View Full Version : Dealing with users, or 'how to turn it off and back on again'.
A number of our lusers connect to our systems via company provided broadband and a VPN. It works and it works well but for some unexplained reason the routers we've provided often lose their connection to the internet. They're bog-standard Linksys jobbies which none of us in this department have had any problems with.
The fix for this is quite simple, reset the router and it reconnects.
I've got fed up with talking people through doing this so today I sent out a document to all the lusers with one of our routers.
Here it is (http://www.ukrm.org/feek/noddyguide.pdf).
Within five minutes I received an email reply.
"Feek, I thought the answer to all computer issues was turn off un plug make a coffee and reconnect . HA HA . Jonathan"
How rude!
My reply.
"The reason I've included lots of pictures is to make it easy for salesmen to understand"
He's a salesman ;D
I find it quite fun making these little guides up, I was recently asked by the MD how to make conference calls so I did this (http://www.ukrm.org/feek/conference.pdf) one. He told me it was "a bit diagramatical". I chuckled.

:p Very informative
LOL ;D
Love both of them :D
Want to see more Feek-plans :D
You should have used the same picture for the picking up and hanging up of the phone, complete with directional arrows!
Nah, the point was to be sure to use different pictures so it was obvious that I'd not skimped. I even re-photographed one of them because the text on the phone display was wrong!
I'm sure I can do more guides, I want to do one with my hand in pointing at something. I tried with the power plug on the router but it didn't work well.

For the hand pointing thing to work well you might want to consider getting someone to take the pictures so you can be in them ;)
How about making a guide to making a guide? Will be less effort in the long run as once suitably trained everyone else will be able to make the rest of the guides for you.

I took all those pictures in the two guides you see, and that's my hand in the second one. So I was multi-skilled. Effectively I was the Script Writer, Director, Camera Man, the Star and the Post Production Editor. Damn, I should get a pay raise!

Nah, where's the fun in that?
The irony being your last guide is so much better than the crappy things that come with the phones. People can relate to that :)

Loving those guides. ;D
What was the salesman's reply?
Bah, I edited that especially for the version I posted here to remove company details - It originally said "How to make conference calls using the xxxx telephone system" or something like that.
Sounds a bit Japanglish now.
Just been sent an 'oh so true but we can't publish that' intro to gaining access to our wireless network by one of my colleagues:
Congratulations on choosing the XXXXXXX XXXXXXX Wireless network for all your wireless Internet needs. You will be able to access Facebook and MSN as well as many other programs from on Campus.
To setup the network and begin using the Internet just follow this guide and you’ll be surfing the Internet before you can say "I need to download Firefox."
:D
Reminds me of our helpdesk: they keep logging urgent calls when a user can't get into Notes which is annoying because everyone can use webmail. I've told them time and time again how to talk the users through this but they fail miserably. I can't find the guide but I do remember the first screenshot was of the IE icon!

Won't they ever give up? I answer it.
"Hello, I can't get in, my keyboard is making the i in my i-number in capitals and I'm getting a password error" (our login names are an i followed by six numbers).
"Well login names aren't case sensitive, what's probably happening is that your terminal thinks it's got caps lock on and is taking your password in capitals.
"No, it never works with a capital i"
"Turn the main box off and back on to reset it and try again"
"OK" *pause*
"Right, it's back on now and I can put a little i in OK so that's going to work."
"Good good"
"But I know it won't work with a capital i"
"Yes it will, usernames aren't case sensitive, only passwords are"
"No, I've tried before with a capital I and it doesn't let me in"
"Well if you have caps lock on then it won't because passwords are case sensitive, I just told you that"
"No, it definately doesn't work with a capital i. Look, I'll try it now." *pause* "Oh, it's let me in using a capital i"
*sigh*
"Well at least you're in"
Anyone got a shotgun?
wait....
Bwahahahahahahaha :D
Anyone got a shotgun?
you probably
Anyone got a shotgun?
Heh, heh, heh. (Anyone remember the Russian's laugh in the original Command & Conquer? That's what I sound like right now.....)
Can you change the font for the login prompt on that user's terminal? Symbol or Wingdings should do nicely. :D
PS - Does your service level agreement require you to only answer the phone after 2ª rings (where in this case ª = 9, or 8, depending on how you count)? ;D
Yes, I really was sad enough to count the rings
I think Feek has a new career as a hand model.
