Hello hello!

I am FAR too excited at the moment! Picky and I have been discussing a while whether or not to get a puppy daaawg! After much thought and consideration and looking into finances and things we're pretty much 100% certain we can have one and give it a superb home!

Looked at a litter this morning of Border Collie Labrador cross... and they were GORGEOUS! We have one on "reserve" at the moment and well... YAY! If we do get it, we should have it within a week so need to get all the equipment to be prepared! EXCITING!

The only qualm we have at the moment is how long you can leave a puppy at home alone.

According to a number of internet webbys it's normally 1 hour plus an hour per how many months old they are (so 1 month old would mean 2 hours, 2 month old 3 hours etc). Obviously it all depends on the puppy dawg but what do you people think?

Work wise I can wangle shifts which would mean she would be alone for only an hour or two tops (that would start in 2 weeks time). Up until then, we're both around 24/7 to help her settle in! She's 5 and a bit weeks now... so by the time work comes about she'll be nearing 8 weeks!

I'm very excited! I miss not having a dog about in the house and know it's going to be super hard work training and things... but we've thought it through and through and it just seems right!

YAAAAAAAY! Will post piccies when we get them! :D

Aww :) I love doggys :)

Mics mother got a Golden Retriever puppy as a retirement gift from her boss. He is 6-7 months old can can't be left alone for an hour let alone longer before he starts destroying the place...well...destroying it more then he already has.

Oooh exciting :) I love dogs although never been able to own one.

I'm so excited! She's GORGEOUS! Completely black other than a wee white spot on her back right paw and a little white tuft on her chest, short haired, playful but slightly timid too (a couple of the other dogs were mental and grappling with Pickys shoe laces and coat whilst the others were a bit too scared to come play... figured she was the perfect inbetween!) and and and and

Well she's a stunner. The Mother was so gorgeous too - working dog, very small collie but snuggly and loving too! She didn't stay too long with us and the pups though as the pups were doing their best to suckle and I think the teeth are starting to get to her! She did give me a welcoming snog though which was nice!

The Father is a working labrador from a farm down! They were both nawty and got jiggy when both the owners weren't looking! He's short haired, nice temperament apparently and has lots of grand children to play with! We didn't get to see him which is sad but I'm pretty sure the lady farmer was very trustable!

EEEEE! Am excited! Must disappear though as have work now - going to be bouncing around with excitement me! :D :D :D

Awww I'd love a doggy.

Ideally they shouldn't be left at all especially when they are a puppy but I've always been able to leave mine for long periods.

Would 2 hours be considered too long though (at 8 - 10 weeks old)?

vix

With our family dog, we left her for four when she was a puppy. She totally wracked the kitchen. We had to buy a new carpet, she pulled things out of the cupboards and ate them - and I mean shoes and washing powder.

We ended up making a pen for her unser the stairs. She was fine in there and got used to knowing when we were going out, and would sit in it. She knew it was her space. Sounds a little cruel to keep them penned up but it wasn't for hours on end, and much more beneficial so she didn't eat the house!!!

If you can have some kind of area for the dog, then I wouldn't say 2 hours was long. I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving one to roam the house for that long. Also be prepared that a puupy can't and wont hold wees and poos for that long so be prepared to clean up when you get back. I had a dog that was never house trained, and you can buy these big 'nappies' that sit on the floor. They have stuff in them so that your dog knows to go on it, and it's generally nicer than cleaning it straight off the floor. They are called puppy training pads or something, Pets at Home sell them.

If you leave it too long you'll know it as soon as you get home :p With all our dogs we simply tried and tested it all, that way we knew how long they could all be left for individually rather than a set time. :) I would recommend taking it to doggy training classes though, it'll give you more control and really does make a difference from my experience.

YAY for a puppy though :D Look forward to pics!

I can't recommend getting the new pupster a pen highly enough! It makes house training super easy, it'll save your house and it'll give puppy somewhere safe and secure to be when you aren't there. Feed in it etc when they are tiny and it becomes their 'safe place'. Hamish used to settle immediatley he was put in there after a very short period of time :)

Oscar and Bella were both 'crated' when tiny and it made a lot of difference to their behaviour. Some people (usually ones without dogs) will say 'crating' is evil, however all the dogs I know who have had a crate are very well behaved and tend to settle very easily to a bed when you remove the crate later.

Just been looking at http://www.petstore.uk.com/rosewood_dog_cages.cfm?startrow=7
Rosewood Dog Cage [L]
Would fit nicely under the stairs. Could go for the 41" model, but I think 36" is enough...

Its not a case of bigger is better, you want a crate which is large enough for the dog to stand and turn but not to mess in one place and be able to move to avoid it. Have a nose that that link I posted and search on crating. When its a pup you'll also want to physically reduce the floor area of the crate.

I would echo what has been said though a lab/ collie is going to need a hell of a lot of exercise and contact. My parents did a heck of a lot of research before they chose the breed of their dogs to make sure they were suited to their lifestyle, we even went to Crufts specifically to visit the Discover Dogs stands and meet various owners and their animals, I would highly recommend it.

Matt,
Can the crate be moved during the day/night? or does it need to remain in one space? Only, it would fit under the stairs, but thats not in a "people place" :/

Hello hello!

After having dogs in my family all my life I feel happy enough knowing how much care and attention they need :) The crate idea - although made me cringe at first as we've never used it in the family - after much reading, seems to make sense!

As for labs and collies... my old next door neighbour used to breed labs and they were nutty as! Such a nice temperament though! Collies - I have to admit I don't know a great deal about them but upon research and through common sense I figured they'd be a lively breed! To be honest - a lively and active dog is what I am certainly looking for so I think it's a big YAY! :D

Thank you all for your advice, especially on crate training! Very very helpful! I have spoken to work and am going to hand in a sheet tomorrow saying when I am available to work in the new year and will stipulate times which would mean the puppy would be left for no longer than 2 hours max (most probably 1).

