View Full Version : Happy Hallowe'en
Happy Hallowe'en everyone :) And Samhain to those who care!
Pumpkin done.
Hoards of sweets in bowls ready for the masses of children dressed up tonight hehehe. And we'll just scoff the rest.
Woo! may everything in your day be orange and black :D
I'm off to the pumpkin patch to wait for The Great Pumpkin to rise out of it. :D
Happy Hallowe'en/Samhain :)
Considering the types of "kids" around my way, I think we'll just be ignoring the doorbell tonight - I really would love to visit the states over the Hallowe'en period at some point - looks like good fun :)

The term "Happy" doesn't really seem to fit with Halloween??!?
We had a kids party on Saturday night.. I've just about got over it and I'm now out of the bandages following Feek's bundle antics lol :D.
I made a pumpkin head too and didn't injure myself :p
I'll have you know, old fruit that I was braced fully on my knees and elbows with hardly any pressure on you, absorbing the kids that leaped on top of me and stopping the bundlage from seeping through :)
Of course, you still got the effect of any who bundled onto your head!
Children? Tonight? *munch* ;D
Sometimes get one or two, but I'm undecided as to whether to go out and get some sweets this lunchtime, or to just hide. :)

Hallowe'en:
Modern meaning
Literally, of course, it is the eve of All Hallows - a preparation for the observance tomorrow of the Feast of All Hallows or All Saints. That feast gives the assurance that there is a state of being that stretches beyond our life here on this earth - an affirmation of the essential spiritual nature of human life. People are made for more than can be experienced over our lifetime spent in this world.
So this Christian season brings us a comforting reminder that there is a destiny designed for us humans that assures us of a continuing existence, and it's a promise endorsed by Jesus when he spoke of the many mansions that he has prepared for us. [Hallowe'en assures] us that God's love stretches far beyond death.
Samhain:
To most modern Pagans, while death is still the central theme of the festival this does not mean it is a morbid event. For Pagans, death is not a thing to be feared. Old age is valued for its wisdom and dying is accepted as a part of life as necessary and welcome as birth.
While Pagans, like people of other faiths, always honour and show respect for their dead, this is particularly marked at Samhain. Loved ones who have recently died are remembered and their spirits often invited to join the living in the celebratory feast.
It is also a time at which those born during the past year are formally welcomed into the community.

Cute logo :)
Great, will be spending most of the night getting egg off the house :( I hate Hallowe'en now thanks to the chavs who think it's funny to throw eggs at our house because my mum was a teacher.
I COULDNT FIND ANY PUMPKINS :'( :'(
I feel nekkid :'(
Though... oodles of sweeties for the kiddies! Wanna jump out at them too tonight (Picky can answer the door and I'll jump out from the side of the house!) Though will have to be careful not to jump out on too chavvish children incase they decide to egg our house (and careful of the ickle ones - wouldn't wanna scare them too much!)
Teeeeeeehehehehhehehe! Canny wait! :D
Sod answering the ******* door. I've got too much work to do and had enough of kids today. My year 8 group now hold the title for my "worst lesson ever" - including my training lessons.
Daz is convinced we will get kids coming round, although our house is not on any map yet and we dont have any street lighting, so good luck to anyone that finds us ;D
I wont be answering the door, Ive had a crap day and will be in the bath with some wine :)

Thats our admin office... they like dressing up, but most of the ones wearing hats and stuff had gone home when I took the pic :(
Hopefully no one will ring my doorbell... I only have out of date Taxi and Gold bars as offerings.

Samhain?!
I don't know anything about haloween except children dressing up and begging for food and egging houses and carving of pumpkins... I've never celebrated it as I don't really know what it's about - I thought it was an American thing? I didn't realise it was such a big deal! :o Though I haven't seen any banners or things talking about it. It's not linked to Bonfire night is it...?
Nah Will it's a Pagan thing :)
Just had two delightful little darlings, one a pumpkin and one a skelenton. Nawrr.

Doubt she's going to like it for the next fortnight if the prevelance of fireworks near you is anything like here :/
In regards to door answering (I missed this earlier) Jarp has unwittingly volunteered for it after pointing out that the bucket of sweets from the cottage is still sat in our hall :p

I like halloween, but it's lots it's magic for me. We used to have halloween parties in the garage, have it all done up. We'd trick or treat and then come back and play games like bobbing for apples, etc. :D
We've had a few kiddies tonight but not as many as we used to. Never had problems here of eggs, but there's time!

