View Full Version : Quick! School me on Jap food!
Tonight I am being taken to Sapporo Teppanyaki and I am a bit nervous about the food!
I have had a poke about the menus and whatnot but I really dont know what flavours I should be expecting. I am really intolerant of spicy food and I really am not a fan of fishy fish so I need a bit of guidance on what is safe!
Come on BD Foodies, help me out!

That might rule out about 80% of the menu.
Try a noodle soup or similar. It's not at all spicy and normally has vegetables, meat or fish options. I think the thick noodles are called udon, but I'm not certain of that.
If you're not a spicey fella, avoid wasabi! It's a greeny sauce and is *extremely* hot (if done proper!)
Just having a look at the menu... If you're not keen on the fish side of things then the Futo would be a reasonably good choice. You will get a large lump of rice and it will have a piece of omelette/cucumber or other vegetable in it (when I say large... bigger than a standard maki sushi piece!). If you get that and maybe some Tempura - battered things (but really fluffy and very yurmy) then that would be cool.
Oh just seen.. they do assorted vegetable tempura so that wouldn't be a bad choice! If you like prawns then try out some other sushi (maybe some Maki Sushi - this is what the standard sushi looks like in shops and things)
You normally have what I call sushi gumph to begin with and then finish off with a hot dish (traditionally noodles which are drowned in a soupy type thing - very yurmy!) I've had the Tori before which is a chickeny type one - really nice and would recommend it as it's a simple dish - can't go wrong! Oh, and then ofcourse sake :) It's... interesting. You'll love it or hate it, but try it all the same!
For you I would order:
Futo
Vegetable Tempura
Tori
I would probably make you try something else as well - you cannot not try raw fish!
What I would personally order from that menu as a standard would be:
Maki Sushi
California Sushi
Ika
Tori
Normally you will order one set of food at a time and the waiter will come back for the next order (as everything has to be freshly done and eaten). So get an idea of what you want - maybe speak to who you're going with and see whether they want to share and get a shared Maki - you can eat the less fishy ones or at least give it a go! Raw fish doesn't taste that fishy at all. You'll probably be pleasantly surprised :)
I heart sushi. Could eat it all the time! Nom nom nom nom!
Have fun!
Don't forget to close your eyes and imagine you're in anime :D I want to be a big fan of jFood. I'm slowly starting to like rice but like Durz I can't see myself going for raw fish or spicey stuff. I quite like beef fried rice but the darn chippy always puts spring onion in it, as do all those Uncle Bens meals. Silly onion!
Never had it before - its something I would love to try but only with someone who knew what was what
Have a quick look here:

Love this place. Gorgeous food.
Sorry I can't help you Mr Fussypants, but NOM!!!!!! Just had a look at that menu and drooooooooooooolled at all the gorgeous sushi. I would advise asking someone else if you can try a bit of their sushi. You may be a convert and it's not THAAAT fishy because it's so dang fresh. Me and the wife are in Manc before Christmas. Do you know if they do a lunchtime special? YUMSKI!
Hope you manage to find something you like :)

Only advice I can give is...
DO NOT SNORT POWDERED WASABI!
It's not big or clever...
Bloody funny for other people though.
Well, it was pretty amazing! I don't know how many of you have been to a teppanyaki restaurant before, but its all theatrically cooked in front of you and its really entertaining! The service was very, very good and the food was excellent.
Also, Enrique Iglesias was sitting 2 tables down!

Excellent.
What did you throw at him?
Pete, have you tried asking them not to put spring onions in? We don't like the prawns in ours and they just don't put them in when we order it.
Never occurred to me :D
Excellent.

*deep breath...self restraint.....exhail*
Never occurred to me :D
Mic regularly asks for no onions in things :)
And I've been known to ask for food with no **** from time to time ;)
And get responses back when the food turns up, such as whose is the one with no ****. ;D
What did you eat DRZ?! :) Glad you had fun!

Oh....I caught this one a bit late....
Had a quick squiz at the menu and indeed there are some rather nice things on there (yakitori and yakisoba are very good with beer...I hope the served Sapporo beer too)
I've just had a proper read through of the menu and I'm really glad that I can now manage rice. Steak and fried rice \o/ I can goto a Japanese restaurant woo :D Just gotta work on all the other strange things.
