View Full Version : Do you run?

First thread from me - yays!

I started going for morning runs recently becuase i'm not very active during the day and i'm starting that I'm getting tired more easily, but i'm having trouble pacing myself.

I feel that I'm running at an average pace and am running a 7 minute mile at the moment, but I cant do much more than that mile before getting pretty beat - I'm proud that I can do a mile in 7 minutes, but not proud that I start wheezing and feel like I'm going to collapse

I'm not sure whether I should go slower, which would be hard for me to do I think or just keep running at this pace until I can get further without tiring.

So, do you run? and if so do you have any tips for what I should be doing? and if you're proud of your mile time then post it up :)

Thanks For Reading

Matt :)

I only run when being chased, and even then it must be life threatening :p

I've started running everwhere (well, where appropriate anyway). Not timed a mile but I'm currently doing HIIT - warm up jog to the playing fields, then sprint for a minute, run briskly for two, then sprint again etc. First time I went out I was knackered doing the second sprint, now I can do about 20 minutes before jogging home again.

I can jog to the gym in 4.5 minutes - I think it's about a km but that's a pretty rough estimate.

I'm going to start running soon !

Need to do extra cardio to bust some fat.

I'm going to be doing a 2 mile jog 2/3 times a week.

I wish I could do the AM before breakfast jogs but I struggle to get my butt out of bed as it is :p

Yeap, I do (despite my size!). I run twice a day, about 1 mile before work (I mainly practice my kicking) and about 3 miles at lunch time.

Go slow and steady. I've never seen the point in trying to do a quick mile. I either try to work on my endurance or my short sprints.

I'm not proud of my mile time (it's quicker than a lot though), however the tackle I can make at the end of that mile makes up for it. ;)

As for pace, I'm not help as I struggle myself. I need to be chasing something so I tend to grab a running partner.

being currently unemployed and waiting to hear back about PhD applications means i get my lie in till 9, a before breakfast run every morning and then home to shower and carry on the day.. which usually consists of spraying my guitar project with some lacquer and then sitting on the forums :p

I run to music as I would hope most people do, so if you can find some tunes that get you a good pace to jog for 2 miles then let me know what they are as i'm listening to the slowest stuff I really have right now!

OT - you're just down the road from me Belmit, though I've never been to Alton.

More on topic:
I can't run :embarassed: Yeah I can sprint for the bus but that is it. I have tried going for a jog a few times, but I can't get into a comfortable pace.
And as for treadmills :embarassed: I end up getting dizzy, I can walk on them really fast but as soon as I have to switch to jogging/running I fall over :embarassed:

As has already been mentioned, if you're working on running further distance slow down the pace and work on endurance.

I hate running with a passion.

Unfortunately, it seems like the best way to condition your whole body.

When training for Race For Life I was running like a cheetah (go Thundercats Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo) but yesterday I felt like I was going to throw up on the treadmill.

I blame the cheese.

However, I play 2hrs of basketball 2/3 times a week, and play squash a couple of times a week. And then obsess in the gym ;)

I'm not too fussed on what style of running I'm doing - just the best way to lose a few lbs and get healthier and I assumed that long distance would be better than just going for 15 minutes or so. Am I right in this assumption?

On the treadmills in the gym the message is that 70-85% of your max heartrate is the optimum zone for fat loss so if you can keep in that sort of area then in theory you should be doing yourself some good. Remember though that diet is an integral part of weight loss and training if you want to do it properly.

The thing is if I do run, I can run and keep running. I'm just not very quick - I'm too bulky to be a good long distance runner and it puts a lot of strain on my knees.

I sometimes like running, but only on a treadmill. I HAVE to run regularly as I have to get fit..sometimes I like it, sometimes it's a real pain in the poohole. I'm crap at it though. Like Will I'm just not made to run...my comfortable pace is around 11kmph which I can't sustain for any length of time...yet :D

10.5kmph is as 'comfortable' as it gets for me. The most I have managed is 3k on 11kmph and I am well and truly pooped after.

8kmp was my comfortable speed when I started and I could only manage about a minute and a half at that before passing out. I now can run at about 9.5 fairly consistently but I feel like I'm holding back, 11.5 just seems to feel 'right' but I can't breathe pretty quicky.

The fact that you can physically run 3km at 11kmph! Amazing!

