I was having a discussion with my mate last night about where we think we stand politically speaking roughly, the sort of conversation that stems from a few beers and putting the world to rights. This reminded me of the Political Compass (http://www.politicalcompass.org/test), so I thought since we have a few more members here now it might be interesting to see where we all stand roughly or perhaps more interestingly where you think you stand. According to the test there I am: Economic Left/Right: -5.62, Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.69 which puts me a little to the South-West of Ghandi however I can't say I totally agree, generally I feel the state should not interfere with a persons actions as long as you aren't hurting someone else and you are free to do whatever you want provided you can pay for it but the state should support those who cannot support themselves.
How about anyone else? :)
Mine is:
Economic Left/Right: -3.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.77
Which is about where I thought I'd be :)
I'm down there with Ghandi, Mandela and the Dalai Lama. I have no idea what that all means.
Go south west a tad from the centre of the cross towards Ghandi, turn west for a small distance and that's me.
Here's me...
Economic Left/Right: -2.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.92

Pretty much on top of the Dalai Lama, I can think of worse people to be like :)

I rank alongside Gandhi :)

Pretty close to me :)
Economic Left/Right: -3.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.26
Though I tend to avoid politics so couldn't really explain it :p
I can't get through it, got to page 3 and there was too much I don't understand and or couldn't work out. I hate politics.
Give me an engineering or physics questionnaire please :)

Just sorting through some old files and I just discovered the results of when I did it first: Economic Left/Right: -5.00, Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.77 so I'm apparantly moving further left. And I thought I was mellowing in my old age. :embarrassed:
Hmmm,
Economic Left/Right: -2.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.87
----------
Not certain if thats good/bad really?? So really a touch left, but i'm not feeling all of the Labour love.

I'd be interested to see which members I align most closely with, I would guess at Stan and Phykell but thats just a hunch
MB
Seems Zirax and I are on the same level.
Must do it again to get the exact numbers.
I was waiting for Feek to post before mentioning it. But it seems that the "Essex man" has struck a bit here. I remember back when labour came to power one of their targets was to convert Essex man and Mondeo man.
I have touches of labour and conservative really. I don't feel that I would vote labour, however the conservatives are rather pants with Cameron. He came in thumping his chest but you only hear a little squeak every now and again. I also disagree with a fair few of their policies really. So generally a new party in the middle would suit me :)

They didn't have to do any converting with me.

I was hoping to be spot on the middle to be really confused about the way I feel! ;D
edit: I redid the test so I wasn't distracted at work - my answers varied by .5 nothing more. I'm happy with that.

Bit further away from Ghandi!
It's a good quiz, although the concept behind it is perhaps of greater interest than the quiz itself (i.e. reconsidering the traditional 'bipolar' political line with an additional axis). I've taken it a number of times now, and have shifted around within it (as the test and my outlook on life have changed) although have as far as I remember remained in the same quarter (bottom-right).
Economic Left/Right: 4.00

I'd say I was more right than that personally, but these things aren't going to be very accurate I guess.
Wonder what a bit longer working for a bank will do to that? ;D

Unique, weird. It is a fine line. ;)
I'm rather interested by the people who have gone far left on the social scale but are rather right wing on the economics scale. It appears to be "you can do whatever you want but you'll damn well pay for it". :)
I find it interesting how liberal I seem to be compared to a number of you, despite my religious views. Usually those who are religious are perceived as being very authoritarian rather than liberal.
I would have thought it'd have been the otherway round - forgiveness and all that sort of thing. I'm definitely slightly to the left and definitely more libertarian. But I knew that before I did the test. I think the closer you are to the "middle" the more balanced and fair your outlook is.
I think the closer you are to the "middle" the more balanced and fair your outlook is.
Personally I wouldn't say you could determine something like fairness through this, but neither would I say you could accurately determine your politically leaning through the questions posed. You can get a rough idea but there's too many 'what ifs', plus some of the questions often made me think 'Well it depends on the situation'. It tries to be too black and white imo.
And peoples definition of 'fair' will vary as well.
Agreed. I was basing my answer on the limitations of the test I guess. I agree some of the questions in my eyes had 2 answers depending on the situation. Like all tests they are flawed by the limitations of the questions and their interpretations. I guess it can reflect generally how you feel, which on the whole I agree with.
Personally, I sit on the fence between left and right as I agree with a bit of both. Similarly I sit on the fence between authoritative and libertarian ways as it entirely depends on the situation. Ones ability to move from one to the other is a sign of flexibility and diverse control and understanding of the world around them - in my opinion of course. :)

To be fair then I distrust these kinds of things as they deal in absolutes.
I do not, I deal in active situations.
I may have studied this crap for 5 years but I am yet to find one of these things that actually makes sense when I diligently go through the ambiguous questions that are asked.
I know where I stand, it's nowhere near where any of these things put me.

Its inferences are generally pretty accurate, to be fair—in terms of quadrant certainly and typically in terms of more exact placement too.
Don't see how you can put a number to 2 decimal places on a political leaning, tbh

It a way of quantifying something, it is a way of representing someone's political views in a way that can be compared, catalogued and analysed. When it comes down to it most everyone will take each decision that comes at them at its merits rather than just following the party line as such.
I am also INTJ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INTJ) and ESAK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartle_Test) - interesting scores and all but they don't actually represent me. I am INTJ but INTJ is not me!

It means statistically when all of the results for BD are plotted together you could state that BD is more or less politically inclined along both axis. It is a statistical tool, it isn't meant to mean anything about you or me or the differences between us specifically.

OK, I hacked away abit in C# and generated this:

The axis is the same as the graphs on Political Compass with Authoritarian on the top, Libertarian on the bottom and the traditional Left-Right economic scale going from Left to Right unsurprisingly.
Sorry about the names crashing together, I don't think I have enough time to implement collision detection.
