This is a discussion thread. I understand they are not everyones taste and i respect that. But if that is the case then please stay out of this thread, as much as you are entitled to your opinion i don't want to hear it.:p
Sidewinder asked a few questions and since quite a large percentage of the members here have tattoos i figure why not make a thread.
My stars on my spine were my first tattoo. I got them just after i turned 18. I'm not going to lie, it wasn't hugely pleasant but it wasn't awful. Erik my tattooist started at the top on my neck.
Having my neck tattooed was a bizarre experience, feeling buzzing in my throat. Errrk. It wasn't really painful just strange, like someone scratching away at my neck. Mid-back was probably the most painful as the bone is closer to the surface, i stupidly forgot to eat and my blood sugar dropped half way through i went pale and promptly boked lucasade orange. :p After a little break and some sugary snack, i was back to get the last few done. It was bearable and the entire tattoo took an hour and a half. Cost about £70.

That has answered the vast majority of my questions in a single post :D
I am going to be getting a guitar neck with nice inlays down my spine sometime within the next 365 days heh.
Is there an online resource that shows a range of tattoo artists with ratings/reliability/horror stories of each one? Or is there a registry of recognised artists?

Linkie to the best on the web! (http://www.bmeink.com/bme-tatt.html)
Not a range of artists but there is stories and user galleries. Best way to find a good artist is to go round the ones in your home town, asking annoying questions, telling them about your design and seeing what they say/suggest.
List of annoying questions:
Can i see your portfolios?
Hygiene certificates?
Recognition by environmental health?
How long have you been tattooing?
Have you ever had an unsatisfied customer?
What is your hygiene procedure?
What do you autoclave?
Do you use a fresh needle every customer?
I'm sure mohinder and some other knowledgeable people will appear soon. :)
I've got my star sign (Taurus) on my upper right arm. Had it done last year and have been trying to find something to go on my left arm ever since. I eventually want something going from my left elbow to just above the shoulder, then something else to blend in with the current tattoo on my right arm. Don't have any pics on this laptop and the camera lead is at work.

I love mine and they mean the world to me, they have two meanings. One of which i don't mind telling people the other is much much more private. I like showing them off because i am proud of them but understand where you are coming from Lozza.
With my back i can choose to show or not to show i like that freedom.

Bad tattoos make me cringe. I've seen some horrible tattoos, including one on a 15 year old at my old high school of her name in 2" high lettering on the bottom of her back, i couldn't help but think "no guy will ever shout the wrong name at least".
Some people don't like colour tattoos, i have both colour and plain black. The only thing i'd say about colour is that it needs to heal well to look good.

I wont be getting colour on mine, i think it would be a bit too distracting or stand out more than what i'd want a tattoo for.
I have two that I want. I know exactly what they are and where I want them, I just need to get it organised :) 1 is 100% def, the other is dependant on outside forces.

Done very recently, less than a month ago and right now I love it so so much! It just feels a part of me now. I definatly dont want any huge tattoos, I like them discreet and you can only see my tattoo if I lift my arm.
The sign in itself means a lot to me, as music is the hugest part of my life, I play the bass and am also left handed so a bass clef seemed to suit me :) also a present from my best friend for my 20th.
The pain of it? Alot of people go to me "ouch!! thats the most painful place!" but I wouldnt know any different. Like Blackstars, it was painful but not unbearable. I managed to talk through it and have a decent conversation with the ocassional wince. No rush to get another but if I do then I want my zodiac sign Leo tattoe'd on the back of my neck I think.

I only get mine when Saturn is in it's third house :p
My advice to anyone thinking about a tattoo, is to think long and hard. Follow advice from the school of Piggy "look at the imagine every day". Then bloody well go for it, my mum says "you will regret it when you are 50" i personally want to have things to regret. :)

My first tattoo I got when I was 17. Had a tattooist friend who came into our shop who agreed to not only do it undersage, but half price as well as my little sister paid for it. Went to the parlour with my Dad and chose one, thought about it for months and then got it done. It was a fire and ice ying yang on my left shoulder blade, kind of represents me tbh. I show it off when I wear halter necks but it's hidden under most other things.
Next I have a celtic band with a single red rose put around my ankle. I had fallen in love with the design and spent a long time making sure it was what I wanted before having it done. I can show it when I wear short pants or skirts, but is hidden under trousers.
Third was a design on my lower back that I designed. Took months to perfect and months to make sure I was making the right decision. Spent a long time with the tattooist as well to make sure he understood exactly how I wanted it including the fading of colour at the edges. Took hours and hours of tatooing because of the fading too! :o I show this one off when wearing belly tops but it's easily hidden as well.
Finally I had a purple rose with another black celtic symbol done on my left thigh. It represented spontaneity as I saw it and had it done within hours. I plan to get it extended some day (which is why I chose the design in the first place) so I have a rose vine from my ankle, winding up my leg and onto my hip. This one only gets shown when I wear a skirt or flash people when I'm drunk! ;D
10 years since I got my very first one and I still love them all. :)

