View Full Version : Bioshock *not demo*

Right, we're not playing the demo anymore, new thread time! I see Davey was in the game earlier so I'm not the only one who got an early delivery.

Having lots of fun, I've completed the first main level thingie with the Doctor geezer but am a little frustrated that I've only got space for a couple of Plasmids, even though it said it's possible to expand that I've not been able to yet.

This is the first proper non racing type game I've played on a console so still getting the hang of the movement system but it's good, I'm enjoying it :)

Davey_Pitch
23-08-2007, 23:55
Part way through the second level you'll come to a machine that'll let you increase your Plasmid slots an extra two times, though it costs 100 ADAM each time to do so (though if you've been dealing with the Big Daddies you should have enough by then). When you get around to that machine, you should end up with about 7 of the full 10 available to you already (if you can afford to buy them all), which I find nice that you don't have to wait until really late in the game to get them all. :)

Btw, the game kicks major arse :D

I'm finding it pretty tough going on medium difficulty. Eve, ammo and first aid all get used up pretty quickly!

I find the best tactic with single enemies is simple shocking them to keep them still, then move in for a headshot with the shotgun. A single blast usually takes them down, and lets you save your pistol and SMG ammo for multiple-attacker fights :)

Only saw two Big Daddies on the first level so hopefully there will be more before I get that far on the next level. I'm very low on ammo though but I'm sure there will be enough of that around or buyable.

Actually really enjoying it even on the 'easy' setting. Mrs. Feek sat watching as I was playing all evening and she liked it as well. She said that she prefers watching that sort of game to playing it.

Two questions:

1. How complicated is this game? Can't be doing with games which take forever to work out unless it's really really worth it.

2. What sort of performance are you guys getting and with what settings and system specs?

EDIT: Of course you're on Xbox so Q2 is irrelevant, anyone got the PC version yet?

Nice one :D
It's great :) Makes a refreshing change for me too, as usually I'm not hugely keen on many FPS games at least not to the extent of some people. Plus it makes me cast aside my achievement whoredom because I love taking my time in the game and getting everything possible out of it, the audio diaries I'm particularly keen on as they build up the story nicely.
After this, I'm definitely picking up a copy of Condemned although I did find Condemned creepier (At least so far!).

Me too, although there's one I currently can't get.

I'm at the entrance to the Farmer's Market but it's all locked up. There's a recording just inside the entrance but I can't get in, nor does Telekinesis work on it. Has anyone got that far and figured out how to get in? It's either a secret bit, or something I need to come back to shortly.

Also, I killed a Big Daddy on this level but the Little Sister escaped down a pipe. Now it's showing that there are two Little Sisters left on the level - one with a Big Daddy and one without. I tried banging on the entrance pipe with my wrench but it seems she's gone for good. Anyone know how to get her back?

And finally, does anyone know how to display how many autohack tools you currently possess without trying to hack a machine? I keep getting the opportunity to make them with the invention machines, making them and then finding I can't pick them up as I already have five.

Yeah SecuRom is one of the worst crap to have installed on your system. What with it randomly requiring ide cd drives to be disabled (ok so older versions of securom) its generally an annoying little program.

More useless junk installed :/ When will they understand that no matter what you do with your team of 50 "mega programmers" there are thousands out there as smart/ if not smarter to rip out the offending feature and copy to all. Money permitting I may start gaming on a 360. Essentially pirated version > brought version.

I have a collectors edition infront of me and i'm doing a system backup now so that when i'm done I can just nuke and restart :)

Don't all the little sisters escape down pipes? Or am I thinking of the wrong pipes? :D

Just carry on playing the story and aim towards your goal, it will open up as you progress

That's never happened to me, but what I've found is that there are more Big Daddy's than Little Sisters. If you just carry on you should find her with another Big Daddy (I killed 5 Big Daddy's one level and there were only 3 Little Sisters).

And finally, does anyone know how to display how many autohack tools you currently possess without trying to hack a machine? I keep getting the opportunity to make them with the invention machines, making them and then finding I can't pick them up as I already have five.

I don't know if it makes a difference but I died just before I killed him - there was definitely a Little Sister with him at the start but she was gone when I made my way back to him. If I see them lumbering along on their own I tend to leave them to it - they can be handy with the hypnotise splice. :)

Ah I see. Next time you see one just follow him for a while, he'll eventually call a Little Sister out and you can try again from there :)

I'm at a point now where I'm facing "Elite" versions of the Big Daddy. Suffice it to say that they're kicking my ass, and costing me a fair number of first aid kits and EVE hypos each time. They're great fun to fight though :D

I have been busy this weekend but the activation fiasco is now putting me off. Granted it will be a good game, but to be limited on the number of installs and then having to use a 'removal tool' before reinstalling is offputting. The tool hasn't been released yet and otherwise you'll have to call a premium rate number.

