View Full Version : Time to buy a PS3?

The price of the PS3 drops today, along with the release of a new (but crappier) model.
The new entry level version retails at £299, but is missing 2 USB ports, PS2 compatibility and the card readers.
The premium version is now £350 and has all the extras plus two games.
The hard drives in both machines are a bit puny though, but the PS3 can take any 2.5 ATA drive so it's pretty good for upgrading.
£350 is a price i'd pay.... if there were 2 games that i wanted. as it stands heavenly sword is the only thing that's interested me. RFoM plays alright but it's not something i'd give my own money for.

Bartering might get some stores to change at least one of the games, however I'm a fan of RFoM so the choice of games you get with the premium pack isn't a problem for me.
Plus it's a cheap way of getting your hands on a Blu-Ray player.
Which bit of the PS2 compatibility did they remove? I thought they'd already done that tbh.
I am, however, going to put my head in a bucket and ignore this completely. :)

The EU version of the PS3 had a PS2 software emulator built in, the rest of the world had the Emotion Engine on chip in their PS3s. The software version is a failure so they've just removed it.
The US version of the PS3 has the Emotion Engine removed from newer models, but has the soft emulator as a replacement.

The games for the PS3 seems to be a little more expensive in the shops but a little cheaper secondhand in places like Gamestation.
For me there were only three reasons to get a PS2 which kind of map to the PS3 and they were FF and GT, the third reason was you could pick up game cheap secondhand.
I might invest but not for another year.

When enough games come out for the PS3 that I want (and are exclusive) then I'll seriously consider it, but not until then. Looking ahead there simply aren't enough exclusive PS3 games that I'm interested in (beyond MGS4) whereas there are lots on the 360.
I'll definitely get one at some point, but not for a while yet.

Amazon are pretty good, as they sell most PS3 games for £29.99, still places like GAME sell PS3 games for £45 - 50 which is way too much.

Agreed. There's also that slim chance that 6 months down the line MGS4 might be announced for the 360.
Never say never, but I can't see it for the forseeable future.

Going by past MGS games, it’s more likely a MGS4: Substance game will be released on the PS3 and Xbox360 a year to 18 months after the PS3 original.
If you dont already own a 360 or PS3, then it's getting there for sure. Saw on HotUKDeals the other day you can buy the new basic PS3 (killing the BC is a stupid move imo fwiw) with Fifa 08 I think for £299. Of course if Blueray is important to you then decision made, but purely for gaming? Dunno really. The Xbox has the games catalogue at the moment, and arguably the better online service - but that service comes at a cost, and the games stack for PS3 will only go up, and they're doing good things with PS3/PSP interoperability.
I'd still argue it's a little too soon I think. Next price drop after christmas, hopefully when Home is out, would be a good time to do it I think. Of course, already owning a 360 I cant see myself switching, but for those yet to take the plunge I'd say either wait or buy a 360 Elite.
I'm looking at one of the consoles for use over xmas. The PS3 looked good with resistance when I saw that being demo'd. The main issue is the lack of good games on it. Granted there are a few, but nothing compared to the xbox 360. The release of the console wasn't a surprise to the developers, simply where are the games?
I'm looking at the xbox 360 elite but the ps3 has until xmas to tell me otherwise. Another reason is everyone on here has xbox 360's
RE: Backwards compatabilty, this (http://www.rewiredmind.com/opinionated/ps3-minus-ps2-is-it-really-that-bad/) just popped up in my RSS reader, and the guy has a point I guess.

The only titles on the Xbox360 that have caught my eye are Dead Rising and Beautiful Katamari, whilst Halo is a good game it is terribly over-rated.
Sony will be getting my money at some point with the PS3.

I would always go for an Xbox360 first purely through the strength not only of its exclusives, but also the strength of its ported games.
Beautiful Katamari,
The Squid cooking simulator?

fanbois are lol.
What it all comes down to is good games, the only other game I would want on the Xbox is GTA4 and although the head of Rockstar Sam Hauser has said that the Xbox is getting exclusive content for it - but you've got to remember that Sam Hauser is full of **** when it comes to exclusive rights (see the GTA stories games.)
Wii is disappointing due to it's lack of games, mines gathering dust - the xbox has no games that interest me bar Dead Rising. That only leaves the PS3 which has some interesting games.

