View Full Version : HL2: ep 2
Maybe I have been out of the loop, but ep 2 seems to be coming out on the 10th. Now you seem to have to buy the orange box which includes HL 2, ep1, tf2, portal which works out at £25 ish.
I can't seem to see a version where you just buy ep2, portal, tf2. I already have the other games so I can't see why I should buy them again.
Really looking forward to this one, simply because its a FPS with a story! That and my machine still eats the source engine alive.

I haven't read this month PC Gamer but isn't the orange box for Retail?? Surely Steam would see that you have HL2 and Episode 1???
Valve say that you're only actually paying for EP II, Portal and TF 2 and that the other stuff is an added free bonus but that sounds like BS to me. Apparently you will be able to buy EP II seperately but it'll only be available after the release date, ie, no pre-load.
http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=search&genre=&=&term=orange+box shows a price of $29.95.
Episode 2 looks to be available on its own (oddly for the same price as the orange box). It doesn't say specifically but I'm pretty sure it comes with Portal and TF2.

What's the difference between HL2 and HL2 Ep1?
This is one of the few games I actually loved (HL) so I will be getting this - though I need a new gfx card :(
Ep1 is the next step on from HL2. It's the same game engine and what not but the story has moved on - it starts where HL2 finished.
It's good, quite short though. A bit too short for my liking.

Ep1 is an add-on for HL2 :)
EDIT: Dang it, not fast enough
Is that "Lost coast"? Or is it something completely different altogether?
Will, HL2 is a damn good game, its looking a tad dated now. Its carrying on the story of HL now that Gordon Freeman accepted the offer from the G-man. Suddenly you start in city 17 (George Orwell 1984 style) and it all kicks off from there.
Hl -> Hl2 -> hl2 ep 1 -> hl2 ep 2.
What gfx card have you got Will, you could be surprised as it has very low requirements

That's something else, basically a showcase for HDR.

Lost coast was a tech demo from Valve to show off HDR - which is basically just a white wash of your screen.

I'm up to speed now. I've got HL1, HL2 + Lost coast, I couldn't see ep1 on my steam account - I'll have to have a look. Lost coast looked beautiful!
I like to have the details and gfx on full whack though, so unless I can I don't bother with the game ;) It's an old ATI x800 pro 256mb PCIE card I think - I'm not at home so can't remember exactly.
Lost Coast was a freebie, you've got to buy EP1 so it won't show up in your Steam account until you've bought it
Worth getting? I'm tempted to get myself a cheapy £70 gfx card like a 8600 or something along those lines as if hl2 is continuing (and portals looks cool too) I'd be tempted.
There's a few games I'm playing at the moment which suck on my pc - I've now got time to play them which is cool

I never got past the scaffolding.. got bored with it.
Lost coast was a tech demo, that was all it was ever meant to be really. They do need to put some serious effort into the engine as it is looking old tech. Granted after the custom res packs that the community has put together it looks cracking
Worth getting?
You can get it for $9.95 so yeah, it's worth it.
The best way to think of it is that Ep 1+2+3 = Half-life 3. Hopefully this one will be a little longer than the last though (with more Dog as well!).

I've not even finished Ep1. :lipsrsealed: Why did I leave HL2 and Ep1 at home!
Install steam and download it again wherever you are now?

I can do that?! I wouldn't have to buy them again? I got them via CD though. Does that mean I can only install them from the CD or can I get them from Steam?
Games you've bought are registered against your Steam account. Get downloading!
Steam's such a good system.
Back to the original question ;) ... if you purchase the Orange Box but already have HL2 and Ep1 you can choose to give these to somebody else as a gift.
You can't not buy them as part of the box, but at least they're not wasted.
Also, getting Ep2, TF2, and Portal looks like a pretty good deal to me.
And on the subject of Ep1, it's definitely worth it - it's excellent. Better than HL2, even though it is so short.

I still want Portal, but I'm undecided as to PC or Xbox. I guess I'll go Xbox so I've got all the other games on there as well.

I think you'll find there are still quite a few of us "heathens" around, young man :p
I'm getting both! Love the accuracy of mouse and keyboard for Half life, but multiplayer on 360 will be awesome (plus achievements = bonus). This will almost certainly be the game that forces me to finally buy a Gold subscription!

You still haven't got one
He's done well tbh!
And yar, 360 ftw, multiplayer's a better experience on Live imo.
I prefer the game play and graphics of a PC still... but yeah I can imagine the multiplay that the xbox has can be amazing. If only you could plug a mouse and keyboard into it it'd sell me straight away! I'm so cack handed at using controllers.
I can't get on with game controllers for this type of game so it'll be PC only for me.
Good man! I need to pop round and have a bit of a LAN session with you ;)
Just a LAN session? ;)
You know exactly what I mean baby!! ;) :x