Ahh you forgot to say it is a camo duck, as if this explains anything about it.
'scuse the manky feet, this was just after they had been done.
For some reason photobucket don't like my feet either :(
I though, oh it won't hurt. So so wrong :( officially hurt more than anything else in the whole world. I have really sensitive thin skin over that part of my ankle. (Has anyone else ever tried to take a picture of their ankles, it is really hard)

There is a great tattooist in Fareham but I am still half (ok mostly) still asleep and I can't remember his name :o
Mine have all been drawn up and done by Emma Grech of Lady Luck Tattoo Studio in Fawcett Road. She has also done all of Mics.
I do have some pics of them all online but I've been meaning to take some better ones so I'll do that tonight :)

Every other tattoo thread I've ever posted in (other than on tattoo forums) has been trolled by people who don't even try to be nice about things.
There may well be some people who don't like tattoos on here but i think they respect those that do enough not to say anything that is hurtful or downright mean. :)
I'm very much in the same boat as Leo, I've been thinking about it for years but never found a design I'm happy with.

You really do need to be completely happy with a design, and I've noticed that designs that mean something to be tend to be easier ones to fall in love with. :)

Being an apple fan I've been toying with the idea of a small black apple logo but also like the power button so perhaps a mixture of the two like this (http://www.badasszebedee.com/images/tattoo.jpg) but obviously on me and not there :p

I've got 2 planned, just need some money and wait 18 months to get to the top of the tattoo artists waiting list!
I've waited 4 years for them, so 18 months isn't too much longer. I'm getting swirling binary around the top of my right arm, and a plaque with the number 13 on it and ivy trailing down it on my wrist to just above my elbow
I never thought about having a tattoo until about 12 years ago when I saw the symbol I chose. It has a lot of meaning for me and as soon as I saw it I wanted it on me. I waited a year or two to see if I still felt the same about it and I did, so I drew it, redrew it how I wanted it, added some extra bits in (rhunes of my kids as I didn't want words) booked myself in and have loved it ever since.

as an explination. my friends and family have given me a duck obsession. mother bought me a camo rubber duck for christmas a few years back (i spent christmas morning piercing him) and then other people got me more and eventually ended up with about 30 or so.
for my bithday my friend offered to get me a tattoo, her suggestion was a camo rubber duck. that duck has since transfered ownership to my little brother (who is now 3, he was about 1 at the time) so it makes me think of him everytime i see it and it always brings huge smiles.
the cat was in response to the same friend from the duck. for her birthday i got her a tattoo, and suggested a duck. she would only do it if i got a cat (she's a massive cat person) so i got this, and she got a wee black duck insider her ankle.
I know women that would kill to have a figure like that :)
*raises hand* :)
I think tattoos are all about who they are on and if it suits them really. What looks great on one person can look rubbish on another and some people don't look right with them at all. Luckily here people have really thought about what they want and have very well done tattoos :) Strangely enough I found that if someone has a good tattoo that suits them after a while you really don't tend to notice it as such, it's just part of them.
Think Piggys idea of having it drawn on and then photographing it is a really good idea. Especially for a big piece, I think that would give your Mum at least a little bit of reassurance Paula.
who you planning on going to? tbh if i was willing to wait that long i'd probably hop over the pond and go see guy atchison(i want this man to tatoodle me)
I'm going to see the guys at mantra tattoo studio (http://www.mantratattoo.com/news/index.php) in cheltenham. I have it on pretty good authority that these guys rock - only reason I'm waiting is because of their list, which can only be a good sign.
does that guy have a website?
http://www.hyperspacestudios.com/
the only one of the mantra lot that i know of is Paul Scarott, work i've seen in the past and his portfoli there look outstanding. Sarah Street's work looks really good as well. i deffinetly wouldn't be waiting that kind of time for either of the other 2 though.
what is it you're planning on getting?
Both of my tatoos are done by Dave Wiper, who I believe is quite good in the tatoo world.
Both of them are 'off the shelf' and were done more for psychological reasons than the fact I put a lot of thought into it or anything. However they are both very pretty and I don't regret them for an instant. For some reason I have lost all my pics of them but the dragon on my left arm is called Douglas and the dragon on my right arm is called George.
I want my next tatoo to mean something, although I do enjoy just having pretty things on my body. (fnar) I always wanted a Mini tatoo when i had a Mini but I think that would be something I would regret, and at the moment the Toyota logo seems cool but it doesn't seem to be something I'd want permanent.
I guess something will come to me in a flash of inspiration and I'll get it done when I have the dosh :)
I'm getting a string of binary 480 digits long starting at the top of my shoulder and swirling around my bicep until it stops.
then I'm getting a black plaque on my wrist with a white 13 and tri-colour black, white and grey variegated ivy trailing down my forearm
you totally said that already, and i totally read it... and didn't even think that it was you that said it. my heads up my backside this evening.

