodgy to take back a games console after a few days and ask for a refund because I'd have had to buy at least one game and not to want a replacement console means wasting the game.

Although, that's nothing to do with them anyway, it's none of their business. All I'd be doing is "I bought this three days ago, it's started flashing three lights at me, take the damn thing back and give me a refund" *poke*

The staff in Tesco aren't likely to give a monkeys dude, just another transaction to them. And besides, you're right, having been 'sold' a faulty product they cant refuse you a refund.

Gutted for you though :(

Besides Tesco's made a 9% GM last year at least 4% ahead of others, they can afford it ;)

Towel trick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avWs4-wD15w)!

I've heard of that before, it's basically forcing the thing so hot that solder joints melt (urgh) and hopefully when they cool, they're good again.

btw, he caught the hammer of the gun when he first picked it up and forced it forwards, that pushes the release valve and it vented all the gas. Common thing with gas blowback airsoft pistols :) Once it's happened, it can damage the seal because all the gas escaping at once cools it very quickly and just needs a new one, certainly not a hunnerd and fifty bucks!

When i posted that i could fix them it was due to the Solder problem.
So,
Basically you just strip them down to board, cover the sensitive bits up with Crumpled tin foil then get a Hot air gun & blow over the board for a few mo's, you have to get it hot enough to Re-Flow the Solder  Which is not as hot as it sounds. Then you rebuild it & switch it on, leave it for ten minutes then switch it off & leave it for 20 minutes. Then you PLAY GAMES
The Towel trick & the Squeezing the case trick are just lucky minor stop gap tricks that work with those machines where the solder is minutely fractured ;)

Feek
18-08-2007, 12:40
Malc, is it right that they used solder with a very low melting point? That would explain a lot, especially if it can be heated enough like that to get it to reflow.

And Daz - *blush* :)

Justsomebloke
18-08-2007, 12:52
Yes & crap quality solder. You have nothing to lose if you don't void your warranty by taking it to bits.
So,
Wrap it in a towel switch it On & let it cook up for say 10 minutes first time round & then try it. If that don't work try 20 minutes. After each cook though unwrap the towel & stick it somewhere DRY but cold. Worse ways you cook teh bejesus out of it & kill it stone dead. At least that way you will get a decent swap back when you RMA it ;D

Is this a common thing with 360 consoles? I'm looking at getting one as soon as I can afford it.

Feek
18-08-2007, 14:37
Yes, very. Microsoft recently increased the warranty from one to three years specifically for this problem.

Have they released new(er) consoles that fix this?

All consoles made by MS since the problem was acknowledged should be fine. They know there is a design flaw and any console going back to them should come back completely fine (I hope!).

Ah, fair enough. I shall come back armed with more questions closer to the time I start shopping.

Nah, this one is definitely knackered. Played a couple of games of Backgammon, fine - Loaded Forza and it hung during load then gave me the lights.

I'll head over to the local Tesco in a bit.

I'm not so sure Davey. There's nothing I've read so far that shows there are any major manufacturing changes at the moment. You mght get lucky and have one of the new heatsinks fitted but they are not guaranteed to be fitted with repairs.

Daz
18-08-2007, 17:58
The new new (HDMI premiums) models are Zepher boards, which is what they're putting in the Elite, and they do have the new heatsinks etc - trouble is they aren't out over here yet and no word when that'll happen. The proper revision (Falcon) - with 65nm chips - are still officially a rumour, let alone close to manufacture.

Mine's a release day unit - only crashed twice as far as I can remember. First time was the day I got it (typical, I thought!) on the opening intro to Perfect Dark, the second was in Oblivion as I jumped towards an Oblivion gate, whilst swiping my sword at an imp as he threw a fireball - there was a lot going on onscreen! Not had any other problems.

Guess who's Xbox has just gone three red flashing lights?

Even though I got it in August 2007 it has a manufacture date of 20th Feb 2006 on it! I'm hoping this won't be a problem when I call them.

Manufacture date should be irrelevant to any warranty really, so long as you have proof of when you did in fact purchase it.

Feek
17-02-2010, 21:19
That's the issue, I don't have a receipt or anything at all. I don't remember whether I registered the console or not but the web site has no record of the serial number when I try.

I'll know tomorrow.

Zirax

You probably already know this but if MS don't help then depending on the RROD it might be repairable.

edit:- Got one in bits infront of me now, it's not surprising so many brick it with such a shoddy design around the gfx cooling. Currently wondering about modding mine.

It was bought by cash so I've got no records of that - The only record of the date I got it is contained within this thread and pointing MS to a thread where I openly say that I'm defrauding Tesco probably isn't the best thing to do!

I've spoken to MS and without evidence of purchase or registration I'm pretty knackered. The manufacture date isn't helping me either. Technically I know that's irrelevant but I just have no proof whatsoever of the date of purchase. I tried the sale of goods thing but they seem to have all the answers to that one where they extended the original warranty because of the known problem.

There's a chance I just got a jobsworth person on the phone so I'll give it a day or so and try again and see if I'm any luckier. It's worth a go :)

Desmo, I'm really sorry to have messed you about on that but I'm afraid you're right - The chances are that I'll end up doing what you did and buying a new console and because of the deals about I may as well get one with a bigger drive and probably HDMI output as well.

Feek, I could do with a spare xbox to mess around on. I'm looking to watercool mine as a project so one that I can try stuff on without panicking about breaking it would be ideal. I was just about to bid on ebay on a broken one, so if you get no joy from MS, let me know.
