Well that's my holiday allowance used for another year. :(
It's back to fighting for seats on the train, delays, boring meetings and paper work.
Oh well at least I get to put my feet up on the desk and browse the forums all day :D
Good to be back :) ('ish)
Where's our postcards and sticks of rock?

11 days of annual leave left this year :) Think I'm booking a week off in November to sit on my arse at home and do bugger all but no other plans. Far too much work to be taking holidays so I've given up on the 6 days time off in lieu I'm owed :(
Holiday blues suck...
:(

I want a week to myself doing nothing :(

It's hell having to work six months of the year. I get home every second month and I have nothing to do but slob about the house doing naff all for 4 weeks - oh woe is me :p :D ;D ;)

GIT :D
I still have 25 days to take... Unfortunately the only time I can't take 'em is around Christmas as that's our busy time!! Ah well...
Well it's probably closer to 20 days, but because I kick arse I might get away with it ;) :p By the time I take a holiday it'll probably be over 6 months from having started anyway.
Good advice
Absolutely. It's part of a healthy life/work balance. We've been left in no doubt that we're expected to use all our allowance, and I suspect questions will be asked if we don't.
Awwwwwwwwwww huddy :( Boo.
*huggles*
All you need to do is close your eyes and you can be anywhere in the world with whoever you like doing whatever you like! You don't need holiday time for that!
:)
Out of 15 days (I started in April, and it goes Jan to Dec), I have 6 days unallocated, and 4 1/2 days allocated, so not doing too bad :)
Can't afford to DO anything with them though :embarassed:
Kitten, I'm one of those people who will work all hours, but I'm damn sure I take my vacation. I've never 'lost' a day in 14 years, and I don't plan to break that habit. :)

making a rod for your own back there hon. The only way I'd ever not take hols/lieu owed to me is if I was self employed (don't know if you are!)
If you don't take it, you'll only end up losing out as it's unlikely you'll get any thanks for it, they'll just expect more from you. IF there's not enough resource, get more. If you're the only one that can do the job get them to sort your workload. If you are your own boss stop being a martyr and take some time off ;) The only way they'll realise your worth is when you're not there, and if your work is important enough they'll realise they need to take on someone else to cover everything. Again if you're s/e it doesn't really count because you have to work like a slave sometimes to make ends meet.
(we have a bessie mate like you and it worries me. I used to be the same until i saw the light!)
I'm not self employed (work for a very large multi-national) but I am currently one of the few people in Europe who could do my job though new resources are being sorted out they won't be effective until next year. I agree that I need to strike a heathly work/social balance but I think I can do that without the need to take holiday for the hell of it. I know it's my right to take it but tbh I'd rather just get on with my job and if I can take holiday later on I will. If not then it doesn't really bother me.

Could you get the money instead? At least way you'll be getting what you're owed :)

that's fair enough, it's your decision. Just be aware that you might face all kinds of crap if you decide that you do want to take your full allowance in the future because you'll suddenly be seen as not be 'committed' as you were before.
I find the reference 'taking a holiday for the hell of it' strange though, it's not 'for the hell of it', it's because you've earned it and need a decent break to be healthy - why would you work for nothing for 6 days? surely you can find something else to do other than work? :p Remember - all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy ;)
Do you mind me asking how old you are? I was exactly the same til I hit my mid-20's/early 30's then realised that there's more to life than wasting it away lining someone else's pocket. I enjoy my work, but only because I have a good balance - otherwise it takes over everything and starts to drag you down - I've seen it happen so many times. When i was a manager I looked for people who worked hard but smart - not those who had to stay all night and work their leave to cover their workload - if that was happening they either weren't competent enough or we needed more resource (usually the case, it seems to happen everywhere).
Still, i'm sure you know what's best for you. If you know how things are and still choose to do it, that's fine, but so many people think they're going to get something out of it, when usually all they get is used and abused (and not in a good way!)
I'm 26 and I'm sure in a few years my attitude with change but I'm currently at a point in my life where I can turn what I consider to be a good career (considering my Uni cock up) into a very sucessful one and it's going to take a lot of work and sacrifice but I'm also at the point in my life where I can do that as I'm not married with kids etc.
It's also worth mentioning that my job has me travelling all over Europe to see customers so it's not like I'm stuck in an office 8 hours a day.

Ahhh then that is different. You went to Vegas recently with work, right? That kind of job does have a different kind of give/take. I don't mean to appear disparaging at all I just worry that people are getting taken for mugs when they're working their guts out. used to piss me off royally when i was a team manager because I tried to get the best out of my team without taking advantage and it's a fine line sometimes. The kind of job you're doing does take a lot of give and take and mutual understanding because you're travelling and you take your time out when you can get it. My mum's the same (in Vienna at the moment, travels all over the world with her work), and i touched on it a little when i was a consultant.
You know what's best for you, that's what's important.
At my last company I watched my boss (and good friend) do 11 hour days normally without lunch for 3 years taking virtually no holiday only to be forced out of the company when he upset the CEO (who is a complete arse). Still he threatened to sue for constructive dismissal (or something like that) when he left and now drives a very nice Merc so not all bad. Anyways, the point of the anicdote is that I've seen a good friend get ****ed over and I'm not going to make the same mistakes.
I did spend 3 weeks in the US last month (week in Vegas) and since I've been back I've been to Rome and Lisbon and I'm off to Amsterdam on Wednesday for a week. Think that gives you an idea of what sort of life I live and it's likely to get totally manic Oct-Dec hence the lack of holiday taking time.
Paul when I was doing the travelling thing like you - I clocked up in a year nearly 2 months of overtime/TOIL. In a year I could never take it all, yes I did go on about 4/5 holidays a year, but even then I couldn't use it all up. After 6 years of clocking it up I was KNACKERED. When I handed in my notice I had a huge 3k payout plus my monthly salary and expenses owing to the fact I had accrued so much time off. Don't be lackadaisical with it - don't let them walk over you. Yeah you're young, but it can still affect you.
BTW (Off Topic), you've lost lots of weight, and since when did you get so handsome?! You were always a minger at uni! :p