Indeed ;)

"but I don't see what the PS3 currently has that isn't bettered on the Xbox 360."
Is a fanboi statement. You made it with nothing to back it up.
I would've bought an Xbox Elite at one point, but because instead fixing the problems that the Xbox has due to its p1ss poor engineering and just slapping a black case on it to cover up its taint, Microsoft didn't get my cash.
And it is p1ss poor engineered, you don't piggy back several heat intensive components without proper heat dissipation and then don't expect it to burn itself out. The idea of the Xbox is good, it's badly executed though.
Making friends again I see.

The internet isn't for friends; it's for Hæt, Lulz and Ebay scams.
I would say go with a 360... I have played Fable 2... thats just worth it!
Stelly
I don't really care how the xbox is engineered. It could have a carrot in there for all I care as long as it continues to run games I enjoy. The PS3 lacks games I want. A lot have become 360 exclusives like Ace Combat, Devil May Cry and so on.

Slightly wrong is something along the lines of a minor spelling mistake, to lie about something is abject failure (insert smiley).
Well I'll go sit in the abject failure tent with the PS3. Keep the old chap company.

You want me to explain myself? Fine, I'll happily do so.
Here in my opinion are the best games on the PS3 to date.....
Ninja Gaiden Sigma (Action)
Oblivion (RPG)
Motorstorm (Driving)
Resistance (Shooter)
Heavenly Sword (Action)
Out of those games, there's nothing there that isn't matched or bettered by the 360. Ninja Gaiden Sigma is simply a remake of Ninja Gaiden Black with a few tweaks and extra levels (none of which have actually helped according to the reviews I've read). Oblivion is available on the 360 and done just as well. Motorstorm is beaten by Project Gotham 3 and Forza Motorsport 2 (though they're different types of racing games so I'll admit opinions will vary on which is better). Resistance is beaten by a number of Xbox 360 shooters, with Gears of War and Bioshock both at the top of the list (and Xbox 360 exclusive I might add). Heavenly Sword is also beaten by several action games, with Ninja Gaiden being the most obvious one (and that's a generation old).
Obviously everyone has opinions and I'm fine with yours being different from mine. Out of everyone in this thread though, only one person has sounded like a fanboy, and this post is directed straight at him ;)

I had my heart set on a PS3 for a long time because I wanted RE:5. However after seeing Gears of War I jumped ship to the 360 and haven't looked back. Thankfully RE:5 will be on the 360 too which is great.
The fact I was set on a PS3 and ended up buying a 360 should show I'm not a fanboi. I can honestly say there is nothing that would persuade me to buy a PS3. I'm happy to say I've had my 360 approaching 12 months now and it cost me alot less then a PS3 and I get to play with all my friends on great games such as GoW and COD4 :)

I think the fact I currently own a PS2, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and Sony PSP should show I'm not a fanboy. The mere suggestion I am is laughable in the extreme. I buy consoles when I have a reason to, and that reason is simply that there are enough games on it to warrant a purchase. And to put it bluntly, there's nothing on the PS3 currently that's worth my time and money. That will likely change in the future, so I'll end up with a PS3 when there's enough reasons to own one.

Heheh, IMO, definitely no reason to buy one just yet. With the 360 being more mature, having more games available (and better ones IMO), the arcade games, Xbox Live, and a thriving community, I don't see a reason to step away from it yet.
As I said though, each to their own :)

Well I was going to make a thread about buying a console and which one as I dont own any at the moment :o
But reading this thread and a few of the X360 threads has made my mind up I think.
However the PS3 having Blu-Ray is making me think twice..
I havent really kept up to date with media stuff *don't hurt me*, is this going to take off and be as widespread as DVDs? or is it going to be the Minidisk of the film world?
Davey_Pitch
13-10-2007, 22:00
From what I've read Blu-Ray is currently more popular than the HD-DVD stuff, but it's so early in the war it's impossible to say which one will eventually come out on top. It'll take a fairly long time before they become as popular (or as cheap) as DVD's so there's no pressing need to get a Blu-Ray player just yet IMO.

The thing I like about the 360 over the PS3 is if Blue Ray is the one to take off and become the household HD player then as far as I'm aware there's nothing to stop Microsoft bringing out a blue ray player for the 360..... is there?

I don't see why not. I don't think Sony bought any exclusive rights when they licensed the Blu-Ray player, so it *should* be open for MS if there's a need for it.
I'll be getting a PS3 when Final Fantasy XIII is released, but until then I'll be trying my damnedest to avoid the thing (which isn't hard, since Heavenly Sword is the only game I've seen that even remotely interests me) since I'd very much like Sony to lose large amounts of money on it after the way they've been screwing over their customers lately.