my first, a paw print on the bottom of my back, i got when i was 17
it was a rebellion against myself
i had always struggled with negative body image - not liking my weight, my figure, my hair, usual girl stuff
my idea of control was to have a piece of my body that i would always like -
something i've put there just for me
in the following year i got 3 more
in my first year at uni, i got very involved in my chosen subject (oncology), my other tattoo is a small heart, designed to look like it was made out of the cancer awareness ribbon
(however popular opinion seems to be that it looks like the walls logo!!)
(i'll put piccies up when the man with the camera gets home)
as soon as is reasonably achievable (money and time permitting) i am going to have my shoulder heart added to, i want a whole shoulder 'sleeve' of symbols that mean things to me, wrapped in either ivy, lillies, or random squiggly patterns (i know this idea needs more thought!)
i also really want a number 13 on my foot, above my big toe :) and a binary 8 figure string on the inside of one of my fingers

I've always loved tattoos - on some people. Some people seem to be able to pull them off better than others. Some are just amazing to look at from an artistic/talent point of view, some are poignant, some are just funky/cool. I was very close to getting "something" on the back of my shoulder as it's the part of my body I'm most fond of it's something I wouldn't mind sharing. However it came to trying to design/choose something and I couldn't make up my mind and thought if I was that indecisive I probably don't need one - 10 years have passed and whilst I still think they are cool I don't think I'd have one now - I'm not one of these people that can pull it off. I'll just go to the gym instead :po

Does any one know if tattoos on feet and ankles hurt more that usual? I heard a rumour that one of the tattooists in Wakefield would do your other foot for free is you could stand having one done :/

The couple that I've thought of have both been fairly geeky, but are the sort of thing that I could live with. However, work may not like them.

your feet tend to hurt a bit more as the flesh tends to be thinner. the upside being people that tend to want a tattoo there tend to be more sure of it and as such as willing to deal with a bit more discomfort (for most this is all it is, an hour after it's done you'll forget the pain and love the design)

are they meant to be petals/wings?
to me, they look like a sliced open lily, really nice :)
i really really want a big piece on my back, but i'm worried about my other little ones looking out of place
how did you decided what would look good with your stars?
i mean, its a fairly old school / new school combo - but neither looks wrong next to the other
:)

I just sucked it up and went for it, figured if i loved them both separately i could love them together whether they looked out of place or not. :)

I've got hold of a picture big enough to try and scale up to sort out what I'm after.

If I clean that up and remove the string lines and fingerboard colouring some more then that is what I would love to get on scale up my spine.
If you took the pic as it is into a tattooist, they should be able to draw it up for you :)

Currently very sore, although colouring in needles are made from bunny tails and duckling down they have a habit of being a bit nippy after 2 hours.
The colour looks more like it does in reality in the second picture the first one looks more blue. (sorry about crappy pictures)
Mine's going to hurt isn't it?

Well i'm not going to lie and say no, but i will say that everyones experiences vary. I barely feel any pain during outlining, shading is a bit more sore and colouring in is the worst. Although the feeling of getting a tattoo is almost impossible to describe, since i have never had a tattoo on my arm i can't even give you an idea of how it was for me.
I will say that this is quite a large tattoo and it is doubtful that yours will take over 2 hours, so far what you see is 5 hours work and it is looking to be at least another 6 hours to get it finished.
Mine's going to hurt isn't it?
Asked Mic and he said the one on his arm didn't hurt but then he has a high pain threshold and as long as he can see what is being done, things don't hurt as much.
(that probably was one of the most useless posts every :o )
i hate getting tattoo'd. i have quite a high pain threshold but when things drag out they start to get to me. piercings i've had pretty much the most painful things i could and i was relativley fine with them. tattoos after about the first 5 minutes i start to get moaney.
i'd do it again in a second though so it can't be that bad.

I found the shading on mine more painful, took about 2 hours in total but it was completly bareable :)

Yep colouring needles are the big fluffy ones. :)
My back hurt alot in places and not much in others but the tat on my upper arm didn't hurt at all.
As Sam said if I can see a needle going in to me, be it injection or tat, then it doesn't hurt but if I can't see it then it does but just depends on how much.
Weird aren't I :)

(Very fresh, still slightly gooey sorry. Just realised you can also see the nice tape marks, lovely :p)
As you can see still a fair amount of work to be done but its getting there slowly.