I really think I may return my game and wait until I have a 360.

Finished it, but can't believe I didn't get the Historian achievement - I was certain I'd checked every single area. I can only assume that one of them is in the one place I couldn't get to:

If you kill Sander Cohen to get the Irony achievement and muse box thing, he doesn't appear later on to open his apartment door. That must be where the final recording is, unless I missed some entirely.

Davey_Pitch

You'll have missed some, I know I did, and I spent a long time exploring every area. There's 122 in total, so you could always load up your last save game and see how many you missed out by. Davey_Pitch

Yup, there's enough upgrade machines for every weapon. I missed one somewhere which was annoying. I will say though, by the end of the game I loved the Crossbow. It's the only weapon powerful enough to take out the Spider slicers in one hit (headshot), at least when it's upgraded. It was my most used weapon by the end, except for the Chemical Thrower which was fantastic for taking out Big Daddies (without taking a single hit) :)

Nice :) I simply upgraded my Chemical Thrower to make the ammo last longer, then ran in and used an entire clip of the electric gel. It would kill them and keep them shocked, meaning they wouldn't even get a shot off at me :)

I've just finished it too! Very fun game, with some really memorable moments.

My favourite way to dispatch the big daddies was using the trap bolts for the crossbow and the ammo for armoured stuff. The best one was near that XXX place in Cohen's area, I laid out an elaborate line of bolt traps and a couple of proximity mines. I shot the big daddy to make him chase me (I had hardly any health myself) then tried to run away through the maze I'd just made having to crawl. The last line killed it and it smashed into the wall at the end just as I moved out of the way! Having the vita chambers means dying isn't a huge deal, but that was still pretty awesome.

But I've just got to the part in the farmer's market with all the bees, smoke and splicers all over the place. Excellent :D Made me jump a few times though :embarassed:

You're a bit further than me.

I've just been past the area where the submarine blows up. I'm thoroughly enjoying the 'Hypnotise Big Daddy' plasmid...saved me a lot of trouble so far, Rosie vs 3 splicers, not a problem.

I'm just struggling to do long sittings on this game, or any game for that matter, maybe my gaming levels are reducing to 'Way above average' from 'Loser: Get a life'

Haly

I keep forgetting to use that plasmid :embarassed:
Came across a big load of Rosies earlier which was a bit of a handful!

I'm loving the achievements too, enough to give you a sense of accomplishment while not just throwing them at you. The more I play it, the better the game is.

Davey_Pitch

Haly
06-09-2007, 15:11
Actually I didn't mean at once, I just meant seemingly round every corner for a bit :embarassed:
Saw about 3-4 Rosies in very quick succession during collecting items for cleansing the forest. There were flying grenades going everywhere :D I ran from one to get extra space to fire at it and ran into a Houdini splicer and another Rosie, then just as they died, walked round another corner to another one.

I have to say, I haven't often felt so much fear in a game as when I was being attacked by splicers, and whilst trying to fight them off accidentally dealt a Big Daddy a glancing blow with a stray bullet or plasmid. They move fast when they want to! Only way I found to escape is to get into a bolthole where they can't reach you.

Felt a little disappointed at the end, the following the little sister bit just felt a bit average compared to the rest of the game. Very standard kind of thing.
I've managed to not get the 'Dealt with every Little Sister' achievement which is weird because I don't remember ever leaving an area until I'd dealt with all the little sisters. Any ideas what I did wrong there? Or have I just been an idiot and left somewhere for some reason?

Nice one dude. I'll be going through it on Hard soon enough, but I'll be aiming to get all the diaries and weapon stations on the same playthrough, as great as it is I'm not sure I could go through it 3 times.

There were loads of things I had to do after playing it through once. Hadn't got all the weapon upgrades, didn't get all the tonics, hadn't got all the research bonuses, not invented 100 items etc. Was much simpler to do all those without enemies being a nuisance, so played it through on easy. Got through it in three sittings.

A downside of this though was that the first time I played it I saved all the little sisters to get the achievements, and this time I had to save them all anyway otherwise you don't get the bonus tonics they leave, so still haven't seen the alternative ending. Next time I can just play through getting just the tonics I want, skipping all the non-storyline diaries, and harvesting to my heart's content!

