Thats right! Shock Radio, the University of Salford Students' Union radio station is back on air from 10pm tomorrow night throughout November on 87.7FM in the Manchester area and online at www.shockradio.co.uk

I declined to have a show this year as I couldnt think up something I would be happy presenting that was suitably different from everyone else, but I will still be popping up on other people's shows. I have one confirmed guest appearance on a drivetime show in a couple of weeks :)

In other news, I am pretty much responsible for the technical side of things, so technically just by listening in you are able to hear my work 24/7, which is pretty cool.

Im pretty excited about tomorrow! :D

Martin

I've sent myself a reminder mail to home - Do you have the direct 'listen' feed URL so I can plug it into my radio player gadget?

... and listening. Couple of rebuffer sessions when I first connected but it seems solid now.

Mark

Seems solid enough. Will listen to the launch before retiring. :)

Mark

Silence is golden... :p

I assume that's just launch preparation and not the whole lot going **** up. :)

Still playing test transmission music.

Mark
02-11-2007, 23:40
Nope - it went live at 22:00:21 here (I have a fairly big buffer to deal with network uncertainties).

Sounds like I've been getting looping since I started the player - Just stopped it, went to a different station and came back and now I have a real live feed. I've been listening to a test for the last xx hours :(

OMG. Swatting flies. So, who told them about our Chester antics then? C'mon. Own up DRZ. :p

Mind you, no mention of lemony fresh, so I can probably let you off. Probably. ;D

Mark

Ooh. Feek gets a mention. Martin's friend apparently. ;D

Can anyone else get the webcams working? I can't and i want to throw imaginary things at whoever is singing.

Feek
03-11-2007, 00:38
Nope, they're not loading.

Blackstar
03-11-2007, 00:40
Hmm have forwarded the problem to Martin.

Dr. Z

OK heat has possibly taken care of the apps room webcam but the studio cams are back online.

Launching from a nightclub is a pretty hectic business but we did it and it went smoothly. You should have seen me! I had one ear listening to an off-air feed, one listening to the live output from the desk and also on the phone to the studio to relay timing information and whatnot, all whilst under the feet of a DJ!

Damn good job - except the naughty swearword that crept in there. Oops. ;D

PS - IE spotted a coding error on the homepage:

<img src="http://img.bizrate.com/br/us/logos/adbanners/118x29.gif" width="118" height="29" border="0" onClick=" http://www.bizrate.com/?rf_code=hud500\ " style="border:none;cursor:pointer;" alt="shopbot" />

As that bit of code is probably sourced from bizrate I guess there's nowt you can do, but just in case. :)

Dr. Z

Will get that investigated - cheers :)

Agreed - I've closed it now because I'm on TeamSpeak but it was sounding good.

The guy thats on air at the moment has had a fair bit to drink - its probably for the best you tuned out :D

Blackstar

Well i sort of guessed from the fact he is presenting half nakid!

Dr. Z

When it comes down to it, I absolutely LOVE radio. It rocks.

Mark
03-11-2007, 01:24
True. I've tuned out too now as that's a bit too loud for post midnight for me, but it was all good.

PS - I think your newsreader had a little trouble pronouncing Menezes. :)

We get our news from IRN, so it was them that goofed, not us :)

The 6 o'clock news is done in-house though :)

Some interesting statistics for you:

Currently, the streaming server is outputting ~1Mbps. It has already reached the 32bit (4Gb) wrap on upload twice today.

Over the duration of the broadcast we will use 90 VHS tapes and will create over 30Gb of MP3 logs @96kbps.

The temperature in the studio (not the apps room) is probably touching on the 30c mark, and will be extremely humid too.

We are drawing somewhere in the region 20A of continuous current.

We are spending roughly £8/hr to stay on air, excluding tech "costs" that have been "donated" my members of the society.

VHS tapes? er. why? :)

I use munin (it's in portage, though masked) for some nice funky bandwidth graphs on my boxen, but as you're now live it's probably not such a good idea to be playing with that sort of stuff now.

They're cheap? :)

VHS (and betamax) have a spec that allows the CD standard to be recorded digitally onto them directly. Its exactly perfect to allow 44100 samples/second at 16 bit (although the original CD standard was 14 bit and the two spare bits were used for error checking on the tapes). In fact, this was one of the main considerations when it was all being designed to allow people to get masters to the CD press perfectly!

We have two Sony PCM encoders which feed two standard VCRs in order to comply with the Wireless Telegraphy Act :)

Feek

When my brother was producing CDs from a Jazz group we were both involved with, all the mastering was done on a VHS box with a PCM encoder in front. Absolutely perfect.

I'm assuming the compliance with the act is the recording of all output? How long do you have to keep it for?

Dr. Z

42 days :)

Mark

DRZ, if you happen by the studio and they haven't fixed this yet, the audio levels on the machine that plays out jingles/trailers seem way too low (or at least they are on the web stream). It's been like that for at least an hour now. :)

Blackstar
08-11-2007, 13:47
Least you can load the site! I've not been able to get it to work for the last few days, keeps timing out.

Mark
08-11-2007, 13:48
Nope - I can't load the site either. I'm using the direct link to the stream which is working.

Joe 90

the site's working from here ... and i have to say - i'm impressed so far with this stream :)

Mark

Ooh, DRZ, I can hear you. ;D

Edit - I think you have half of Newcastle* heading in your direction right now. Biker Grove indeed. ;D

* Or at least you will when the few who heard that impression pass the message on to the rest. :)
