They haven't actually delivered my items yet (hopefully the good service will continue to that point)
However I emailed earlier to ask if they would be able to change my delivery to a Saturday as long as it can go out tonight.
I quickly get an email back to say that its been done.
I did only ask if though and as such didn't tell them to reroute it to home rather than work. However a 20 second wait on the phone and I was through to a human being who sorted things instantly and told me they would email me if there were any stock issues.
Very good service, very polite and very quick to answer the phone.
Having previously dealt with a few companies which don't have these things it was a pleasure to have good customer service at a price which undercuts the competition. :)
Fingers crossed I'll get a box of goodies tomorrow

Makes a change :) Always good to have quality customer service, so many companies scrimp on it.
I've had no problem with them either. Of their own initiative they offered me an RMA on some hardware I was having trouble with.
A good few years back I had a lot of problems with them trying to RMA a CPU which burned up and took a motherboard with it. I've heard they've improved a lot since then so this is good to hear.
I actually drive there a fair bit as when at uni its cheaper to drive than it is to have it posted! Inside is much the same as it always was but the people there have smiles on their faces and are always up for a bit of banter.
They also seem to all be wearing suits now. I really do think they are looking to become even bigger than they are now by taking their customer service to the next level, which is where pretty much all of their competition is lacking.

I've had a few bits and pieces from them recently and been very impressed with the level of service.

Consignment left them at 13.00 and is already on its way to the delivery terminus at Maidstone.
As long as they have corrected the delivery address this will be with me in record time :)

Where do you think your current Motherboard came from :p
The last time I bought something from Scan, it was a motherboard that turned up. It was slightly squashed, but as the box was fine I assume it happened before Scan got it.
It's good that they are getting bigger - but I hope their customer service doesn't as they get bigger which unfortunately happens so much in companies. Hopefully they'll keep their values and keep their decent managers/directors and stay on the case. I don't buy much stuff for my computer (a couple of things every 2-3 years) - but I've had good experience from them... :)
Hope it all works out MB! :)

I had issues with a CRT monitor that started failing about 6 months after I bought it. In the end I replaced it because I was getting cheesed off with Scan dragging their heels over everything and generally being crap; but again that was several years back and I've heard people saying that they've been taking serious steps towards improving customer service over the past few years.

Nice :)
Never used Scan - use eBuyer for all my/our stuff - but may give them a try...eBuyer can be a bit slow to answer questions, although they are very good when they do - I mislaid a stick of RAM that I'd bought - I bought a Shuttle + RAM, had to send the Shuttle back, and must've left the RAM in it.
So then on top of paying the £17 special del cost, I also got sent replacement RAM with no questions asked, before they'd even received the Shuttle. Happy me!

I was impressed with the speed they processed my order. Put it all through on Monday night (bank holiday), and the order was in the house on Wednesday morning. Can't ask for more than that really :)

Same as beansprout i use eBuyer for almost everything now days, but i've never really had a problem with anyone thats been mahoosive or not been solved reasonably quickly. Scan/Tekheads/Wherever i'm happy to shop again. Only big problem i ever had was a Reserator was shipped to me with one of the barbas broken (not actually eBuyers fault). They said send it back but i weighs about 2tonnes so i told them that was silly, they then asked which day would i like it picking up free of charge (:D) turned around in about a week i was shocked!
Oh, I forgot to say - Scan paid for and arranged pickup of my RMA. Just boxed it back up in the original box and packaging and a man from City Link turned up at the door to take it off me.
In truth, I've had a few slow RMAs due to manufacturers dragging their feet (most notably ASUS - whose support was virtually non-existant), and a few supply problems due to well-documented stock control issues at the time. Other than that, I've had no trouble with Dabs, eBuyer, Scan, OcUK, Komplett, Novatech, or the several others I've used over the years.
whoo gotta love scan :) quality family business :)
i even decided to drive there one day when i was desperate to get something over the weekend :D
used to order loads off them and never had any issues, although never had to RMA owt.

buy most of my stuff from scan. I've just ordered a load of stuff today for customers. One of the items is needed be tommorow. I rang them and asked them to change the priority to HIGH. I've just had a mail to state the order has been picked.
Their returns are excellent too. That said, I've never had any problems OCuk. They arranged the pickup of a faulty TFT. My only gripe with them is their prices are a little too high for some things.

