I'm aiming to pick one up at the weekend. Is there anything I need to be careful/cautious about? I'll give it plenty of space and won't let it move when it's on.

For net access, I assume a normal ethernet cable is needed, rather than some bespoke MS cable?

Correct, and one comes (or used to anyway) bundled with the Premium. Not a lot else to say really, the power brick is a console in itself and needs room to breathe, and you'll be wanting a play and charge (http://dvd.co.uk/GHw/Xbox-360-Play-Charge-Kit-Xbox-360/MS35392/product.htm?sr=gsp) kit for sure. Other than that, just get yourself on Live off the bat and get stuck in :)

For the love of god don't move the console from horizontal to perpendicular or vice versa when it's on or you'll scratch the disc all to hell. I think that's the most prevalent n00b mistake that some make. Apart from that, as Daz says, play and charge is fairly handy.

Cool, I'll get one of those thingies. Thanks!

If you can afford it, go for the Elite instead of the Premium. 120GB HDD and HDMI output make it more worthwhile in the long run IMO.

The Elite is the one I've been looking at. Just trying to find the best deal at the moment.

Daz

Probably sound advice given the price difference :) Plus you'll know they have half decent cooling and you'll be set for when they open video marketplace if that interests you.

Plus you'll be like all cool and stuff.

I want to be cool and stuff, I could do with HDMI so I can use composite for the Wii.

I guess you mean component ;)

VGA no use to you Davey?

Aye, that'll be the one I meant :p

VGA's no good for me, I need the space free to hook up the laptop/PC, so I've got the 360 going in via component with the Wii going via scart. I guess there's not a huge difference between scart and component for the Wii, it's not the graphical powerhouse the 360 is.

Na, it doesnt make a great deal of difference, though it's obviously more polished, particularly on the channel select screen etc. Nothing worth pulling out all the stops for though imo

That's what I was thinking. It's something I'll sort out way down the line (probably when I eventually move to an Elite), I'm in no rush for it :)

Goose

Grabbed an Elite + BD + Flatout

I have tons of games arriving on Monday, huzzah for bargain buckets!

Took a while getting it on the net though, fecking ZoneAlarm.

fecking ZoneAlarm.
Agreed. I never bothered reinstalling after my last OS rebuild. Haven't regretted that decision. And to think I once thought it was the best thing since sliced bread*.

* Exaggeration, to prove the point.

Have fun with the new 360. :)

It no longer exists on my PC now.

Any good free replacements that let me open ports?

Mark
01-09-2007, 18:48
I just use XP's built-in firewall. If you're behind a router and you're careful about spyware there's really no need for anything else.

The only benefit of ZoneAlarm I see is stopping something that's got in getting back out, and prevention in the first place is the answer there.

I'll have to check my orders. Grabbed just about every deal I could, which meant it's all coming from different places. :D

Edit: If you mean right now, no.

leowyatt
