More wirless problems

I'm using WPA security in both dual boot XP and Vista in the workshop.

Some time it works and sometimes it doesn't. It normally doesn't when I need it the most like last night I had 4 PCs to fix in the workshop. :(

When I connect, it finds the access point (signal around 50%) but fails to connect to the internet. I then re-input the security key. No joy.

Sometime it comes on after 30 minutes but nothing at all last night. I had to download everything from the house and burn the downloads to disk..

I'm hinking it has something to do with assigning or renewing IP addresses so wondering if assigning static IP addresses would make a difference.

Failing that, I might just ran that CAT5 cable from the router to the workshop as it's costing me time.

Any ideas?

Firstly, are you using a third party client to connect to the wireless network or is Windows managing it?

Need to isolate the connection problem further. When you say you cant access the internet, can you ping the router? If you can, have you tried going onto the router and pinging say www.google.com from that (if you have an option to)?

yes i'm running the Linksys software as I wasn't having too much luck with windows. I can ping the router. When you say "going into router" are you saying telnet to router then issuing the ping from there?

Aye, that or through the web interface, should be a ping option somewhere.

Persist with the Windows stuff, from XP SP2+ it's much more reliable than third party clients. Plus it'll connect the wireless right from system boot rather than waiting for someone to log on.

Ok, i'll give it a go later and post back what I find... Thanks for help as ever Daz. :)

Unfortunately I flashed my Linksys router, but there was definitely a 'ping' option there somewhere before I did. Probably under Administration or Diagnostics or somewhere like that.

Ok I've been in the work shop this morning and none of these connections are available.

So, taking the advice above, I can PING to router and to the PC indoors. I then PING'd to the DNS server and.... all started working... wtf????:huh:

Why would that resolve the problem.. Anyway, I'm looking at a more stable solution with statis IP addressing.. I'm sure the problem I had was to do with the renewel.

Not sure why pinging the DNS server would fix it......but when its not working can you ping external IP's, something like 212.58.226.232 which is www.bbc.co.uk, if you can ping the IP but not the URL, then its a resolver issue somewhere, are you running your own? or are you using proxy DNS on your router (you tell you PC the DNS address is the router rather than the actually DNS resolver). If your router is doing DHCP for you, there maybe a seeting to tell it to use the external DNS address instead.