Scan leave everyone I've ever used standing to be honest, though I've only ever had issues with 2 other companies. 1 was eBuyer who were messing me around a bit with some OCZ Ram a few years back, though they were always polite and tried to help, resulting in them putting a lock on the RAM so no one else could get some before mine went out. The other was Overclockers who were just all out abysmal on the phone, I was actually ready to go down to the Warehouse (from Redcar) and have it out with the ******* prick who I spoke to. ****.
Scan have been awesome for me. I know people have had no problems with over there, but I have and they suck. They quite literally do employ monkeys. I hate to say it but they are liars as well.

I think if you've had a problem where you have to phone OcUK you do realise just how useless they can actually be... The 0870 number boiled my blood the most because they connected you and left you on hold for literally hours... On the forum the put saynoto0870 in the word filter too funny enough :p

I used to use Scan quite a lot a few years back when I was at Uni and despite their daft standard £10 postage charge they normally came out on top. I used to check www.todayonly.co.uk everyday until I realised that they were the main reason for my huge credit card bill :( :)
I can only extol the virtues of Scan. For me, they have been fantastic and I've never had a problem with RMAs and the like. I really like the todayonly section and most of my system is from them.
If people think I'm always too harsh with OcUK - I'll explain why and see what you think.
Phase 1:
My X800XT is 1.5 years old. It starts to display artefacts, so I buy another fan for it - which doesn't cure it. I eventually phone OcUK to see if it was out of warranty. I tell him what has happened and that I've put a Zalman fan on it to try and cure it, to no avail. He says that it is still in warranty and OcUK deal with Powercolour's UK returns and I should stick the old fan back on and return it.
Phase 2:
I do this, 7 days later I phone up to be told that I'll be waiting a month as they've sent it back to Powercolour. FOUR weeks later I phone up and they have no idea what I'm on about and they'll send me a replacement ASAP. I get a nice new X850. Shame when I tried to play a game it screwed up displaying artefacts. I tested various things but no go. I sent it back - two weeks later I get it back and apparently it isn't faulty. So I test it in my mum's partner's PC (he had the exact make and model) and it displayed the same problems in his but his worked fine in mine. So...another £5 to send back. They keep it for another 2 weeks.
Phase 2:
I phone on the Friday and speak to a nice young man who says that I shouldn't have been treated this way. I noticed that on "this week only" they had an X1800XT for £160 and where selling the X850 which they'd given me for £153 or something. I mention this and also mention the £15 I'm down on postage and the months of waiting. He says fine, it'll ship today. Monday comes...nothing. I phone up and get "you must be having a laugh, who'd do that. That would be so stupid why would we do that?" - so I get nothing...next day STILL nothing so I phone up and get someone else. I explain to him and he just sighs (like he doesn't care) and says ok to the X1800XT. I get it next day and it isn't even in an anti-static bag.
Round two - the dell files.
I order a nice dell FPW2005. I was aware that I may get one with back light bleed. For the price I thought I'd go for it. I receive it and sure enough it has bleed – so I phone Dell. I get one next day and it's a refurb with more bleed. I phone Dell again and get through (after a lot of hassle with Dell) to their Scottish call centre (presumably the corporate one). He ships me a new one for next day and apologises. I receive this monitor and it has even more bleed. I decide that I'll get a refund as I use my monitor for films quite regularly and obviously it'll be dark when I watch them (I did then and up until recently when I got my HDTV). I phone OcUK and they say they'll have to receive a refund from Dell before refunding me. They give me the number of their contact at Dell, some American guy named Michael Jones (I think). Anyway he was top notch and knew his stuff. Andy McLane at OcUK said he would refund me as long as Dell had sent them some proof that they would be refunded. Michael at Dell (lol) did this.
A few days later OcUK say they have received the fax and that they will refund me. Andy McLane proceeds to take all of my card details over the phone (maybe a silly thing for me to do). He says the money should go in over night and it'll be sorted. A week later I have nothing and I'm fairly desperate for the £360 or whatever pounds that I'm owed. I phone again and I get the strangest thing.
Andy McLane - “What's this? I don't remember anyone authorising or even talking about a refund. We have nothing from Dell to confirm this. Have you tried phoning them? I should apologise for Dell, really – they are shocking. They are holding things up big style....”
At this point I nearly explode. I'm actually questioning my own sanity at this point. I phone Michael (who is such a sound guy) and he tells me that everything went through when he said it did and he has no idea why they are stalling. I phone OcUK again and get the same crap...but they agree to refund me. A week later I get the cash.
I ended up with a few FPW2005 from Dell though (Michael said it'd probably cost them more to pick it up, rather than leave it).
I know the dell story isn't so bad...but the refund process was shockingly bad. Anyway I was bored so I thought I'd go all out :D

