Hello!

GUess what guess what guess what guess what!!! I nearly have my website finished! YAAAAAAAAY!

Well... the design...! I'm having a friend put it together for me as a proper website that you can clicky and things move and stuff... that's just a wee bit too complex!

I've managed to secure my domain name ... www.akettleoffish.co.uk ... but have been told I need to get it hosted asap with "key words" on it for search engines etc (fankoo muchly Lozza! :D)

Sooo...

Could anyone host me a one paged webby for now or suggest where I could get it hosted just so I can get it onto search engines until it is fully made and I can get a bigger hosting space?

I'm not that sure about hosting space either. I know my friend whose putting it together will help me but how do I figure out how big-a-hosting space I will need and all that technical gumph?!

Wubble wubs wub wubs! Very very VERY extremely excited - it looks AWESOME!

:D

Can someone move this to compooters and consoles for my blond-haired better half?

Pheebs

*edit* OOPSY! Sorry! Wrong thready bit thingy-ma-bob! Pwease can it be moved as my perfect-better-other-half-whos-browny-coloured-haired has pointed out! Fankoo! Wubs!

Oh yes... and how would I make a straight forward front page for the webby if I were to get it hosted now?

I've been doing all my drawings and designs in Photoshop CS3... so I don't have even the foggiest how to make a plain webpage?

It only needs to be my logo and a wee note saying "coming soon" :)

I'm ghey I know :) Sowwy!

Oh yeh. And same goes for key words! Where do I type in the key words for searching and things?

*confudderling all this nerdy business*

:D ;D

All worth it in the end!

Talk to beansprout, some pretty competitive hosting and he's in house :p
Is the SEO really necessary for a site that will probably go up in a few months? Where will it get here, from 1,000,000 in the google results to 750,000?

Mark

Beansprout's your man, and he's done a bit of SEO stuff too, though whether it'll help in this case would remain to be seen. :)

*eak* I don't get most of the above!!!

I know what will be on my holding page... I just don't know how to make it into a webpage (I hope that makes sense!)

Bear in mind I have physically drawn _all_ of my website so not put linkys in/done any coding or anything. It currently is a PSD file which my friend is going to get and stick together to form a webby!

I genuinely know _nothing_ about webpages and how to host one and enter these "keywords" people are talking about :(

I'm sorry to be soo soo dumb :(

26-11-2007, 12:22
I would say focus on the content over the keywords. From everything I've read Google ignores keywords. I'm usually on the first page for most of the search terms I want, but "liverpool photographer" is proving tough to break in to. #1 for "hdr guide" though :D But things to focus on are the page names and the content. Put the keywords you want in the url, the alt attributes and text. So like for my hdr guide its http://www.vanilladays.com/hdr-guide with that all in the body of the text. Google likes urls.

Pheebs do you know how your friend will "stick this together" i just hope to god he doesn't use tables (we've already drilled this into you right?). Makre sure he does a good job :)

Pheebs
26-11-2007, 16:28
Nope :D Not the foggiest! ;D Hehehehhehehe!

He's a good chap though - did P&O's webby (http://www.poferries.com/tourist/) so I have a feeling he kinda knows what he's doing :)

I plan on invading my school tomorrow to poke him (he's the techy there) so hopefully he can sort me out and talk me through what I need to do :)

Here's a couple of widdled down jpegs of the website so you get a general idea!

http://pheebeh.googlepages.com/WebbyHomePage.jpg

http://pheebeh.googlepages.com/WebbyGallery.jpg

http://pheebeh.googlepages.com/WebbyRandom.jpg

http://pheebeh.googlepages.com/Webby-Games.jpg

I don't think it's going to be too complex... it's just going to hold an awful lot of pictures (albeit teeny sized)! The most complex thing on there is the Cabbage Power game (which, is GENIUS... even if I do say so myself!)

Fingers crossed it'll be up and running soon. I'm so excited about having my own website. I hope it will be easy for me to update it. I'm sure Duncan will show me how to if needs be!

