Well... I've done it. I've moved it from my testbed. And, well I'm up and running - no crashes so far (touches wood) and things seem to be working ok. Slowly installing apps as I need them - haven't tried burning a DVD or an ISO image yet, but it seems to be not bad. It's only the 32bit version as I have an old computer and it's not worth my while - unfortunately I only scored 4.9 on the performance thing as my 3D gfx aren't really up to muster (though it is a little overclocked (the gfc card that is)). I have to say having 2gb of ram seems to have made all the difference to speed. It boots in about 30s flat from inital power on which is nice. And program cache seems well utilised as things just open, quickly. It would have been nice to have been able to use the full 64-bit ability of my PC, I don't know if it would have made it that much quicker though - is my computer being pushed at all now it's only driving the 32bit side of things? I've come over from XP64 - which was brill.

It's taken me a bit of time to get used to it, it's all a bit "big" and cartoony, and some of the menus/systems are a little less intuitive than they were - but so far so good. It is very different.

Do I like it? Well, I think it looks nice, I don't like how it tries to do too much for you, but I think I've managed to break that and customised it enough for it to do what I want it to do (i.e. file locations etc...).

Overall verdict? I wanted to hate it, but as support for it is more common now it seems good. I wonder what older programs will be like on it - I'll no doubt update with my hair ripping experiences.

The laptop is on it too, though it's a bit slower with only 1gb of Ram and scored an average 3.2.

Now I just need a decent sized screen - ideally 2 :p I have no money so I'll just have to wait for that treat :p

Which version of Vista do you have?

Borne.

Me and Vista are falling out a little at the moment in the the bluetooth on my laptop has just stopped working. It's frustrating how little information you can get from the default MS stack when you want to :/

Not played with BT yet... I seldom need to - but it's interesting you're having issues. Pretty much all of the problems I had with x64 (which was about 3 in 3 years!) haven't occurred yet in Vista - and it's running surprisingly quickly on my old PC. I'm going to give it a month before I cast a verdict - despite having tested it for a few, it's now going to be my main OS.

It was bound to happen with something. Currently trying to manually flash the card firmware to see if that helps.

I don't know whether I was using the wrong version but I totally hated it :( I've setup 2 laptops now with Vista on there and the way it kept asking if I wanted to do everything nearly caused the laptops to fly out of a window

I suppose if I had more time to play with it I'd like it more but I don't have a copy of Vista and don't have a machine capable of running it.

The only thing that is annoying is that it asks you if you are sure you are sure that your dure that you want to delete/run that program.. "Yes".. Are you sure now".. You can almost hear Mrs Doyle...

leowyatt
26-09-2007, 09:36
nah the Mrs Doyle wouldn't ask if you wanted to do it.

It'd just let you get on with it whilst saying "go on go go on go on go go on go on go go on go on go go on go on go go on" ;D

MS handholding, it's gotten worse for the end user. Luckily it's pretty much all off in server 2008 (well, no worse than 2003 anyway), else there would have been some p****d off techies moaning at Redmond.

Anyway, I sorted it last night in the end, 2's night's a charm it seems. I think an update must have borked it, can't think of much else that would cause it to break for no reason.

I just turned that off so it stopped asking me. Of couse, it asked me if I was sure I wanted to turn it off, and I'm sure when I said yes I heard a little scream from within the laptop, but all is much better now I'm not being asked for confirmation every time I want to do something :)

Will

In a way I quite like it - since it's not often I launch programs that require confirmation anyway. :)

Can UAC be totally disabled to WinXP standards? :p

Daz
26-09-2007, 10:08
If you stick with it you might find you can live with it. I have, and I can. While not as food as they way Linux/Unix implements what they're getting at, it's better than before, and it is a decent line of defence.