Today, i've ordered from OCuk.. Order in at 9.30.. Despatched 30 minutes later.. Should have the goods tommorow. Can't argue with that. That's either good service or they aren't too busy :p
I'm sure about 10 years ago Scan had the reputation of a bunch of scam-mongers. Nice to see that's all changed, I'll start looking at their site again :)
I stopped buying from ocuk when they sent me some ram that was nothing like what I ordered, and they refused to refund because it wasn't something they even sold. And I stopped buying from Dabs after something similar. Can't remember what it was.
They were awful but are much much better now.
Anyone remember when they used to have Region 1 DVDs on Today Only? I was working in Chelmsford at the time where there was a local record shop who used to import DVDs. When he got new releases in there was always a big queue outside the door as DVD was in its infancy here. He got closed down by FACT and I then bought loads from Scan until they stopped selling imports. Just finding things on DVD was hard work at the time.

Haha i was about to say, i'd go through a bit of stress for a free Dell monitor... And you managed to get your 1.5 year old Graphics card upgraded for free, you're not doing that badly really ;) ;D

Well on the graphics card front - my card was around £153 and the new one was £160. They also owed me £16-20 in postage costs which they said they'd refund, but of course they didn't. Oh and the free dell monitor was really from Dell - not ocuk.
On the two occasions I have ordered from OCUK, the Ram took 2 weeks to get delivered but worked fine, the graphics card was faulty from the start and I had to jump through hoops just to get a RMA. I never did get my postage refunded either.
If you ever send anything back to OCUK and are worried they will just return it, 10 seconds on "chicken" setting in the microwave usually ends up in a new card.:)
Bah - after all the singing of praises in this thread, I've just had to chase them over an RMA. Support rep couldn't tell me anything I didn't already know either. :(
That isn't exactly the end of the world...:P
End of the world you say? We're all doomed. :p ;D
Scan have been excellent for me. Only problem I had was when they were facing a backlog of orders. It looked like they were going to miss my delivery date but I managed to get hold of someone and they fulfilled my order there and then, at about 6pm. Arrived the next day poifect :)

I've made one order so far from Scan and I was impressed with them. I ordered on the Saturday of the last Bank holiday weekend so I was expecting the stuff (bluetooth dongle/Samsung 500Gb disk/Icy Box external HDD enclosure) to be despatched on the following Tuesday for a Wednesday delivery. The site even told me that would be the case. Imagine my surprise to receive the goods on the Tuesday!
I had been wanting a Samsung disk paired with an Icybox enclosure for a while. I then noticed that the Samsung disk had £2-3 off one day and grabbed it.
I also got some free delivery. So I reckon I saved about £6-7 with that and the cheaper disk. How? Well I'm a member of the Hexus forum. If you sign up there and make 25 (non-spammy) posts you can align your Hexus account with your Scan account and receive free delivery. Scan ask that you make sure you order at least £20 excluding VAT and Hexus like you to carry on posting with roughly 3 posts a week. I don't think its much to ask for free delivery. This is only for the standard delivery I believe. If you want special Saturday delivery or something, expect to pay then.