I'm sure he'll be able to work something good out then by the sounds of things :). Lookin good, if he can make that accessible andSE friendly i'll be impressed (doesn't mean its very difficult, but i can see why i could be a bit of a pain).

Pheebs
26-11-2007, 17:53
SE friendly? Whats that mean?!

I think he's in for a bit of a shocker... I went with him with not a clue and he sent me away to create anything. I don't think he'll be quite expecting this :)

It's going to be partially flash kinda thing. Scrolly and moving things... it's relatively simple I think in comparison to a lot of webbys... but then I'm saying this and have never created one so I'm possibly way out! :)

I'll have a chat to the other admins about maybe putting it on the BD server on a temporary basis.

SE = Search Engine, if a search engine can't index or read your website, or it doesn't like it for some reason, you won't be able to find it very easily from their results. It's a big topic but have a glace over this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization).

Pheebs
26-11-2007, 19:23
MB - that would be handy if it could be possible but don't worry too much if not! I will have to buy some webspace for it eventually anyway as it will be reasonably sized! (plus it's always nice to have it under your belt if you know what I mean!)

Thank you LD and everyone for your help so far - I really appreciate it!

I am hoping majorly that I can figure it all out in my brain properly tomorrow with Duncan! If that's the case then I'll be flying!

Really very excited. Have been tweaking a few bits and annotating alot of print outs for Duncan today. I really hope it won't take long to set up... I want to play on it now! :D

Mark
26-11-2007, 20:48
I can shove it on my server until Feb if MB can't. After Feb I haven't decided what I'm doing with the server so it wouldn't be fair to set expectations.

Where is that Beansprout slacker anyway? Hope he's OK. :dunno:

Beansprout
27-11-2007, 04:12
I'm good thanks, just *really* busy and took some time-out, this weekend in particular :)

Generally people with links on my sites get indexed by Google in 3 - 5 days, so if we host it then that shouldn't be a problem to sort out :)

Pheebs
27-11-2007, 09:07
Why on earth were you people up at 3am on a monday night!! Are you bonkers!

Hehehehe!

Beansprout - sorry to be dumb but when you say "if we host it" who's we? BD?

Lozza - I've already got my front page sorted with logo and all :D But big thanking you!

Sorting out a couple of bits that require some tweakage then off to Duncan!

Should imagine I'll be about for the next hour or so though!

Pheebs
27-11-2007, 09:58
Oh yus and lozza - I don't plan on selling goods from the website at the moment but depending on how things go I may well do beginning of next yearish.

Will probably provide a linky to an ebay shop though to make things a little easier.

Will have to see how it pans out!

*wubbles*

My christ I am seriously freezing my butt off here at the moment.

EEEEEEEE!

LOOKY LOOK LOOKy LoOoKo Look o kok ;l okl kok oLOOOK!

*POP* (www.akettleoffish.co.uk)

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! I know it's only a jpeg but YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Fleamail should work and all too! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Duncans plonked it on his server for the minute whilst he works on it ... said it will be put together slowly over the festive period (YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!) When it's done though I will buy a place to host it in and things so yeh - SORTED! YAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Am so excited!

He's not exactly said how much he's going to charge yet which is slightly worrying. I know he's good and won't muck me around... but how much would you normally pay a person to plonk your website together (bare in mind it's all there - it just needs to work and things in Flash) per hour? I have NOooOO idea what so ever.

I've emailed him asking to confirm it as I need to know but just thought you guys might be able to give me rough estimates to work with?

Wubbles!

It really does change from person to person. But could be into the hundreds depending on what you have done, how many pages, how complex, etc.

Aww poopy. So there's no average hourly rate thing about?

Boo.

There might be an average hourly rate but I wouldn't know it. Some of the more "web design" peeps around here might know :)

Yeah i was quite scared about breaking that news to you pheebs, i'm not sure hopw cheap you were expecting it but a few hunred wouldn't suprise myself if i was asking for a website...

