I haven't upgraded my PC in a long time, A very very long time in fact so it I essentially need to start from scratch, so my plan was to install the following components inside my existing Cooler Master 210 (assuming an ATX 2.2 PSU fits in an "ATX" case).

All of that is from scan.co.uk (http://scan.co.uk/) as they are cheapest once you take into account delivery costs plus they appear to be the only e-tailer to show a difference between the 95W G0 Q6600 and a normal B3 or older Q6600 other than Oc. Amazon do a better price for Vista - I am also concerned about the "UPGRADE to 64Bit" comment, does that mean I have to install Vista 32 then upgrade to 64 - which would be odd as they are different kernels etc. The Amazon products has separate products for 32 and 64 bit.

Anyone got any thoughts, having not ordered parts for a new computer for 3 or 4 years I am actually quite nervous.

Looks like a solid build Rich :)

I'd guess that is what the Vista thingummy means. Worth the 64bit version with the chip though...

You gonna get a TV card? 'Cause that monitor will pwn your TV :p

Don't buy retail Vista, buy OEM, much cheaper. I don't know the mobo or the PSU but the rest looks good.

Much as though I would love to buy the OEM version, it is against the system builder licence to do so, you still spend £100+ on Vista OEM and the software is no more 'legal' than if you downloaded it via BitTorrent and cracked it or used a keygen :(

I do already have a TV card from a build I did for someone else that went wrong, how useful it is is debatable as we can't get Freeview or Channel 5 - I guess that will change by 2012 though.... Maybe!

I believe it's slightly different in the UK.

PLEASE NOTE : The OEM agreement for Microsoft OEM SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION.

If the individual software license is a desktop operating system (including Windows XP Media Center Edition), we grant you a nonexclusive right to distribute individual software licenses; provided that each one is distributed with either (a) a fully assembled computer system or (b) a nonperipheral computer hardware component.

A “fully assembled computer system” means a computer system consisting of at least a central processing unit, a motherboard, a hard drive, a power supply, and a case.
A “nonperipheral computer hardware component” means a component that will be an integral part of the fully assembled computer system on which the individual software license will be installed.

I just bought an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate this week and was forced to buy hardware with it, they wouldn't sell it by itself. I've heard this before with MS Operating Systems from many UK suppliers.

Please don't throw £100 down the toilet, do what you're allowed to do.

Ah ha, now that is very interesting - I wonder why the difference between the UK and the US OEM EULAs.

Any idea on where this leaves you on the "licence lives and dies with the motherboard" issue?

Because in the UK we already get fleeced more for hardware and operating systems so get some slack....?

Just don't change the mobo... Job done :D

It still lives, and it still dies, unless they changed that part (why on earth would anyone buy Retail if they did).

This is true, I think I am convinced that Vista Ultimate OEM would be better @ £115.02

Phew.

I am reasonable, and when the cards are on the table there isn't really any choice. Worst case scenario I buy another copy of Vista OEM in a few years and still be almost quids in.