The equipment at my new gym is excellent, but all the weights on the machines are just numbered 1-20. If you want to know what the exact weight is you have to look it up on the chart that's stuck to the machine. WTF?

If I go on the treadmill at the gym I put it at an incline of 2%, which is supposed to better emulate running outside (although it's never the same). I do 20 minutes of interval training with two minutes at 8.5km/h and a minute at 13km/h. Much better than just plodding along at a set speed.

I go running at least a couple of days a week when I'm not down the gym. I enjoy running in the country with no cars and people.. Peace!! I normally run anything from 3 miles to 8 depending on how i feel. I've always been a good runner although I've been told by the docs to stop because my calf muscles are knackered and my knees aren't too far behind.

The key is to start very slowly and build into a rythem you are comfortable with.If you can only run a mile.. then that's fine.. you have a goal to reach 2... then 3 and so on. It takes me a couple of miles to get into a pace that I'm comfortable with but once i'm there I can keep going for ages. Just breath gently in sync with your pace and you'll be fine :)

Except maybe when I went out on a short jaunt at the cottage where there was a dead rat with loads of flies maggots and slug - did you see that Paul? :p yuk!!!

The joys of the countryside! :D Was nice to breathe in 'proper' fresh air though :)

Also I hate the people in the gym who use the treadmills at lunchtime and take the **** and run for 30mins... Grrr!!! If you want to do that go after work ffs!!!

You don't necessarily have to be overly strict but it is true that if you want to make progress then you do need to consider your diet. This is more a case of do as I say..... though because I never really give much of a thought to my diet, I weigh little enough that I could do with putting more on probably. :)

I haven't done much in the way of cardio recently but I used to run about 2km in 10 minutes including the 1 minute walk at 6km to warm up and the same at the end to cool down.

Always hate the actual doing it apart from the last few minutes where you know you're going to do it and it's almost over, but I'm always hugely entertained by the way the mind goes through huge mental cycles of 'I can't do this...I'll never do this...' to 'I'm going to do this! This is easy!'

Plus nothing else gives me such a huge endorphin rush.

I much prefer running in on roads than on the treadmill, somehow it feels more 'real'. I run (halfway) home sometimes which is 5.3 miles, I can do that in 40-45 minutes. I can't really advise you on slower music because I listen to Armin van Buuren's 'A State of Trance' radio show to run, its like having someone drive along side you with a whip!

/\/\/\/\/\ Solution = Gaffa tape.

;D

I get bulkified legs if I run - plus I can't run fast at all... it's like walking a bit faster with a bounce in it. As the article mentions above - sports bras-schmortz bras... no matter what I'm wearing I'm always managing to nearly black eye myself and other civilians as I run past.

I think I've gone off running though from when I was trained by a police fitness instructor...

6 - 7am starts of a mile "jog" and then 45min sprint training up a steep hill (doing push ups at the top... jogging back down... sit ups at the bottom... sprinting back up etc etc)

This is whilst having a 6foot brick house built man yelling "MY GRANDMOTHER COULD DO THIS BETTER THAN YOU - ANNND SHE'S DEEEEEEEAD RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN! YOU'RE PUTTING NO EFFORT IN - STOP SLACKING - DON'T YOU LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT - THAT'S "SORRY SIR" TO YOU - I DIDN'T HEAR YOU - 20 MORE PRESS UPS - FAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSTEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRR"

He did that to me one afternoon in the height of summer - I sweated so much I swear that my brain had shrunk through dehydration and when I shook my head I could hear my brain wallop from side to side. My legs were jellified (I was walking like a squid on ice), my face was beetroot and my left lung had imploded causing me to make shriggly-snorty noises from my mouth (all in all I looked a bit like quasi moto)

After putting me through the paces though, he turned around and said "Oooh you've done very well today I'm gonna take you to Poole Quay for a treat"!

"YAAAAAAY A PINT OR TWO" thought I... however... when we arrived in Poole I noticed a lot of people walking/jogging about with numbers on them... and with the biggest, cheekiest smile on his face he announced he had entered me into the 6km race.

My face just fell and went as white as micky j's face is now. I did it though (and didn't walk at all - purely because he was yelling at me across the park infront of hundreds of people). I did, however, come 2nd from last and half way round was over taken by a handicapped 75year old man.