Correct. Indeed, Microsoft have said as much (http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/7208.cfm) :)
Final Fantasy XIII is the one game that may sway me to a PS3 but not for a good while yet as it seems a bit pricey for the games on offer. There's just not enough that stands out for me yet.

After a huge amount of peer pressure one of my mates finally buckled over the weekend and bought one. The silly boy got it slightly wrong and bought a PS3 rather than a 360. It managed 20 minutes before dying. We certainly didn't laugh at him ;D
I popped into my old house on Sunday and found a cheque for £85 from MS. 360ftw

To be fair that's not the norm. From what I read the reliability of the PS3 has so far been very good, much better than the 360, though it's relatively early days for it.

Had a PS3 over the weekend on loan froma mate trying to convert me.
As my launchday 360 is sat in it's box in the cupboard I thought it may be worth a look.
WRONG!
Finish is tacky, size is too big, many of the games are simply dreadful *although the same could be said about the 360 - but there are many more great games on the 360* Controller is still uncomfortable and is also far too light - but that may be solved by the reintroduction of rumble
It's just not impressive at all. Other than in size.
Bluray is alright - but as Sony is effectively in charge of it - I don't hold out much hope for the format. They've already changed the specification once since release - rendering some players useless - and the new protection causes some players to reject disks... Nicely done.
HD-DVD - none of those issues. Got the 360's HD-DVD drive sat inside my PC nicely - currently playing Batman Begins in 1920x1080 on a 24" CRT :D
Buy a Wii instead. ;) Much more fun. Get in quick though, there's going to be another shortage this christmas.
Xbox 360, Xbox, Nintendo Wii, Gamecube, Nintendo DS Lite, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Colour, Gameboy, SNES, NES, Megadrive, SegaCD, 32X, Master system, Playstation and Playstation 2 owner....
The Wii is the only one set up at the moment.

Why crap?
The only thing it's missing of any note is the PS2 backwards compatibility and to be honest, if there was anything that good you really wanted on PS2 you'd have bought one and played it already surely?
If it really bothers you, new pstwos are only £50 or so now anyway...
(the only other differences being lack of SACD support, 2 less USB ports and no flash card reader)
I can think of a very good reason for wanting backwards compatibility and that's to remove the PS2 that's currently plugged into the telly.
I keep getting tempted to buy a PS3, but then realise that 99% of the games I would play are out on the 360 so would be a waste of money really. Shame, as I'd really like to try one out and see what it's like.

I don't remember anyone i knew doing any more than going 'ooooh look my ps1 games work still' with their PS2 before subsequently being too busy playing new games.

they chopped out all those extras that'd actually got me to like it in the first place... built in wifi, plenty of usbs, card readery thing... and then they removed the compatibility... it would of been nice to just pick up a cheap copy of MGS or something.
oh well... maybe i'll pick up one of theose new slimmer ps2s whenever they turn up.
It has inbuilt WiFi, only the 20GB didn't have that which was sold for about a month in the US and was NTSC only anyway.
USB went from 4 to 2, hardly the end of the world, not a great deal uses them.
Card reader, not entirely sure what you'd use that for that couldn't be done with a USB drive.
As for the new slim PS2, it's the same size as the current Slim PS2 that sells for £50 but with a built in PSU.
i see - not that bad then... well better than i had been led to believe.
might have to go have a gander over the game selection.
oh, btw, any news on when this new ps2 will be available here?
No idea, last I heard was 'early 2008' for a general release. I wouldn't be too worried though, it's barely any different to the one already out, the only difference is the lack of the PSU being in the power cable. Depends if not having that would be worth waiting and probably paying more for.

I would. I still love my PS2 games and although I don't play them much, I do like the option of playing them whenever I want. I wouldn't have that if I had to reconnect the PS2 every time I wanted to play something.

Point of interest though - Sony were hiring for what seemed like position to code a software emulator, so maybe it'll get backwards compat through software sometime in the future via an update :dunno:

I bought a PS3 a month or so ago to use as a Blu-ray player for our plasma screen. The fact that it plays games as well is a bonus. :)
IMO as a Blu-ray player it excels and having played through Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Motorstorm it's not doing too badly as a games console either.
It's lucky it does excel at being a BD player because all the other BD players out at the moment are crap and hugely more expensive :p