Had one lot so far today.
Twice. 5 minutes apart, cheeky blighters ;D
had loads, turned the lights off at 7 and haven't heard a peep since.
Mum rang me to say she was hiding in a bush and jumping out at them when they went up the garden path. Crazy woman!!!
OooooOO.......
'Twas a long time ago, longer now than it seems in a place perhaps you've seen in your dreams. For the story you're about to be told began with the holiday worlds of auld. Now you've probably wondered where holidays come from. If you haven't I'd say it's time you begun.
... I wonder what I will be watching tonight :D

Had it's first watch of the year from me on Friday night :D Happy Halloween people :)
Considering we have no TV then it's certainly an option to watch this :D
Didn't hear a peep from anyone, save the delivery man, who asked neither trick nor treat. Having the lights out in rooms I'm not using probably contributed, but I can claim that's in the name of being green and nothing to do with hiding from tykes. ;D
Treats go back in the fridge for me then. I'll be good and not have them all at once. :)
Crazy woman!!!
Runs in the family then? :p

Well that has been a fairly uneventful Halloween, I'm back already because all I did was go round to a friends, have a take-away and some beer to watch a film. Haven't really seen hide nor hair of trick or treaters which is probably just as well since I had no sweeties to give them.
Happy Halloween to everyone though. :)
Really don't like Hallowe'en and have never really celebrated it either. It's completely spoilt by chavs chucking eggs/flour all over the place and knocking on doors intimidating people. I taped up the letter box to stop any eggs being pushed through. Had my car egged last year and it took ages to get off, so I really hope nothing's happened to the Silvia. Was at the gym last night, but Leon said some chavs hammered hell out of our door before saying "No-one in", in a gruff voice and going. The lights were off until 9ish though, so that's all we had.
I wouldn't mind if it was sweet little kids coming round with their parents. I'd even bake some biscuits or something. But it's not, so the door stays shut and the lights stay off.
/rant :p
Agree with you Kate - but I didn't realise there was an actual Pagan celebration of it. To me it's all a bit of a waste of time, but for kids I can imagine it being quite fun, but not in this world we live in these days. I chased down 3 people last year who egged our front door because we didn't have any sweets (wtf would we buy some?!) besides they were at least 17 - I'm not proud to say that I did catch up to one of them and did give him a heck of a fright, they never came back.
To me all these traditions are spoilt by greed, commercialism and material values. I know we should make the effort to ensure that it doesn't get worse but some people take a whole yard if you give 'em just an inch. A lot of these things have lost their magic for me - which is why I'd rather spend it with friends and family and not bother doing public communal things.
Awwwww MAN! I love halloween... but then we don't really have chavs knocking on our door.
I am well sad. Only two wee girlies - who looked SUPERB - turned up last night :( This means we have bags of sweeties and milkybar buttons (thank you belmit!) left.
*sigh*
Looks like we'll just have to eat them all up ourselves.
;)
When I was younger we'd have halloween parties and the neighbours would come round and there'd be toffee apples and apple dunking and dressing up and the "scarey room" and silly games, red-dyed cakes with goo in the middle and and and we'd have all the lights changed so they had green and red bulbs on them and and and we'd pumpkin carve and have competitions and...
Ooooh it was FUN!
Isn't halloween supposed to be the celebration of the end of the summery/warmish seasons and the start of winter? Something that the celtics or someone did?
/me googles..
Here looky! Halloween history! (http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/Halloween/history.htm)
:D Hope everyone had fun and no problems from chavs!
There isn't a Pagan celebration 'of' Hallowe'en, as usual we were there first, celebrating Samhain as the end of Summer and the start of Winter. When other religions tried to stamp us out they renamed most of the festivals but kept them around the same time, fortunately.
I know a few people who had bad experiences last night and it makes them think negatively of it. I had a great night and today is the start of a new year :p
Happy new year :D

Hey, they're on me!
Love the Big Daddy/Little Sister costumes!
We got lucky last night and just had the little kids with their parents trick or treating. Had to answer to the door at one point and saw 3 really cute little kids so gave them a couple of sweets each.
I'm sure I read that in the US, registered paedophiles had to make themselves known during hallowe'en, if so, why the hell doesn't that happen here as there is one living in my my street, but I doubt many people actually know :(
I'd hope that if they are kids their parents would go out with them, or at least be nearby. Things were different when we were young, but these days the sweet innocence is disappearing. :(

in Liverpool there is a lantern walk in Sefton Park, I keep meaning to go and my friend takes her niece but I always forget about it. :(
Leaflet about it from last year (http://www.liverpoollanterncompany.co.uk/media/LiverpoolLanternCo2006.pdf)
