The living room wallpaper and coving is all gone:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/Takhisis_uk/Our%20House/LivingRoom-NoWallpaper3.jpg

And we've been playing with testers (ignore the yellow - that was for the hallway):

We just can't afford a plasterer to come in and skim the room which it desperatly needs before we paint it.

Do they need plastering ? can you get away with filling and then painting ? You'd be surprised how a coat of paint can make a dreadfull wall look half decent :)

We've just painted the walls downstairs even though they are full of cracks and dents because I just couldn't stand to look at the sickening yellow and terracotta anymore and there's no point in plastering them yet because we've got some MAJOR demolition work to do downstairs  They don't look too bad now :)

This is an option as at some point we want to put the meter cupboard outside which would mean more plastering where the cupboard gets ripped out.

We though about just trying to fill in but some of it is terrible - whoever did the plastering before needs to be shot

Currently I'm not too fussed - even with bare walls and huge tester spots, it already looks 100% better than before

I need to buy myself a sander though - there are bits of the coving still stuck to the wall and ceiling which need sanding off, and eventually I want to sand all the bannisters

Mic finds it funny that I'm the one who keeps looking at all the power tools :D :embarassed:

Can I ask what has made you decide it needs skimming? Only, Me and pheebs have spent today ripping wallpaper down from one room and we have plans to paint it...

Tak
09-08-2006, 18:11
It was shoddily done in the first place, there are ripples and dents esp round edges like the fire place, the door and the windows.

We just felt that if we were going to paint it, the dodgy bits will just show up more.

We had to take out a loan to get the upstairs done and will have to remortgage to get the downstairs done :/ Luckily we do have a very nice chunk of equity to play with :)

So far the upstairs has cost about 5/6K ... doing all this work isn't cheap :(

Piggypad cost about 25K !!!

I don't think I have brilliant taste but I do like to go for all creams/neutrals .. I don't think you can ever go wrong with those tones :)

We already have a loan each and we're only a year into our mortgage :undecided:

I just have to try and remember that both loans finish in 3 years and as long as we can keep an eye on our credit cards, everything will suddenly get a lot easier.

But sometimes 3 years seems like so far away :(

Pheebs
12-08-2006, 18:01
Wow, looks fab piggy! Decorating can dent the wallet majorly... luckily for us this place only really needs sprucing up as opposed to major renovation.

Though saying that we're considering getting a driveway put in which is going to eat up our savings! D'oh!

Keep the piccies coming and keep up the good work! :)

I know the feeling, we've got I think 2 loans and 2 credit agreements finishing about March/April time next year and a car loan finishing in June .. by this time next year we won't know what to do with ourselves ;D

The wait is hard though :(

Thanks Pheebs - I really wish sometimes all this place needed was a lick of paint rather than major work in every room but then it's nice that we're doing it together now - it feels like OUR home rather than me moving into his home :)

Has everyone seen the before pics or should I post some ?

Of course you have, you chose me ;)

Sticking to a similar range of colours/theme throughout the house actually makes it much easier to do IMO. Most of our colours are very similare with just slight variations as we go. It also helps that our tastes are pretty much the same :)

We did some more minor work this weekend .... WE FITTED A DISHWASHER WOHOOOO !!!! :D

It's only a slimline one, Desmo's sister has just had her kitchen re-fitted with all new appliances so we got the dishwasher ! I love it I love it !. Living here is the first time I've been without a dishwasher and it's been driving me up the wall :p

We're off to IKEA tomorrow hopefully to get the rest of the stuff for the wardrobes and the dining table for downstairs. Once all that's done I'll post some more piccies :)

The kitchen in PiggyPad was from B&Q and cost just under 2K inc all the applicances ! - apart from the Fridge & Freezer :)

Lol it's the same with us, Cliff has the built in wardrobe which isn't very big and we bought a huge wardrobe with a big bit in the middle with 3 drawers below and 2 parts either side as well which is all mine ;D He also uses the spare room built in wardrobe for his suits at the moment though.

It looks really great :) I really enjoy decorating, we painted our living room a few weeks ago and can't wait to get the dining room done too.

