Just seen that the great Pavarotti (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6981032.stm) has sadly died at the age of 71. He shall be sorely missed and if you have any of his performances you should play them today. Nessun Dorma will be blasting out later on today.

I heard it on the news this morning driving into work. I was shell shocked. The frightening thing is I was listening to one of his CDs last night! I love opera (there's an admission that doesn't often reveal itself!) and this is the passing of a very very important figurehead of opera. What a loss. :(

Oh no, how sad :(

I was listening to Radio 1 this morning, no chance of them mentioning any half decent news on there

Heard that he'd taken a turn for the worse yesterday, but didn't know he'd died. :(

RIP Big singing fella.

I knew he was very ill and the last I heard he was weighing less than 10 stone.

The man had an amazing voice, I remember a few years ago he did some song or other with U2, Bono did his bit first and when Pavarotti started singing, the between the Irish one and the Italian maestro was *amazing*. Pavarotti almost blew Bonio off stage.

*hums Nesun Dorma*

You're not the only one. Out of the 60GB of music on my HDD, 12 of it is opera. And out of that 12, 8 of it is the maestro.

What hits it home, is that he's only 11 years older than my father... makes me feel a little bit :/

I think he brought opera to a lot of people that would never think of it or listen to it. I'm actually really gutted.

Italia '90 is the first World Cup I got into and I wouldn't have half the fondness for my memories of it without that Nessun Dorma rendition. Brings back thoughts of Gazza crying his eyes out, mini Coca-cola footballs and those crap Esso medallions!

I know that feeling :( 9 years between him and my father.

Cancer is horrible. He went home to die.

No one sleeps, no one sleeps...
Even you, o Princess,
In your cold room,
Watch the stars,
That tremble with love
And with hope.

But my secret is hidden within me;
My name no one shall know, no, no,
On your mouth I will speak it
When the light shines,
And my kiss will dissolve the silence
That makes you mine.

No one will know his name
And we must, alas, die.
The Prince
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars!
At daybreak, I shall conquer!

I don't know why but I've really been affected by this - it's really really got to me...

Or, as I sing the lyrics....

Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
Tu pure, o, Principessa,
nella tua fredda stanza,
guardi le stelle
che tremano d'amore
e di speranza.

Ma il mio mistero e chiuso in me,
il nome mio nessun saprá!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo diró
quando la luce splenderá!

Ed il mio bacio sciogliera il silenzio
che ti fa mia!

(Il nome suo nessun saprá!...
e noi dovrem, ahimé, morir!)

Dilegua, o notte!
Tramontate, stelle!
Tramontate, stelle!
All'alba vinceró!
vinceró, vinceró!