Another excellent delivery from Scan, 2Gb of RAM to add to the media box, LepDust's thread on the benefits of more memory and as it was £28 with the free delivery from AV Forums I thought why the hell not. It arrived quickly and well packaged and it was cheap, does it get any better?
MB
Sounds like a great price although I've not kept up with component prices lately.
RAM is getting scary cheap. If you need DDR2 now doesn't seem like a bad time to get it.
On a related matter, in recent months I've also had stuff from Ebuyer (super saver - free - delivery) OcUK, and Dabs. The first two arrived fine, next day (yup, even free delivery next day though that isn't guaranteed). Dabs were a disaster (only went there because they were cheapest). Took a month of missed estimated shipping dates before the finally got it out the door, but they couldn't even put the right products in the box. When I complained they essentially told me they knew what they'd sent me better than what I could see right in front of my face. I did, eventually, get my money back. Certainly won't be going there again, and they used to be good. :/
Another vote for Scan here - bought my E8400 off them for £129 - a full £15 less than OcUK were charging plus I've got free delivery for life :)

I bought some stuff from Scan a while ago. It was a Samsung 500Gb SATA disk, an IcyBox enclosure for the disk and a decent Bluetooth dongle.
Scan were the cheapest for the disk and enclosure and no-one else sold the Bluetooth dongle. I got free delivery being a member of the Hexus forums. Once you make 25 (non-spam) posts you can activate your Scan account to align with your Hexus forum account. All they ask is to post three times a week and to spend about £20 (ex VAT) minimum. The order was despatched on a Sunday with delivery for Wednesday. Imagine my surprise to see it arrive on Tuesday which was amazing considering the Monday was a Bank Holiday.
I'm pricing up my next PC which will be some months off unfortunately but apart from the fact that Scan don't sell Geil or G.Skill RAM (only Corsair) I'm planning to get everything from Scan as they are cheapest. :)
I'm after some more memory for the laptop. Lep's thread has kinda given me a poke, being Vista and 1GB :)

Yeah my laptop at home needs some more. It has 512Mb over two sticks and I'd want 1Gb minimum so that'd mean 1 x 1Gb stick or 2 x 512Mb. I've been on the Crucial.com/uk site. A 512Mb stick is £21.14 (so £42.28) and a 1Gb stick is £56.39 which is a bit steep for me at this time. I'd rather get the 1Gb so I can stick some more RAM in there later without having to get rid of an existing stick of RAM.
Seems a bit steep. I'm looking at the Crucial site for mine and a 2GB kit (2x1GB) is £32.89

Crappy Acer laptop is why. :( I hardly use it. I leave it at home for Mum who seems to be OK with it. Got some spare parts so thinking of making a mini box PC that I can run Linux on. Got 2x1Gb sticks so it'll be a bit better equipped from a RAM point of view. :D
Nah - it's not the laptop's fault, it's due to it being old(ish) and using DDR. I guess it's the whole economies of scale thing with DDR vs DDR2, but still. :(
I just realised I think I still have some spare DDR SODIMMS, but they're only 512MB ones so wouldn't have done what you wanted anyway.
MarcLister
03-02-2008, 23:25
So kind of the laptop's fault then? :p
Yeah DDR2 prices are cheap. DDR prices aren't. The Crucial site can't even get the number of memory slots right. The scanner says I have three. Me thinks, "WTF?!". Me runs it again. Still three. OK so I check the manual. It says two.
Seeing as I'm building a new PC, needing just a case/psu, how much would you want for the sticks? If I build my new PC and can take it home and so permanently donate my laptop to Mum then 1Gb would be brilliant. It'd make things that little bit faster than 512Mb I think.
I need to see if I still have them and what spec they are first. Let me know what Crucial adviser thinks you need.
Of course, if you've already ordered then may as well go with those as they won't be compatible with newer hardware (no use you ending up with spares).
MarcLister
03-02-2008, 23:38
Haven't ordered yet. £56 for a 1Gb stick is a bit steep for me atm. I'd like to go with a 1Gb stick so I can expand RAM using the other slot.
This is what Crucial says.
http://b.imagehost.org/view/0052/crucialram.jpg
Just in case you didn't notice, the ones I have will be 512MB each at most. That is if I haven't got rid already. I'll check on Tuesday if that's OK.
MarcLister
03-02-2008, 23:43
2 x 512Mb is 2 x better than 2 x 256Mb. And no probs on the Tuesday wait. I'm at Uni in Salford and not planning on being home until Easter.