Aww thanks Girls :) Went to Wyevale today to get some bits and bobs and now really really can't wait to get the garden finished - hopefully in time for summer next year !

Before pic of the patio taken yesterday :

We mainly concentrated on clearing the patio and the side yesterday but we cut a fair bit back as well - it's not great but it's better than what it was and will do until we can afford to do it all properly :

More work done ! - Not a lot by us though :p

Got the scabby windows in the bathroom replaced

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/piggymon/Pigmo%20Pad/bathroom.jpg

The window behind the bath was clear glass so we had to use a board to protect our privacy and our neighbour's eyes ;D Now we have frosted glass there the bathroom is so much lighter !

Just have to get the glass cleaned, reveals replastered, touch up a little paint and then get some window dressings on them :)

Not criticism, just surprised. :)

No, we haven't really done any more work :embarassed:

But I have done some design work for our next major stage :D
I've been using SketchUp 5 to create a 3D rendering of the house. I'll be going right from the front of the driveway to the very back of the garden. I've done the basics of the front rooms that will be knocked into one. I still need to add another chimney breast and the stairs, then I can pop in some more furniture to see how it all fits :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/piggymon/Pigmo%20Pad/Designs/frontroom1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/piggymon/Pigmo%20Pad/Designs/frontroom2.jpg

Next major step is to add the driveway and kitchen. Then I'll start working on the garden. Another plus is that this is cheaper than doing it all for real ;D

I look forward to seeing that lounge after it's been sorted. :)

I forgot to mention, you realise your loo wobbles? Or was it just my hangover doing that? :p

Desmo
04-12-2006, 12:21
Yep, it does wobble :p

We need to do some work behind it to box in the pipes so I didn't see much point in screwing it down. We really should warn people more often ;D

Front Room : Shows the amount of space we should have with a few bits of furniture chucked in.

Kitchen : Walls wont be this colour :p Need to add more cupboards and doors yet.

Garden Decking and Patio : Plenty of space for BBQ's :D

Little Update.

Things are getting done in preperation for the big downstairs work which should hopefully be starting 1st week in March !

Have had 2 kitchens designed, 1 at MFI which was a bit pants but pretty much within budget at £5K and the other one was at magnet, much better designed and to bring it within budget we decided against all the fancy add ons .. but nooooo .. even with a £6K discount it was coming in at £10K !!! ... And no it wasn't gold plated

Going to B&Q on Wed to get one done there, it's really what we want and we're confident it will be within budget - we want this one :

http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/images/product/largeImage/Wlnut_Stle_Shkr_RS_Plain_hg.jpg

Walnut shaker style with a Ice White solid surface worktop with the sink moulded in.

Double glazing is all sorted - dude is coming here next friday to seal the deal.

2 Sash windows, 1 sash bay, French doors, new back door, new composite front door, 2 normal windows in kitchen ( inc bricking up door to create window ) and 2 new windows in bathroom for just under £6K :)

Went over to DFS today and ordered our Sofa - it's a 3 seater sofabed with footstool and chair, just over £1200 and will be delivered 1st week in May

http://www.dfsonline.co.uk/product.php?product=2326&cat=160

We've ordered it in a chocolate colour scheme.

Things left to do :

Sort out builder to knock down walls
Sort out plasterer
Sort out joiner
Sort out flooring

Whilst all of this is being done we're going to live with Jamie's parents.

Can't believe we're finally getting the downstairs done .. YAY !!! :D

6 years ago, my flat was worth 30k. Sadly, I didn't own it then.

GRRR @ B&Q !!!

Went to get our kitchen designed last night, told them what we wanted.

B&Q : Oh, you want a solid worktop ? We only do that fitted only
US : That's ok, I don't mind paying for the worktop
B&Q : No you have to pay for the WHOLE kitchen to be fitted

ok, bit peed off but we go through the quote - comes to the end and the fitting is about as much as the damn kitchen .. which isn't cheap

Just been on the phone to customer services trying to sort it out :/

Desmo
15-02-2007, 10:49
You haven't said that what makes it more frustrating is the 5 pro kitchen fitter mates that I've got who will do it for peanuts :/

Admiral Huddy
15-02-2007, 10:52
Get an idependant kitchen fitter. I have a number of a decent chap who's done a lot of work for me. The advantage is, is that that you get what you want and it can work out cheaper.

