View Full Version : iTunes on a 64 bit Vista ?

This is a bit of a problem.
I take it there's no 64bit version of iTunes?

The 32bit version works if you copy over some certain dlls and replace them from somewhere vague i know because i've not needed to do this, but ive read about that somewhere. Have a google its possible :) Basically apple are being hard assed the 32 bit version works fine theyve just diabled it.
Not sure that's the case with the iPod Touch - That install of iTunes works perfectly with my old Nano, it seems as though it's just the Touch that's not happy.
I think what I'm going to do is create an XP VM just for iTunes, that way I can tell it to organise the music library and keep a copy within the VM itself. With nothing else installed it's going to be nice and quick and it should work well.

Have you tried running iTunes in compatibility mode?
Dunno if it will work but might be worth trying before going to the trouble of setting up a VM.
Yup, I have. It's not the version of Windows, it's the fact that it's 64 bit.

Poo!
Phew, I googled a bit yesterday at work to see if I could find out whether it'd work in a VM or not and the general opinion and comments from people who have tried it was that it doesn't work.
But it does. And it works quite well. I've told iTunes to manage my library and it's done a much better job than I thought it would.
So I'm happy :D

VMWare or VPC?
Glad it worked, still hate iTunes with a passion :(
VMWare.
Still not keen on iTunes, especially as I have to VM to use it properly, but it's working better than it ever has.

can you post the links to your find? Ta,
The only real find is VMWare (http://www.vmware.com/).
VMWare Server 2.0 is the way to go - beta or not. It's got USB 2.0 support (as does Workstation 6.0). Using Server 1.x will be slow to broken. VPC 2004 won't work at all (dunno about newer versions).
I'm using Workstation to create and configure the VMs, should I then use Server to run the VM itself? It seems to run well with Workstation.
Nope, Workstation is fine. It's Server's bigger brother afterall (yeah, I know that sounds perverse, but functionality wise it's true).
That used to be the case when server was GSX but it's a bit crippled now - workstation only loses out on running VM's without an interactive logon. I've found 2.0 beta 1 to be a bit unstable and USB support isnt enabled at all yet, so you couldn't use it anyway :)

You will be fine with Workstation 6, you might get some small memory footprint improvement by switching to VMWare Player (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/) but it probably won't be particuarly noticeable.
173Mb just for the player - That's some download!
s it possible to create a shorcut to the VM that I can just access without having to kick one of the apps in first? I'm downloading the player right now so that may support it but I'm not sure.
Player will do that aye. Just double click the vmx.
But to install Player, I have to remove Workstation, and if I remove Workstation I can't make/tweak any VMs.
I'll cope with opening it and doing it from there.
Create a shortcut to the .vmx file. Double click it. :)
Create a shortcut to the .vmx file. Double click it. :)
That's the file I wanted, knew there would be one somewhere - Ta :)
Using the command line switch along with vmrun works better :)
Single click startup now. The shortcut points to:
\progra~2\vmware\vmware~1\vmrun start "C:\Users\feek\Documents\Virtual Machines\Work\Windows XP Professional.vmx"

The new iTunes is rummored not to have any problems feek, check it out... I'm on 64bit myself so i can't say for certain but its definately what i've heard...
I would, except that it's all organised, neat and tidy within my VM and painfully messy external from it. Is it possible to export it all from one to t'other?

That would be something i know nothing of, i'm sure there are config files you can just copy and paste which would sort things out, but things are *never* that easy :p
Actually it doesn't seem to be too bad - I've just dumped the music out from the itunes directory in the VM and am re-importing it into the new install and it's happily importing away to itself.