Never again did I trust him. MEEEEEAN MAN. MEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN MAN

I've just started the whole going for runs in the morning thing as well. I got a manual treadmill, but that sucks. I end up getting tired and taking breaks and getting off, it's just all bad. I do more when I'm a distance away from home and have no choice but to get back!

I've started going out and doing 2 miles in the mornings. Bear in mind only a third of a mile so far is running and the rest is power walking / panting, but I'm getting there. It's hard to get started but from what I've heard and sorta felt so far after a little while you wake up wanting it. Makes me feel productive first thing in the morning before work too.

I hate running, but I used to have to do morning runs - that was several years ago now. Not a running person me. Knees are too knackered.

Routine used to be:
Up at 5am
Dress and go out and do 6 miles.
Get home, shower, dress for work *jeans and tshirt :D*
Get to work for 6:30
Have breakfast - usually some yoghurt and a bit of fruit
Check up on what I'd be doing that day - inspection, development, design, etc...
Pop into the development bays to take a peek at what toys we had in.
Around 7:30 go to the gym
Do various weights, core stability and other exercises.
Around 9:00 - massage :D

If develeopment:
10:00 - Go to the track and do whatever until about 5pm.
5pm - massage :D
6pm - paperwork....
7pm - gym - see above
8pm - go home.

If inspection/design
10:00 - go do design/inspection/paperwork
6pm - gym
7pm go home

Although that could be changed daily depending on what we were doing.

Started going to the gym again earlier this year and am finding the treadmill extrordinarily hard work - my knees are too buggered to cope really - I absolutely hate it. All the other stuff is working though. Lost a reasonable amount of weight - enough to force the other half to make me go clothes shopping...

Bugger....

I've just started the whole going for runs in the morning thing as well. I got a manual treadmill, but that sucks. I end up getting tired and taking breaks and getting off, it's just all bad. I do more when I'm a distance away from home and have no choice but to get back!

Manual treadmill? That is hell on earth, I've tried it once in a gym in Finland and as soon as you start off you damn near end yourself because it seems to have two speeds - flat out or stops dead - I've got a fairly long stride length so when I run and it stops dead I generally fall over. ;D

Ive not done weights 'properly' ever, but i have a 10Kg pair and a 15Kg pair that i use at home every now and again.

I dont know what you mean about form though, so I'm probably doing more damage than good..

As Piggy says there are a few people around here who know what they are talking about and regardless of a lack of knowledge I'll chip in with what I think probably. Is that 15kg for the pair or 15kg each? :)

I absolutely detest any type of exercise - unless it's in bed.

Mind you, I've been told I burn somewhere around 8,000-10,000 calories just being awake....

I've got a new client as of today, a health and sports club! I'll be doing them a website and email newsletters in exchange for some cash plus free membership. yay!

They're 10Kg each and 15Kg each. though the 15Kg are a little heavy :(

EDIT - just got back from the 2 mile, i made 1.5 running/jogging all the way and the last half mile was more of a run-walk-run-walk affair. i made it back to my house in 19 minutes.

i'm gonna try it again tomorrow and see if i can run the whole 2 miles.

Virus has finally gone \o/

Neck is foofed though :/

Been crunched once already this week and being crunched again on Thursday so jogging and weights are out of the window until it's better :(

I have been for a power walk this evening though - took me 40 mins and I think it was about 2.5/3 miles.

It was very enjoyable ! I really cleared my mind after a crappy day at work and saw parts of Braintree I never see whilst in the car !

Gonna try and do this 3 times a week :)

My kneck is also knackered - can't do any weights above shoulder level without getting pains so I'm sticking to chest press type ones.

Have head really sporadic attendance atm :o
Have been yesterday evening and this evening though and I'm hoping to make it tomorrow too.
Thursdays are a bit iffy as they've started putting 11-16 year old classes on at 5pm in the studio which is where the air weights are that I use - should still be able to do my cardio though.

Currently I can buy a "guest pass" for £4 for a week if you were still interested SW?

Oooh, that does sound rather a good deal!

How long do you have that offer for? These next few weeks are going to be hectic whether I get the PhD or not so I can't give you a definate answer for now.

I'd love to be able to powerwalk but walking fast gives me shin splints and its unbelievably painful after about a mile and resting for 5 minutes and then starting again doesn't help.

Will check if there's an end date on the guest pass offer tomorrow and if there is, I'll try and find out what offer will be replacing it and when :)