Once you've stopped messing around so much you dont see it a lot ime. Though I did see it a fair bit last night of course ;D

[edit]kk - Yes :)

I see it maybe once a day, unless I'm doing software installation testing and in that case I've learned 'the method' - run a command prompt as administrator, get one prompt at the start, job done.

I can live with that.

Daz

What is desperately needs is a way to elevate an already open command prompt. It's a right pain for a keyboard monkey that.

Mark

Dunno about desperately needing that, but certainly useful. Save from having to enter a command or two to 'catch up' having to open a new command prompt doesn't cause that much bother.

Biggest problem I have with command prompts is that I've got used to Windows programs getting launched and then the command prompt coming straight back - unfortunately that's one of the undesirable side-effects of UAC.

I'm one of few who actually kinda prefers vista to xp... one of my HDDs is a little unstable which often caused xp to BSOD but not had one in vista - and it rarely crashes...explorer someones needs a restart when theres a lot of USB disk activity...but so far so good tbh.

I am equally lovin it :D

Perhaps it's just me then.

Case in point, it's annoying when I cant whack WindowsKey+R, type cmd, and execute ipconfig /release without getting an error. I dont want to have to use my mouse to do that :/

I've found a third party tool which helps to some extent (Elevate (http://www.wintellect.com/cs/blogs/jrobbins/archive/2007/03/27/elevate-a-process-at-the-command-line-in-vista.aspx)), and there are even some other GUI plugins (here (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/technetmag/issues/2007/06/utilityspotlight/default.aspx)), but of course they're not part of a default install, so when I come to type away in my VM's I have to stop and get something elevated rather than just point and squirt.

Ah yes, see what you mean. Yes, that does happen to me as well but as I'm not fiddling with networks much that's not a huge issue. I get that more often trying to run chkdsk.

My Ten cents.

I used Vista at work for 3 months & sort out systems that are on Vista.
Visually i love it, it's good looking & has a familiar feel to it. The thing i don't like is how it slows a system down compared to XP. Basically it needs more ram & most systems haven't got it. 1 meg is not enough for Vista imho. Get it on 2 meg & with a few tweaks it flys along.
I think the biggest problem though is the catch up from other Company's & informed users. It is much easier to get info/tweaks/mods/Drivers etc for XP ran systems than it is Vista. This has nothing to do with Vista but is an issue.
My Boss did lose a load of files for No apparent reason as well but this was probably down to Dodgey usage rather than Bugz.
Give it another year, sp1 + sp2 for Vista & many more users & i will switch but for now i am staying on XP. Most reasons are down to just ease of use which has more to do with Me than it does with how Vista runs. I like how my system runs & how much i know about my XP on my system. The thought of switching OS & learning all the tweaks & cut downs does my head in
S'pose I'll have to do it sooner or later though :(

I'm not up for doing it now either. Right now most of my programs work, all my tweaks are up, my custom visual style is one I've had for some five years now and I'm not ready to change - and I don't think Vista will like it :p

I will change when it becomes absolutely necessary, or if I buy a new PC at some point down the line which already has it.

Politely snipped.

Now why can't i write what i mean in a few lines instead of my convoluted (trys big word ;) ) way :(

Where is that setting Davey?

Does anyone also know how to change the default booting OS (dual boot).. My main rig still uses XP mainly but I've loaded Vista for Bioshock.. I'd like it to default it to XP on startup rather than vista.. ?

I use the bcdedit cli program, but apparently it can be done in the GUI:

1. Right-Click on My Computer and select properties
- (In Vista you can select View System Information from the Computer window.)
2. From the System Properties window select the Advanced tab
3. Push the Settings button under Startup and Recovery
4. Select the default OS from the Default operating system dropdown box.
5. Click OK twice.

He didn't manage it though & at one point i killed 5 of them in one go even stabbing one of them & having time to T-Bag the mofo

I think I'm trying to get Vista to do too much. I have a dual core CPU, and if I want it to do two intensive things, it's fine.

Give it three and it judders to a grinding halt. :(
