I've just been listening to the Requiem for a Dream film score and just remembered hwo god damn good it it, good film too so that might be why i like listening too. Love the emotive feel to it. What else should i be looking at I can't remember exactly but i think i've heard the American Beauty soundtrack/score (whats the difference? I'm a bit of a n00b with this) and i think that was pretty good but i don't want to go getting stuff willy nilly....

Nightmare Before Christmas and Rocky Horror Picture Show are my fave scores.

Nightmare before Christmas, absamalutely. I just got a Jack jacket in the states :D

They do a snowglobe with him stood on the edge of the cliff that plays 'what's this'.

I've now got 2 NBC bags the kids have bought me. I use them for trips away. :)

ahahaha!! A quick trip to wiki tells me that a score is when the music is written specifically for the film - like Lord of the Rings. A soundtrack is when already exisiting songs or music is used for a film - Like Oceans 11 :)

Confirms what I thought it was. Plus you mentioned the awesome LotR soundtrack. 'The Bridge of Khazad Dum' is an excellent track.

Why the hell didn't i think of LotR! Right so guys i suspect i'm after scores only then now we've settled what they are. Gonna look into a few now. Not sure about some of the above (i think its the film names that are wrongfully putting me off) but i'll preview some and see what i think.

I'm after (as opposed to my dance thread :p) some highly emotive tracks that i can just lob on and use as background music when i feel in a different mood... :)

I am a huge score fan and I'm currently listening to the LotR trilogy. Lets see...

Armageddon
Back to the Future 1
Batman Begins
Battlestar Galactica S1, S2, Movie
Bond films
Chronicles of Narnia - The Battle track
Crimson Tide
Donnie Darko is strange
Gladiator
Gone in 60 Seconds
Independance Day
The Last Samurai
Mission: Impossible 2
The Peacemaker
Pearl Habour
Pirates Trilogy
The Rock
Serenity
Sneakers
Spiderman 1 + 2
Star Trek 1-10
Star Wars 1-6
Thomas Crown Affair
Twister
X-Men 1 + 2

Any of those are good. Get anything by Hans Zimmer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001877/). He does fantastic scores. He did The Rock, Pirates 2 + 3, Peacemaker, Batman Begins, Gladiator, Last Samurai, MI2, Crimson Tide and so on. Brilliant guy. John Williams early stuff is also great. I find his new stuff has gone a bit meh and I can listen to Ep3 thinking its Harry Potter and at times Jurassic Park (also top).

I'm a big Danny Elfman fan. His scores are usually slightly offbeat and leave you uneasy. Excellent stuff.

Yeah. He does a lot of work with Tim Burton. Love their pairings.

Thought Zimmer did Pirates 1 as well?

Hence why the pirates music sounds so massively similar to a segment of the chase music from the rock

petemc
13-09-2007, 22:49
It is very Zimmery but he didn't actually score it. It was by a guy called Klaus Badelt (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0046004/) who worked with Zimmer. Zimmer was on the credits though.

I've just remembered i've already got Pirates and love it, and its indeed Klaus.

Peter they look excellent, so far (since theres too much on the list now :p) i've shortlisted:
LorT - Howard Shore
Nino Rota - Godfather Trilogy
American Beauty Score - Thomas Newman
James Bond - John Barry
Hans Zimmer seems very interesting Batman begins score was excellent i remember that well, can't go wrong with the rest of his stuff either, so looks like i'm on to a winner!
Serenity should be good too i love that as a film so the i'll no doubt have accidently enjoyed the music.

Thats what i love about scores of music from films ive seen lots and enjoy, i already recognise the music and i enjoy it in a totally different way! :D

Cheers guys! :)

Cruel intentions sounds like a plan, but i'm thinking of scores (http://www.amazon.com/Intentions-Selected-Suites-Ottman-Anthology/dp/B000051Y56) and not soundtracks (i've probably got most of those tracks anyway i can whip a playlist up for that type of thing).

BTW is it bad i've never seen Blade runner? It's just one of those films i've never got round to seeing...

Loving all these suggestions guys, definately hit the jackpot here, far too much to listen to properly just yet! I've put my Pirates back on, forgotten just how much i loved the score to this... I'm imagining Serenity to be somewhat similar but i can't find any previews annoyingly, think i'm after that next (i guess its pretty rare though, film didn't do so well an all).

Serenity is really quite different. Its brilliant though. Its very subtle too in some respects. The series/film is basically a western in space and China became a hugely powerful country so our culture in the future is integrated with that. Theres some great tracks were you can hear those influences in the music. My favourite tracks are the quiet ones. Serenity, Final, Prep for flight, and Love. Its just a real damn shame the acoustic theme tune thats on the end credits isn't available anywhere.

Is the opening theme on the it? The one with the huuuuge ass opening cut. I think i remember it and i LOVE that!

Where it shows the sign on the ship and zooms all the way out and around the ship then goes in for the landing sequence where they may crash?

LeperousDust
14-09-2007, 20:26
Yeah thats the one, loved it
Just found this (http://www.soundtrack.net/albums/database/?id=3888) which suggest the end credits are on the soundtrack cd?

Oddly enough, the track "Into The West" (LoTR: Return of the King says the 'Reel Chill' booklet?) sounds very much like the Serenity intro.

Edit: Just checked UteLube, my copy doesn't feature a bint singing, so it sounds more like Serenity.

Hehe! Your "absamalutely" made me giggle!

Never seen Nightmare before Christmas and always wanted to. I will make it a definite for this year.

My favourite composer in the world... MiiiiSSSssssssssTER JOOOOOOOhn WILLIAMS!

When I was in America in 1998 I missed seeing him at the Hollywood Bowl by ONE DAY! I was so upset! Though I did manage to sneak in and see the orchestra rehearsing on a bright, beautiful sunny day. It was spine tingling... my Pa, Brother and I were the only ones there sat smack bang in the middle of the amphitheatre! Was just... gob smacking.

/me wants to see him live desparately

All his music just fits perfectly and naturally with the mood. Without fail he manages to capture my full attention and skip a heart beat everytime.

Also... Howard Shores score for Silence of the Lambs (without it the film was only just bare-able to watch alone at night but with it... nuh uh, no way would I watch it!) and James Horner (Aliens Soundtrack).

Hans Zimmer doesn't do a bad job in Gladiator either... I think I may have very similar tastes to Ridley Scott :)

Geniuses. All of them! We should all bow down to these people, they're superbly talented and well. Phenomenal!

Annoyingly theres the end credits track which is the first couple of minutes from the end credits. If you watch all the credits at the very very end is a brilliant acoustic of the original show's theme tune. So hard to find :(

LeperousDust

Wow, never heard that, gonna go check it out now when i find my serenity dvd, you seem to have pretty similar taste to me in music. I've had some Zimmer on tonight while i've been doing other things and it makes great "background" music whilst i'm concetrating on other things. I really enjoyed Batman Begins :) Desperately want Serenity, but its 79 days old on my newsgroups and my retention is a small 30 days (:p).
