View Full Version : How long should a modern exhaust last?
Simple question. You get a brand spanking new car, what sort of life should you get out of the exhaust?

Mines done 35k, I expect it to explode at any moment

We had ours replaced at around 68,000 to 70,000 miles. Not sure if it was done before that, it's the only one I remember. Strangley, not too long after I started using it.

Depends very much on the car and how you drive it i would expect. I'm still on the original at 45k.
Focus diesel, overclocked and driven hard.

Still original after 5 1/2 years and 46k
Was a stainless one to start with though. :D
Dads Lotus is still on it's original one at 101k and 19 years - again, stainless.

I've been through 2 in 3 years and 70k miles. Bloody thing nearly wore through my brake cables the last time it went (about a month ago). A Nice Mr Car Man took the offending dangly bit off for me.

MINI has a Works SS system, that won't need replacing in a hurry :)

BMW one on 100k today and still going strong
Mates saxo exhaust rusted through and fell off. Its 03 plate and on 35k miles
70k miles and 4 years and the exhaust on my overclocked car shows no signs of falling off.
I would hope a few years. However I got my focus and blew the back box within a few months. Got a new exhaust Jan/Feb and I think thats starting to go :/ Although driving it damn hard (only when hot though) probably doesn't help.
So an original exhaust that's still going strong at nearly six years and over 180,000 isn't bad then?

So long as it doesn't do it on the way to Wales in just TWO WEEKS time!
Ford exhaust anyway feek, cheap to replace. I think I have gone through 2 in 166k. One rusted to bits, one I was just unlucky and a particularly spirited drive over an especially vicious speedbump and clouted it one.

The longest I have owned a car before encountering exhaust problems is 3 weeks (all second hand, of course).
First thing I do if I buy a second hand car is check that the local exhaust place has a full range of parts for the exhaust.

It's still going strong, over 7 years old now and done around 215,000 miles.
Of course, posting the thread originally was a risk. Reviving it after all this time is guaranteeing it's going to go pop.
3-5 years is fairly average. All depends on the car and the zorst quality in the first place. SS cat back with lifetime guarantee does me fine...... wonder how long the cat section will last? Will it be an excuse to buy a decat??! ;)
The original one on my missus' BMW lasted 10 years and 120,000 miles
I have run several cars to 100k miles from new and never had an exhaust on any of them
Now you tell us. Could have mentioned that before I got in your old Scoob. :p
and never had an exhaust on any of them
Quoted for denial of ninja editing. :p
Mine's done 127k (9 yrs old) on the original exhaust, but I can hear the cat tinkling like it did just before it went on the Mondeo, so I'm absolutely sure it's about to go. I think the Mondeo went at about 160k (11 yrs old), and again that was the cat.

I was still on the original after 10 years it went just after christmas. Quite impressive really.

as if I would do such a thing ;)
It's not the original, but theexhaust on my Dad's Minor Traveler was put on when the car was 3. It's now 33
The exhaust on Lulu is the ten year old original, but it's only done 31k. There's a loose baffle and a small rust hole, so it won't last all that much longer I guess.
I am fairly sure the exhaust on my 1993 BMW 525i Sport was the original item, 16 years and 253,000 miles later :)
WTF? How did I end up in this thread 2 years after it died? Most odd...

I don't know if you've got that car any more Feek but it's definitely doomed now :D
I hope not, it's done 268,000 now. It would be a shame to have to replace it, it's like an old friend.
Twelve years, I reached 340,000 miles yesterday - Same exhaust.
