Went to go drop some groceries in Tina's car this morning when I got off work only to find the dreaded green puddle under the front end.

Yup, the water pump packed it in. $550.00 to fix. It requires a couple tools that I don't have, and also requires the car to be on a lift (which I don't have).

So off it goes to the local Chrysler dealership for them to **** with it.

Needless to say I'm not a happy camper.

Damn, that's an expensive waterpump :(

Nah, the water pump is only about $100, it's the 2.9 labor hours, the $50 timing belt, the $50 belt tensioner and $50 tensioner pulley, the shop fees for antifreeze etc that add it all up.

I will admit that modern cars are much better when it comes to safety and comfort, but to be a mechanic on one you need to be a double jointed contortionist!!

I mean, I can replace the water pump on my old truck in a matter of half an hour with a basic Halford's socket set and a screwdriver!! Oh, and be able to do it without losing any skin.

Try that on ANYTHING on a modern FWD car and it ain't gonna happen.....

Of course, nothing can compare to trying to work on one of those hairdryers on wheels. ;)

You have Halfords over there?

No, just familiar with the brand name. Over here they're called Schucks/Kragen/Auto Zone. Pretty much the same thing, though. A single parts counter manned by either high school kids or ancient old farts that move in inches per hour. 3-5 aisles of generic parts (aka stick on tat) accessible to the public. Almost 90% of the stock is either made in Taiwan or China.

Sound like Halford's? :)

Not far off although Halfords starts to resemble walmart at this time of year as they start stocking anything and everything that they reckon they can sell a few of in the run up to xmas.

They had snooker tables in there the other day.
