View Full Version : Things I should do before I'm 30
So in just over 9 months I'm 30. I imagine I was conceived around this point, and being adopted often makes me think I was a Xmas party accident. I'm here anyway so I should tell the world just how good an accident I am. Of course it doesn't help that I've been scared of people most of my life and haven't actually done anything with my 20's. So I figure 2008, last 9 months I should be doing things to make up for that. I've been thinking of going crazy and getting a tattoo, but then as I'm soooo picky I can't think of anything I could live with. Maybe something in Japanese, not the local restaurant menu :p I'm just feeling like to hell with everything. To hell with fear. I need to make some mistakes. If I celebrate my 30th by still living at home with my parents, I don't think theres any point in a 31st. If it really comes to it I'll fly off to Amsterdam, but ideally I want to have moved out.
So far my list is...
Get more clients
Move out
Get gf
Get book published
Do exhibition
Lose at least some weight (not all, just enough to be proud of)
I need suggestions of things that I should attempt before I'm 30. So at least I can say I've done something with my 20's. So far all I have is a degree I don't use, a photography career and 2 sick parents to care for. I've been too adult, too responsible. I don't mean I plan to get completely wasted as I'd prefer to have good memories of things. I can get drunk alone at home any day of the week. So... scare me :D
get your johnsone pierced.
Yeah I've heard about that and no :p Its useless enough right now. It doesn't need metal in it :)
Do something that involves flight, or falling from flight.
Help to raise monies for charity :)

Hmm interesting idea. Wonder what form of sponsored photo thing I could do.
Well you said losing weight - how about training and running a marathon for some charity?

I like this one.
Could also do some sort of voluntary work for a bit too...not sure what though...oh my friend (she's into photography) she took some shots of a physically handicapped kids party the other week... maybe something like that?

Try something new :)
We all know how much you love your photos and photography, but try branching out into unknown territory :)

I was thinking the other night that 1 thing I'd love to do before I die is see the Northern Lights in person - maybe you could do that before you're 30? :)
Organise a surprise for someone! :D

To aid the weight loss, etc you could always take up a new sport. Something different! When I finally get my arse into gear and get back into fencing you're welcome to join me.

Interesting idea. Document a charity or something.

Haha. Well Paula will testify that I managed that already. I really really eat very little so everything is new food :) I've already tried Salmon and sweetcorn this month.

Yeah I agree. I often feel thats all I am. Guy with a camera. Take that away and theres nothing to me. However, having been to meets i am starting to feel that I can enjoy life without having to bake potatoes.

Actually thats way better than Amsterdam. God I'd love to see that. 30th birthday in Iceland perhaps.

Fencing sounds kinda cool. I always liked the idea of martial arts, but when I did it as a kid I found it annoying that I spent a few hours being beaten up so quit. But fencing sounds interesting. Something really different. Plus I get to pretend I'm a jedi ;)

It is a great laugh, you'd probably want to do saber if you do. It's more fun and you get to whack people really hard. I think I have photos of my bruises at home from a couple of years back they looked very impressive ;D
If you want I'll give you a shout when I've sorted my insurance and found a club in town. I think there are a couple but I'll let you know.
Guy with a camera. Take that away and theres nothing to me.
Dont talk crap! The same would be true if you were a miserable sod with no personality, I dont think you have that problem Pete :) You're one of the nicest guys I know!!!!
Ooooh oooooh, Ive got another idea! Let someone take a photo of you. Not just a snapshot, but a photo as good as yours ;) I think that will be a breakthrough :)

Nah.., you were the waiter on sunday :p ;)

Ty :) That does seem like an interesting idea. Being comfortable enough on the other side of the camera for someone to take a good photo of me. I know how hard that is for people.

Haha shush :p

I'd love to learn how to fly, to face that fear. Expensive though?

Just have a trial lesson to get it done. They'll let you fly (for a bit).

The words to that song made me stop and think about photography a bit, and how much time I was spending hiding behind a camera lens rather than participating. I'm not all that much of a photographer really, but it was getting to a silly stage when I would never go out without mine.
These days I use a bit more judgement and only take my camera out for specific purposes, like going to the zoo or whatever.
That said, there is a huge difference between thee and me. My camera is purely for fun and I'm not an artist. My livelihood is not dependant on the photos I take :)

Seen them
How about a ride in a hot air balloon, that's something I've always wanted to do but never got round to - yet.
Or, go up in a glider - my Dad did it on his fiftieth and had the time of his life.

My camera has taken me to so many new places, its been great. But its my camera taking me there and I watch events through it. I've been to gigs, to events, to galleries, to Toronto to get photos. It drives me, gets me out the house. There are days when I accept the things I've lost along the way. That its just the price I pay to do what I do. There are days when I'm ok about giving everything up for art. But then theres days when I'm not. Its easy to hide in my work. Its quite funny though. My photography philosophy is to always get the shot. To go that bit further and get something no-one else will get. To continually push myself. I have a little mascot on my camera, Ichigo from Bleach. He's there to remind me that no matter what I can cut through it and get good photos. Always find that hard to apply to life though :) Anyway, far too emo there :D I will always have my camera with me to make me do things I wouldn't.
eat indian food - or at least venture into an Indian Restaurant. Preferably before i'm 33, which is also, handily, before you're 30 ;)
We can chat about this over chocolate, I have some ideas for you. :D For starters you could come and join the gym near my work and we could get fit together. I'm considering changing gyms to be closer to work rather than home and the Rad is doing some great offers atm. Depends on how often you're over this end though.
If you wanted to do something for charity - depends what kind of charity. I know the dog rescue people that I used to volunteer for were wanting someone to take photos of peoples dogs (and people with their dogs) and charging them around £5-10 each. Half to the photographer, half to the charity. You'd be amazed how many people were up for that. I could give you more details if you're interested :)
I can't afford the gym right now. I have a healthy cycling route that is doing things. But the dog rescue thing sounds lovely. I'd really like to help with that. I love dogs and I know how much a photo of a pet can mean to someone.
haha sure :) As long as they're not faster than my hamster I'll be fine :D

as for tattoos, why not a roll of film - or a camera :D
nah he wants one of the apple ;)

Hmmm it feels a bit... dunno... cheap? Cliched. I love photography, not so much the kit. I think if I got a tattoo it would have to be something meaningful. haha f/1 on the top of my arm. :D

Haha. Classic power logo.