Piggymon
15-02-2007, 10:59
That's what we want to do Paul, we have a kitchen fitter in the family who will do it for next to nothing but B&Q REFUSE to supply the Kitchen & Worktop without them fitting it !!

I can understand the worktop because it's specialised and would be happy to pay for that but I refuse to pay for them to fit the units when we can get it done at a fraction of the price and a lot quicker ! ( they are currently quoting 15weeks for installation )

Spoke to a nice chap at B&Q who agreed with everything I said and gave me the number of the company who supply them with the worktops :D

Just waiting for B&Q to come back to me with our measurements so we can get the quote done elsewhere

£2.5K

What a ******* saga !

Burble
15-02-2007, 11:41
That sort of price drop is very common with double glazing but so far I've not found that sort of drop with a kitchen. I'd be very happy if I could, my kitchen is smaller than yours and for the stuff I want I've been quoted £9.5K :/

Piggymon
15-02-2007, 11:43
Christ ! .. gold plated taps ?

Where have you been to get quotes ?

MFI & Magnet are very expensive. We were quoted £10.5K with magnet

Burble
15-02-2007, 11:45
So far I've only been to a couple of independant companies.

It's the granite worktops and splashbacks that are really hurting the price.

When I'm back from holiday I'll ring a few more companies and get some more quotes. £9.5k was more than I wanted to pay!

Piggymon
15-02-2007, 11:47
I'll let you know what we get quoted for the worktops & upstands.

B&Q's cabinets are very nice and reasonable - the £2.5K quote was including all cabinets, soft close drawers, intergrated Fridge/Freezer, 6 burner gas hob, double oven and chimney

You could get the cabinets from them and then the worktops from eleswhere.

EDIT : and semi-intergrated dishwasher

Burble
15-02-2007, 11:49
£2.5k for all that lot? Blimey, that's good going. I looked at the worktop link you posted so I'd already planned to give them a shout and see what it'll cost direct from them.

Piggymon
15-02-2007, 11:50
As I said to the B&Q chap, their products are excellent and so are their prices ..... apart from the fitting charges which are waaaaaay OTT.

Really hope these guys can sort our worktop out - I'm on the verge of crying because I can't get the kitchen I want :(

Burble
15-02-2007, 11:52
I'm sure you'll be able to get what you want, although it may take a bit of looking around. I think you were pretty lucky finding those lovely windows so quickly so it'll all balance out :)

Piggymon
15-02-2007, 12:39
It's just so bloody frustrating :(

We've spent weeks looking at kitchens, finally decided on this one and then it gets taken away from us :/

If it came down to it I would bite the bullet and pay for it to be fitted IF there wasn't this 3 month+ waiting list !

We could change the worktop for a normal one and it would be a damnsite cheaper and we could get it done all within our timescale but I know everytime I went into the kitchen I would be thinking " I didn't really want you ".

The reason we really want the solid surface is that the kitchen is going to be a U shape but due to where the boiler and the window is the sink will be off centre. If we have a moulded or undermounted sink then it won't be noticable.

Hopefully these worktop guys can come back with a price within budget and a delivery/installation time within our timeframe :)

Desmo

Is it? I don't think that's really a problem. I just want it cos they look nice :)

If all else fails, the B&Q kitchen plus the Magnet worktop brings us up to budget ;)

We're getting there.

This evening we had a builder and a plasterer round to quote, tomorrow we have another builder and on wed we have a joiner round to quote for the stairs.

Windows are booked in for 3rd week in March.

Skip is coming on the 1st of March ( I have a day off work ). I'll be spending that day sorting out all the ****e in the shed and cupboad under the stairs - we're hoping to then spend the weekend ripping out the kitchen :D

Tomorrow we're ordering the kitchen, has about an 8 week wait so we're doing that first then sorting the worktops out afterwards - we're probably going for the solid surface but need to wait for other quotes to come in before we can work out if it comes within budget

Need to get the place empty and ready for the builders by about the 8th of March.

