Powerline Network???

Anyone know anything about these Powerline network adapters? In particular. If I plug it in to a power extension will it work or does it need to go straight into the mains?

It's supposed to go direct into the wall, but it works fine in power strips, though it might cut the bandwidth and/or range a little. If the power strip has surge suppression it might cut the bandwidth and/or range rather a lot more, but it still works.

I have two Netgear 200Mbps units, both in surge strips. They report transmission speed of 38Mbps. I actually get about 20Mbps, but that's more than enough for and way better than the unstable 5-7Mbps I could get with £100+ worth of wireless kit.

Solwise are also recommended around these parts.

I found that running through any kind of strip gave me much increased attenuation using my pair of 80Mbps Solwise doofers and direct in the wall socket was a lot better.

Huddy's got mine for testing at the moment *looks at Huddy*.

I'd do that too if I had spare sockets, but I have the grand total of three sockets in my lounge and, ooh, about 12 plugs to go into them. :(

Yes, I have calculated the load and it's well within limits (about 2A on one socket, 5A on another, and the third is too far away to be useful, and that's with everything on which is extremely rare).

I removed 9 x 4-way extension cables when I did the shack back around Easter. They were all full and all off of a single 13a socket :)

I have two 8-ways in the lounge, both nearly full, and an 8, 6, and 4-way in the 'office', with two empty sockets across the lot. Not counting the UPS which has loads of empty sockets but I don't have plugs to put in them. :)

So basically the 200mps is likely to be a load of rubbish and more likely under 50mps. Still better than the dodgey wireless....
How do you connect the PC to the unit? via Ethernet cable?

Considering getting it as I don't really wanna drill holes through walls in the flat... too much like DIY for my liking....

It's only that low because they've got two surge suppressed power strips and this house's dodgy wiring inbetween. With a little creative thinking I'm sure better results are possible.

PS - If you have one of those plug-in pest repellent things then you'll be out of luck using Powerline on the same circuit. I don't, because I don't have a pest problem, but it's worth the warning. :)

And yes, ethernet. Briding two networks like you're trying to do as well so you should have successful results (might need a bit of creative tweaking of one or both routers to make it work though).