It's weird going through and killing Big Daddies with three frags, or a couple of crossbow traps. Doesn't feel right somehow, they should be double hard!

Davey_Pitch
19-09-2007, 10:11
I was quite lucky on my first playthrough in that I wasn't achievement hunting, yet still managed to get all but three of the achievements (and I couldn't get one as I was playing on normal). Playing on easy does sound a little too easy perhaps, the Big Daddies should be a challenge, they shouldn't go down easy. Hard should certainly be a nice challenge :D

Playing through on hard now, and just done the bit where you have to collect the enzyme samples in the farmer's market. Had my ass handed to me a number of times because you can't collect and defend yourself at the same time... especially as there's a countdown for when the bees come back!

Big Daddies with the rail-type guns are lethal on hard. *BANG* first aid! *BANG* first aid!...

24-09-2007, 13:20
Ahhhh 2 big daddies in succession.. then a little sister with two big daddies :) I led the third into a room where I set up two rocket terminals but instead I led them straight into the path of a spare one. Within 20 minutes I eliminated 3 little sisters and four big daddies lol :D I can get on with the level now.

I defeated these with armer piericing bullets in the pistol.. Don't discard thr pistol! then throwing Rage at one of them and at the other splicers.. got myself killed and waited inside the respawn pod thingy, which was right next to the fight. They couldn't get me in there so I watch the carnage from a safe damge.. then repeat - lol !!

50 what?

I started and completed the Hephaestus level last night. Is it me or are the Splicers getting tougher?... and Ammo seems to be getting tighter too. I struggled with this level actually .. It might have been then I was just tired but it took me a while to get going.. I made a meal of the first big daddy and lost all my ammo and plamsa.. so I started again only this time building up some frags and armour piercing bullets.. Surely enough, they were a little easier to defeat.

I have found it easier to ignore the first big daddy you see. As long as you don't attack them, they'll ignore you. In this level I manged to locate (roughly) all three. Once I've hacked a few turets. I lure one towards the other passing the turrets as they chase you. They get distracted by these and gives you a chance to reload while they take some damage (all beit minor)... then throw a rage at them. It's not easy but it's affective.

Ha Ha another nice touch I found last night in this level.. the booby traps in the office.. Use the Telekinesis to grab a corpse.. then hold it in front of you and walk through.. The corpse gets fried :) .. That's what I'm loving about this game.. more than one way

Out of interest, what are the splicers that look like milkmen?

The pipemania hacking is really really dull. I will play some more just out of curiousity. The hacking could be improved dramatically if it was done under pressure. For instance in Deus ex you had very little time to get it done before being mown down or something come along. In bioshock it takes you to a seperate window where you have all the time in the world.

I have to say that its a lot better than some of the other tripe being churned out. NFS, i'm looking at you

Yeah hacking is a real bore, as is getting all the research photos (especially doing it three times like I did!). It's really good when you get full bot and turret research and hacking automatically works though. With a few tweaks they could have made it a superb game instead of just a really good one I reckon. There really is no impetus to stay alive with so many Vita-chambers about; if you set the alarm off you're better off standing still and getting killed by the bots so the alarm resets, rather than wasting your ammo or plasmids on them.

One of my main gripes (apart from being able to hack in mid-air) is that when you hack the U-Invent machines you suddenly need less stuff to invent things. So... does hacking make them more efficient in terms of materials, and if so why aren't they that efficient already? Surely an item either needs a certain number of parts or it doesn't. Whatever. And why is it that I can collect 30 rubber hoses, distilled waters and alcohols, but only ever have a handful of batteries, brass tubes or steel screws? Inventions are bottlenecked by lack of a single item that's required for each one. These are things that could easily be ironed out.

Much the same as how I feel about it. The experience first time round was brilliant imo, but I don't have a huge urge to go back to it and when I do, it'll just be for the last few achievements.

I've got Shadowrun on the 360 and Daz has it on Vista. It's good fun, I haven't played it in a while but it really drew me in for a while. It had some dodgy reviews but a mate bought it so I wanted to join in and it was a good multiplayer experience, I liked the variation that the different races brought to it as well as the various magical skills.

\o/ Neptunes bounty is one of the hardest levels I think so far.. I think it's becuase you are still getting used to the gameplay.. like how to use the resources you have effectively.. I found the first big daddy in that level a tough cookie.. but I found it's flaws after that and it gets easier.
