watched this last night and it's bloody brilliant - had us in stitches! I love the way he talks about drugs and his sex addiction. very eloquent, observant and scathing. Definitely a recommended watch :)

I know Dym likes him, but I think he's a ****, can't stand the guy.

Russell Brand, not Dym ;)

hehe, no doubt - he is a **** but that's part of what I find funny about him! Russell Brand, not Dym ;)

I cannot stand RB at all.

I'm going to jump on the he is probably the least funny person every bandwagon. I just think he has become famous with no real talent at all. Making rude comments and noises and playing up is not funny.

have you even seen his standup? Do you like Lee Evans/Billy Connolly/Ross Noble/any other mainstream comedians? They all make rude comments/noises and play up! Sounds to me like you don't like standup.

How about, after this post - if you haven't seen him but don't like him, reserve judgement until you have. I didn't like him before the standup, but he actually turned out being very good.

I like him because he's extremely silly and makes up words.

I'm the same; thought he was a grade A moron at first but his standup is actually pretty good. The media have given him a bad rap, and if you can get over his brashness and his propensity for being overly-verbose, he comes across as generally a nice chap.

Edit: Haha! Just realised that last bit is a bit hypocritical! 'He's a nice guy, but has a propensity for being overly verbose...'

As a tv presenter he was rubbish, pointless and irritating. I now find some of his stand up quite funny.

I don't like 'him' (from what i've heard of him)
I don't find him funny on tv (presenting, or on panel games etc)

but his stand up is hilarious!
like Jasper said, it had us both in pieces, and we'd had a pretty crappy day (with Jaypeg being ill and whatnot)
so he must do something right!

I'm going by what i have seen of him on tv presenting and on the radio.
I love stand up, I'm going to see Bill Bailey in November and I'm really looking forward to it. Have also seen Ross Noble's stand up and Billy Connolly. In fact i used to go out with a stand up comedian, so spent far too much time watching a lot of professionals and novices, i know what i find funny.
I just think Russel Brand is a moron and don't find him funny, i am allowed to think this.

I was talking about the standup, as stated in the OP. Also, Bill Bailey's jokes are based solely around making funny noises and being stupid. Same with Ross Noble.

No one said you weren't allowed to think what you think, but your justification makes no sense whatsoever. Don't see what having been out with a comedian has to do with it.

Feek
24-10-2007, 21:16
The justification is personal taste. I can't stand Brand, and I've seen his stand-up. I think Billy Connolly is hilarious though.

Exactly, i think Brand is a love him or hate him character. Bailey i find more likable. :)

Jasper

The justification is personal taste.

yes, I agree. It's the ultimate justification when talking about all art forms - that's kinda stating the obvious. The point I was making was that wasn't Blackstar's justification, not even by a long shot, which was why I was confused. "I don't like him" is always perfectly viable, and I would never enter a debate over that - if you read over her post again, you'll see why I did. 'No real talent' (statement of fact, not a matter of opinion), 'funny noises' (what Bill Bailey is pretty much famous for), 'rude comments' (what Billy Connolly is famous for).

but your original post said

Making rude comments and noises and playing up is not funny.

which is what all of your preferred comedians do...
Bill Bailey (who i have seen live) is all about the 'silly noises', Ross Nobel (who i have also seen live) makes his money from playing up, making a big deal out of his appearance, and his accent (as does Brand) - and Billy Connelly, does he go 3 minutes without making a rude or obscene joke?

comedy isn't about what is 'likeable' - it about what individuals find funny - you don't like him, fair enough.
there are people who have become far more famous, for doing far less - if you're going to hold anything against him, it shouldn't be that!! :P

Ok i don't like him. Happy? ffs in my opinion it is Brand's way of doing such things (silly noises etc) that i don't like, i don;t find him funny as i have said i have spent a lot of time around comedians and i know what i find funny. Thus personal taste.
As for likable, i find both Bill Bailey and Ross Noble funny but i find BB more likable so would see him in preference. Again i find this important, obviously you disagree.

not really, because instead of staying coherent and actually saying what you mean calmly, you've resorted to confusion, swearing and frustration and only just half got what I was trying to say.

Jesus christ, just because someone doesn't agree with you or maybe is putting things across the way that doesn't make sense to you there is no need to rip that person to pieces as I have seen happen above.

I find it very distasteful.

I'm certainly not confused and am actually very insulted at what i see as a very personal attack.I was however disappointed and rather pissed off at being ripped apart for having an opinion. I have noticed this from you, if someone doesn't agree with you.
All this because i thought to put more than just that i didn't like him and that it was his personal take of the classic comedy (which you so eloquently pointed out i do enjoy,) that makes me dislike him. True i possibly didn't portray my side of the argument well but there was no need for that kind of behaviour.

OK, we've all got this off our chests now hopefully :)

I can see why both sides might have been a bit miffed, but let's chat nice again now, please.

As for Russell Brand. I was cracking up at him on TV the other night when he did his technology show thing (whatever it was called). He's a bit will and over the top (which I'd normally dislike) but there's just something I find funny about him, can't quite put my finger on it.

Jasper

didn't think I was ripping you apart - just the 2 things you said directly contradicted each other and it confused me. I am so very sorry for not understanding. I prostrate myself before you, and beg your forgiveness
I have noticed this from you, if someone doesn't agree with you.
what you may have noticed is that it's a pet hate of mine when people say 2 things that directly contradict each other - if you're insecure enough about what you've said to see it as being ripped apart, this is a fault with you.
All this because i thought to put more than just that i didn't like him and that it was his personal take of the classic comedy (which you so eloquently pointed out i do enjoy,) that makes me dislike him.
see, that makes sense! if you'd have said that in the first place, there wouldn't have been this confusion.
True i possibly didn't portray my side of the argument well but there was no need for that kind of behaviour.
I find it weird that you consider this to even be an argument. All I've been trying to do is get on the same page as you. I can't remember whether you said you've actually seen his standup, but that was the point of this thread. I didn't used to like him before I saw his standup and now I think he's pretty damn funny. From my point of view, it's the people who've come in without having seen it to pass judgement, just to say it's **** whilst I'm trying to recommend some standup comedy that I enjoyed, that have been out of order. well, **** it. If I see anything I enjoy in the future, you can be damn sure that I'm not even going to bother trying to recommend it to you lot, because it'll make no difference, obviously.

Just to add further to this, whilst we never try to dictate what can or can't be said here, I would like to think we can ALL cut each other some slack at times. Maybe Paula was in a bad mood at the time and took Jasper's comments too personally, maybe Jasper was too quick to dive in and pick up on things too literally. I don't know.

All I'm saying is that if a discussion starts to go wayward, let's try and keep things pleasant. There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with each other, but we can still do it nicely.

Cheers :)

What a ****

Desmo that is not Brand :p

I feel very indifferent to RB - but tbh there aren't many people on TV that grab my attention.