Well I don't get overtime :( but my basic salary does make up for it :) It's not like I'm travelling all the time as Jan-Aug I can normally work from home one week in three to recover. It's just the Sept-Dec period that is crazy. I probably should have taken more holiday earlier in the year but like I said earlier I don't take holiday for the hell of it and had no reason to take it.

About 18 months ago. I put on a load of weight in my last year at Uni and then even more in my first year at work. Think when I went to Uni I was 11 stone (very skinny) and by the end of my first year at work 5 years later I was 16 stone (very fat). About 18 months ago I sorted out my diet (stopped drinking heavily 4-5 nights a week (seriously) and cut down amount of crap I was eating) and dropped 3 stone in 3 months which instantly made me attractive to totty (looked better and therefore was a lot more confident). Done better with the opposite sex in last 18 months than I had done in the previous 18 years :)

Even just chilling out at home? Or catching up with friends? I guess some people just feel better doing something rather than nothing - I'm a lazy arse though! I love my time off! :D
Me too. I'll quite happily do nowt even though there's always stuff to be done. :D
I need to look at my holiday. Part rather depends on a certain Hawaiian girls plans...
Still, whenever I'm single I find it very hard to find the motivation to take a holiday. I enjoy my work for the most part. I didn't enjoy my previous job as much, in that I got more stressed and holiday was becoming essential for me to survive.. now I've changed department everything is relaxed and great and I find myself less in need of holiday. Chester was great, it allowed me to relax and wind down from last role at work so I can focus on the new one. I always end up coming up to January and realising I've got two weeks holiday left to take and just throw it away doing random stuff. Still its better than losing it!
Both my previous and current companies are very keen on their staff taking all their holiday. My last one used to enforce it on me that if I didn't take time off during the leave year I'd be forced to take anything I couldn't carry over to the new year (3 days) off during the Easter break. Pretty much similar occurs here. Come Christmas the department heads get memos reminding them how many days each staff member has left to take and then getting them to encourage their staff to take the time off..
Even just chilling out at home?
Bores me more these days. Hate it :D I'd rather be out and away doing something, but I find it hard to motivate myself when I'm single. I like to go places and do stuff with people or a person.

not surprised with a fetching pink hat like that! ;)
The ladies loved the pink hat  No piccys from the club that night but suffice to say the ladies in Vegas are rather direct and I must admit I was rather tempted but managed to be a good boy :embarassed:

My priorities in life at the moment.
1. Lotus - though that will be gone when I can find a buyer who isn't a complete toss pot.
2. Job
3. Girlfriend
4. Mates
5. Other random stuff
I do love sitting around doing bugger all but I've made the decision that for the next few years my priority will be my job. For me money is a huge motivator and if I put the work in now it will pay off 18-24 months from now. I want to buy a house next year and living where I do I'm looking at a ~£180k self funded mortgage. That probably gives you an idea of what I need to be earning just to get on the property ladder :(
Tell me about it... I'm looking at high percentage mortgage as my deposit would only be a small 5 figure sum :/ It's scary ****.
Well as long as you're happy and you feel in control and not knackering yourself out then it's all good. :)

I about to drag this thread rather OT :embarassed:
Thinking about it I'm getting more and more convinced that in hindsight (yes that wonderful thing) going to University was not the best idea for me and I would have been much better off getting a job and getting on the housing ladder much much earlier.
I think back to 1999 when my sister bought a nice flat in Birmingham for £40k that's now worth close on £120k (she sold it for £80k in 2002 IIRC) and one of my friends in Cambridge who bought a tiny 1 bed flat for £80k back in 2000 that's now worth over £200k :'(
I'm now at the point where I really want to own my own property (my goodness if I'd seen this post a year ago I would have never believed it was coming from me) but I just find it utterly exasperating that I need to spend so much just to get a foot on the ladder. Anyways, if you got on the ladder before it went mad I officially hate you*
*I love you really but I'm currently doing a rather good hulk impression as I'm so green ;)
Well, expectation is house prices are going to be flat or falling for the next year or so (yeah, heard it before, but the numbers seem to agree this time), so maybe that'll help with climbing on the ladder.

Ok I tried that this morning... Unfortunately and I bumped into some young lady carrying her Coffee.. She had a lovely pair of Grande Starbucks :D
Genius Huddy! I have taught you well! Keep up the good work of dreaming and bumpage! :D
Paul - if you didn't go to uni I wouldn't have met you!!! :'(
It would have been great though to have bought a house and rented it out then gone to uni - you'd have had an income...
I need a holiday!! Maybe in october....