The point where I start thinking " oh crap why did we start doing this " is coming ever closer :/

It'll definitely be worth it in the end. Sure, it'll be awful whilst they're doing it but once it's all finished you'll be so pleased with it. And we only just managed to pay for it :D

Our cheque came through this morning whilst at work so it's not been paid into the bank yet. B&Q needed full payment so we decided to put it on my credit card and pay it off once the cheque is in. So half way through all the paperwork it occured to me that I'd need the PIN for my CC. Now my CC was issued back in 2004, way before chip and pin so I've never used the PIN and don't know what it is. I asked if I could sign for it but that wasn't allowed. We were stuck :/

But then I had a brainwave (you've got to think on your feet ;)) I told the woman I'd phone the store from my mobile and pay over the phone :D

I think she thought I was joking but I said I could do that, not sign and not need my PIN. In the end we went to the till and she run it through there manually as a telesales order. SORTED!!!! ;D

I wanted a stone coloured paint...it was fine when it was wet but now its dried its really....stoney :/ I cant describe it. I'm going to do a couple of surfaces with duckegg blue, see if that lifts it a bit.

I'll do pics when Im done troughing chinese takeaway :/

ARGGHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111111

*breathes*

WTF is it with tradesmen and letting you down ! ARGH !!!

The stairs is the last thing to be sorted out. 2/3 weeks ago I phone a joiner and he comes round a few days later .. he thought we just wanted a ready made MDF jobby so said he would have to get another dude round and said he would phone me ... a week later no luck so I left a message.

Didn't get back to me the next day so I rang again and finally spoke to him. Said he would call his joiner .... again ... and get back to me last friday.

I'm now pissed off so phone another joiner who comes round last Friday, seemed to be ok. Said he would get a quote in the post.

Today comes round and no sign so I call .. no answer - leave a message asking him to get back to me urgently. Nothing by this evening so I've just phoned ANOTHER joiner who is hopefully coming round tomorrow night

*is pissed off*

We've just sorted out the kitchen - cupboards are now empty ready for tomorrow's destruction ;D

All the boxes in the dining room will be relocated to the shed and upstairs and we've FINALLY decided on colours.

So am I !!!! .... The kitchen is the worst room in the house but doing what we need to do is going to cost mega bucks so we had to wait until the current mortgage deal finished so we could remortgage to get the cash to do the downstairs.

When we move back in it will feel like we're moving into a new house ;D

The corner wall where the boiler is, that's an outside loo.

That wall is being knocked down to square off the kitchen and we're going to be putting a window there :)

The floorboards look half decent in the photo but they're actually rather poo so we're plyboarding the floor and then getting a cherry oak type floor fitted.

http://www.karndean.com/images/gallery_photos/VanGoghVGW54T_A4V2.jpg

Fireplaces are being knocked out and replaced with a nice simple hole in the wall where we're going to put candles and pebbles and stuff

It's destruction day WOOOOT !!!

I seem to remember you're not a fan of UPVC, what are you going for with the windows?

Desmo
16-03-2007, 15:46
Well, actually, it is PVC ;D

But we've gone for full sash style windows complete with horns and bars. Should look as close to the originals as we can get. We weren't against PVC as such, just against the normal style on our house. It just wouldn't look right. It's cost us more to get the sash style but I think it will look just right :)

We've gone for normal windows in the kitchen and bathroom though. And don't forget the new doors to...WOOT!!! :D

OK, the windows and doors are finished (Well almost). The wrong panels in the kitchen door were ordered so they're coming back to swap those over. They also noticed a scratch on a handle and some damaged lock pieces so they're replacing them too. Excellent company to deal with.

So, here's the main changes out front.

Amazing how much difference some new windows can make isn't it :) I still love ours, and they were only cheap jobbies. Yours look really nice and in keeping with the house.

Desmo
23-03-2007, 10:29
I'm not sure on the brick thing. I was going to have a chat with people over the road as they had their front done a few years back. I think it was sand blasted which just takes off the top layer of crud and dirt. I think we'll get the front done at the same time.

As for removing he paint, I'm really not sure. Could be quite a big job I reckon, hence we'll just be repainting ours in a nicer lighter colour.