Pheebs
28-11-2007, 12:16
Cheap?! Lollage, I wasn't expecting it to be cheap at all :D

I am anticipating around £200 - £300.... so I figure I'm on the right lines!

Either way it'll be worth it!

AND! The emails work! YAY!

YAYAYYAYAYAYYAY!

Very excited.

Now all I have to do is boring things (create some silly boring genericcy cards for Hallmark. Boo. I like my random ones.)

*runs along now*

Pheebs
04-12-2007, 18:00
YAAAAAAAY! Spoke to Duncan earlier and it's all gooood!

Price he's quoted is around £500 (£25 per hour) which, after browsing the net and things is much cheaper than what I expected :) (or is it? I think it's about right!!)

Canny wait. So excited. And hosting wise - the webby I will go with has a 3month free offer on at the moment which I may take up! YAY!

/me is itching with excitement!

LeperousDust
04-12-2007, 18:14
That sounds like great deal pheebs, he sounds like he'll do a good job too! Canny wait to see it :p

Pheebs
05-12-2007, 08:48
Thanks LD - I canny wait either!

Very tempted to consider a web design course for future needs. £500 is cheap - normally it's at least £100 per page (and I have more than 5!) Plus I'm really interested in it. It sounds like uber amounts of fun!

*ponders*

*jigs off to look at how much courses are*

Davey_Pitch
05-12-2007, 12:52
If I were making a website for someone with lots of Flash animation, £500 would be the bare minimum I'd charge considering how long the Flash stuff can take to make. Sounds like a good deal to me Pheebs :)

Haly
05-12-2007, 13:44
Sounds a good deal :)
I was going to recommend the OU too, I've signed up to a course starting in February and hoping to continue to do it as a certificate. I find proper courses motivate me more than doing it myself, guess I just love having pieces of paper saying I've done stuff ;D

Pheebs
06-12-2007, 09:13
Well I'm doing Psychology OU so it would count towards my degree if I did a side one as I need to get another... 60points from somewhere I think... or maybe 30... after I've completed all the Psychology sections!

Looked on the OU webby and it would seem that the next webby design course starts in May! Boo! Missed out on the September one (which I should have realised as that's when my other one was due to start) but didn't think the course would start as late as May!

Doh! Will pm Holly methinks and ask her what she reckons of it!

Lozza - about learning online... I like it but I would like something a bit more structured and then venture onto advancing my skills with online tutorials. I'm a complete noob and getting started and finding out where to start would be confusing to me :D

Back again! Anyone know any good deals for hosting a webby? Not needing a too big a job... Probably something like 100 - 250mb!

Seen these on 123-reg... wondering whether people could advise me whether they're any good?

123-reg hosting stuff! (http://www.123-reg.co.uk/web-hosting/)

Taaaa! :D

I can highly recommend www.blacknight.ie. Irish company but my mate works for them. They currently host a few sites of mine and a friend of mines without issue. They also take on huge contracts so they're not small time.

I've recommended them before and I'll recommend them again (though I really should get commission ;) :p)

Having said that, 123-reg's domain services have served me well for several years now. I know nothing about their hosting though.

Registron. That'd be Adz. Also a past meet attendee and a good guy who I deal with regularly. It's fair to say that bigger customers are his primary concern these days though he looks after me very well. Looking at the packages available I would, however, suggest that others are better placed to do this job.

For SEO we use a keyword assistant website, but I clicked on it today and it doesn't appear to be working :/

Here is another that has been suggested: http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/

Basically Pheebles, you enter into the search the types of things you think people would search for on google to get your page come up and it shows you relevant keywords other that what you input.

You can write the keywords into the text and code of your website so that the Google spiders pick it up and push it to the top of the list when people search for you :)

If you see here: http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&q=jobs+in+interior+design&meta=

I have searched for 'jobs in interior design' and because our SEO (search engine optimised) pages are so leet we are top of the list ;)

Just thought I would (try) to add some knowledge to the thread!

(I think I'm right?... right?!)
