A couple of months ago I took out a maintenance contract on our Combi boiler which is a few years old and was in good need of a service.

Today British Gas came along and did the pre-inspection thing they do to ensure it's all OK and that they can get parts for it.

I wasn't here, but Mrs. Feek was and she said that the man had a look of horror on his face when he came into the room where the boiler is.

We had it fitted around thirteen years ago so it's well old now and after his inspection he said that the only level of contract they'd issue would be a once a year service jobbie, no maintenance or parts included. I spoke with him and it turns out that it's so scaled up that it'd be impossible to sort. We have a couple of problems with it, one is that the hot water through is quite slow, which I can live with but the other issue is that unless the boiler is delivering heating, we get no hot water. No problem at this time of the year but it's a bit frustrating in the summer having to knock the heating on for a few minutes when we need water.

I asked what the cost would be to get it cleaned up and fixed and he laughed and said it's not worth it at all. We're better off replacing it with a new one. Technology has moved on and the new ones are a lot better and more efficient. He said we should just go with it for as long as possible and then replace it when it breaks.

He wasn't trying to sell me a boiler as he suggested we went to a local place as we'd get a much better price than through British Gas.

His rough estimate was around £1,500 for a new boiler supplied and fitted.

The problem is that I don't have that, I have no way to get my hands on it and (as you'll know from from a previous thread) there's not a chance on earth of me getting credit or a loan of any kind to fund this.

So I'm going into mass save mode as from now. That means no more meets, mini or otherwise, no popping to the pub at lunchtime for a pint, sarnies at work instead of trips to the tenhotandlarge shop and no more toys. Mrs. Feek doesn't want me selling stuff off which I've bought over the years and I'm the same with her so that's not an option.

So if I seem particularly unsociable over the next few months, please don't take it to heart - Don't take it personally when I turn down any invites or just get a bit grumpy when you'd not expect me to.

We'll get over it, this sort of thing happens to people all over the place all the time. I'm just posting because I'm feeling a little down at the moment and, yes, I guess I'm looking for hugs!

Feek, if its any help..

Get the spec of the boiler you need, I know a man who will usually do me trade price.
Our boiler was over a grand plus fitting from a quote I got, spoke to my friend, 700+fitting..
I save 300quid on the cost of the boiler.

edit: have a large hug as well!

Might be worth getting another opinion from an independent plumber. British Gas have a reputation for writing off boilers which they can't be arsed to fix according to our plumber. I know you said he seemed genuine because he suggested you didn't buy one from BG, but still worth a try.

Anyways, sod the boilder have a hug *BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG squeeezy hug* :)

Hey feeky hun... would just like to second a few peoples comments here:

*hugs* seconded

and

get a few other quotes *seconded*

My friend recently had a quote to fit and replace her boiler with some top notch fandangle thingy and it was £800.

I know it's not much cheaper... but every penny helps!

Good luck bubba and big BIG BIG huge HUGS and hope it all gets sorted soon xxx

I don't mean to sound harsh by any stretch, but if you really need it there are always things to sell, like the oPod touch for instance, until a time arrives when you can get toys again. As you said yourself you had an influx of cash recently and splurged it on a touch, that could have went to a disaster/rainy day money. I'm the same and when something goes wrong i have to suck it and sell stuff i want.

It's just bad look thats its come around right now, i feel for you, but you will be able to sell crap and shop around and/or call favours and possibly get it cheaper (like fakey has mentioned) and it'll be fine.

Good luck anyway :)

I'd look at getting a proper firm quote before saving up the £1,500. It might only come in at less than a grand so once you hitthat target you can stop saving for it :)

Are you looking to replace it anyway? Or just saving for the rainy day that it does break down?

I agree with the above about a grand should cover it matey. Trouble is as i well know it may as well be 50k or 50 quid if you haven't got it you just haven't got it.
Sometimes money & the lack of it can be real frustrating, I know your Pain.

That sucks Feeky. Definitely ring around and see what prices others will quote you. They'll often undercut each other for your business so if you play a few off each other you may end up with a much cheaper price.

Have a huge Davey hug though, hope you're not too down for too long about it.

Harsh dude, our boiler at home sounds about as old as yours, luckily the previous owner had left a load of spare parts for it, so whenever it breaks down we have the bits to fix it. I still rip my dad about that, saying there was only that many parts as it needs fixing all the time, but he still refuses to get a new one.

I don't know how you feel about a stranger hugging but...

Not sure if this (http://www.worcester-bosch.co.uk) site is any good but you can spec a boiler and find an installer if you can get the boiler yourself :) Admittedly they'll recommend their products but I'm sure you can find a similar product elsewhere :)

It really is a coincidence but that site recommended a Worcester Greenstar 28i Junior.

Look what was nailed on my wall today....

It's a Worcester Greenstar 28i Junior!

I like Worcester boilers. Mine's illegal due to not being the condensing type (was installed a year or two before those regs), but it's a Worcester Bosch 24CDi, been here getting on for 8 years now, and save a few vibration issues and problems caused by BG engineers its not shown even a hint of a problem.

Touch wood. :)

In short - good choice.

The boiler isn't difficult, it has one control and that's it. Your timer may be difficult, but it ain't the boiler!