I've got a few ideas, but I'd rather discuss them off forum because well I'm not sure you'd be comfortable with me airing some stuff.
Some stuff i will suggest - If you would like to learn to fly next time you are up if the weather is good i will see if dad will take us through to Carlisle where the plane is and get someone to take you up, if you're good you might even get a shot of the controls.
Getting a tattoo, don't do it unless you are sure its what you want.
Eating new things, you are doing so well, i was so proud of you trying new things while you stayed here. You need to keep it up. Plus improving your diet will help you lose weight.
As for gaining a little independence, we're going to Canada! It's going to rock so ****ing hard. We've talked about other ways of gaining a bit more other than holidays.
I'm behind you 100% and you know that i will be standing there poking you in the back, not letting you give up.
Rikki i was explaining the benefits of genital piercing on guys at the weekend, they don't seem convinced.

Cool. Its weird that I'm ok flying but I can't manage a flight of stairs. I think it would be exciting flying for real. I love flight sims.

100% agree. I think I'm feeling that I need to just do something unexpected of me. Shock my parents, my sister etc. Just to say "Yer well, its about ****ing time I did this." So yeah I can't quite think of anything. Silly Japanese words but they're probably not going to be with me for life. I'm in awe of anyone who can make that decision, like yours. To know you want it that much, that you'll always love it.

:D Yeah, food. I'll get there.

:D 8hrs away from any responsability. I so love that concept.

Not in the slightest. Thats my poking stick. I poke things, things don't poke it.
I can understand you want to escape, but don't go to Canada because you want to escape. Go because you want to go and because Canada rocks, and most of all enjoy yourself. Also, as a suggestion, take the camera of course but maybe forget about photography for a day or two while out there and see where that takes you - and I do mean forget - no regrets over missed shots. :)
PS - Random fact. Toronto has a rather large St. Patrick's day parade. Not as big as NY but still very big. Dunno when you're going so this information may or may not be useful. :)

Erm, we're going on holiday...
I'll be dragging him around malls and getting excited about Canada things, i'm already insanely excited about it.
Yeah, I get that of course, but from carrying a camera everywhere myself I've discovered that I have missed stuff if I'm worried more about the photography than just enjoying the moment, so yes, sometimes I do now leave the camera behind even on holiday - particularly if I'm just staying local or going to an area I've already been with camera.

If Edinburgh was anything to go by i think he'll be just fine about taking an actual proper break (seems the camera isn't surgically attached after all) :)
I'd travel as much as possible I think :) So many places I'd love to see before I'm 30. I'd want to go more obscure places than regular touristy places.
I'm a bit strange though, I realllllllllllllllly want to go to Iraq one day. Hoping eventually the problems there will die down. And hopefully by then they won't have destroyed all the amazing architecture there either :p
I'm not sure how much you've travelled though so not sure how relevant it is for you. :)
I dont "get" the whole premise of needing to have done something by such a birthday. You've acknowledged you want to inject some pace into the proceedings so just get it done rather than stressing about doing it all before you hit an irrelevant number.
Stop being scared of the outcome of things and just do it. I understand you have to look after your parents and things like that but you shouldn't let that stand in the way of enjoying your life! Your photography gives you a far more flexible life than most people have so use that to your advantage!

Oh I'm not going to escape. It was an added bonus while I was there last time. Really nice feeling of just being me with no baggage. I could just be me. As for ditching the camera, um maybe not. I can take less kit and I can enjoy the moment without needing to take a photo. I found that in Edinburgh. It was nice to just hang out, walk around and not take photos. Then it snowed... *snap snap snap* :D

Photography for me is as natural as breathing so I don't really miss things. I just annoy people for always wanting to get that last shot.

Yeah I'd like to travel more. Revisit Toronto, Edinburgh. See Northern Lights. Goto Amsterdam. Iraq isn't a weird place to go compared to say Kuwait and breaking into military installations as my mate does. She's.... different :D

It shouldn't be needed, but saying I have to do it before September should in theory give me an extra kick.

Aye, I agree and I'm getting there :) 2 years ago I wouldn't randomly decide to goto opposite ends of the country to visit friends, or decided to do a completely nude photoshoot as I am at the weekend or take photos of strangers on the street. I just have to remember to ignore the voice in my head.
I'm sure you'll look fantastic in the buff Pete ;)
Haha. You'd think the amount of times I've said that and people have said what you said back I'd have learnt. But nooooooo :p
Do a skydive!!!
Go swimming with sharks. Or dolphins. Or go on a whale spotting trip. All three are really a lot more exciting that you'd think. :) And with your photography skills it would probably make it even better.
Go on a safari....
Go somewhere totally random, like Thailand, or Kenya or something like that...
Dolphins. I forgot about Dolphins. Definitely do that - I'm probably the least confident person you'll find in water (save someone with a phobia) but even I managed it. :)