Will post more when we know more! Thanks muchly people! Loving reading all the stuff and all about training - really would like to put it into practice.

I'd not be too worried about the crate being in a 'people' place Pickers. It should be his space and his alone, he's left alone when he's in there, he's fed in there, somewhere he feels 100% secure. I'm sure if you're home he won't be in there anyway :) It's his haven

Absolutely, Oscar and Bella's crates were under the stairs away from people and they were just fine :)

Aww Trio had her second puddle! It was too quick for us to be able to get her outside sadly! She was exploring the lounge for the first time so figured her sniffing was just to take in smells! Whoopsie!

Bless her though, once outside she went crazy - bounded everywhere - Daddy got kisses, Mummy got high fived and so no wee wee achieved there!

Once again, knackered herself out now! She was bounding around and Picky was centre of the lounge sat crossed legged on the phone to his Dad when she stumbled towards him, clambered onto his lap and zonked out!

Sleepy time for next couple of hours!

Not eaten fud yet though! She's so sweet! Even though she wee weed on my carpet! It was a cute small wee wee! Awwww!

Aww. All tired now!

Will - I don't reckon we'll get her trained elsewhere... we've always trained our puppy dawgs ourselves and it seems to go well! (Though saying that, our German Shepherd puppy,Sofie, was helped to train by a police dog trainer! Was rather funny actually, he got my Ma and Sofie in a big field with lots of walkers and said to my Mum:

Alan: "With a dog, you should try to only use one word commands such as "come" and "sit" ok?"
Ma: "Yup!"
Alan: "Right lets get Sofie to come to us." *marches across field with Ma whilst Sofies plonked in the back of the van"
Alan: "COME....... COME SOFIE......... COME............ SOFIE COME.....COME......COME SOFIE"
*Ma smiles*
*Sofie sits in van not budging*
Alan: "Okay, what do you normally say to get her to come?"
Ma *shouting in a high pitch voice*: "SooOOoofiiieeee, CoooOOOMe to MUuuUMMmmY!"
*Sofie bounds across the field wagging*
Alan: "If you think I'm going to stand in a middle of a public field and shout that.... it's not going to happen!"

Took Alan a good few days to train her out of "come to mummy"! Though inevitably, my Ma continued to say it!

This is Trio playing "Boundy boundy boundy!"

http://roger.picton.googlepages.com/trio8.jpg

I jiggle around and bound out into the kitchen.... then bound back into the lounge like I'm riding some crazy horse, whilst calling "BooounnNNnnDyy BoooUUUunnNDY BboooOOOuuUUUnnDy!"! Trio loves it! She bounds along behind me..... then turns and gets chased into the lounge! It absolutely zonks her out though! (as well as me... spesh after dinner!)

OMG.... I feel so bad....

Pickers and I became distracted when our kettle decided to boil continuously for a few minutes and not stop, causing condensation all under our kitchen units and swelling the corner of the doors. During distraction, which happened to be after play time with puppy, Trio wee'd and poopidoopied in the lounge and hallway (eak!)

Obviously didn't tell her off as we didn't catch her doing it, but just cleaned it up nice and quietly.

Pickers left to sainsburys to purchase some carpet stain remover (we currently only have vanish prewash spray and dettol!) but upon leaving said "this room smells of both dettol and poo!"

Sooo... I went an fetched ther air freshner sprayer thingy, followed by a bounding puppy, and sprayed it in the lounge.....

Puppys face was heart breaking... she immediately cowered away, which I didn't notice until I was back in the kitchen. Scrambling up me she shook and stared at the hallway, sniffing like mad. Upon carrying her to her bed in the lounge she continued to shake and clambered up me, hiding in my armpit :(

I feel so bad... I didn't realise the weird new smell and spray would scare her so much :(

Bad me..... :'(

Bit of advice required with wee little Trio!

At night time, Trio has been sleeping in her bed next to our bed (my side). Her routine currently is at about 2:30am she will paw me in the face, meaning WEE WEE TIME NOW PLEASE, and I will scoop her up and whisk her all sleepy headed into the garden where we do the wee wees. This will then happen again at around 5:00 am - 6:30am.

Obviously this is slightly knackering for me, although I don't really mind. I will try and get about 20mins odd sleep in the morning when she zonks after play time. Thing is, a number of people have said this isn't a good plan and long term we're a bit concerned how she will be.

Do we... continue like we do and hope she starts doing all nighters and is fine OR put her in the kitchen with some news paper by the back door and leave her to it?

Pickers doggys have always lived in his folks room and they seem to be fine by it, whereas mine have always been closed in the kitchen (I do recall the puppy dawgs being very very whingy and cry lots at night).

We've only had her a handful of nights now so I don't think a change in the routine would be that bad, but would have to be done sooner rather than later.

Where have you all put your dogs at night time? What would you recommend? I know a few people have said to me we're mad and Picky has been told today that she could become dominating if she is in our room (though judging by her current temperament I wouldn't say that was so)

Ideas?!

*I would be sad at her crying :( But then... I've done it before... Would she feel abandoned? :(*

Will

From the dogs our family has had, they whinge and whine a bit, but once they get used to sleeping elsewhere they get on with it, they know when bed time is. It makes them even more excited to see you in the morning. Then on occasions they would be allowed to sleep wherever they wanted - though after time they'd just go to "their" part of the house/dog house as that was their domain. I think now's the right time to do it though.

It'll be better for the dog and you in the long run.

My grandparents Lab was always kept in the kitchen overnight with paper down. I can still recall the morning results when I was upstairs and the dog 'escaped' - earthquake followed by being jumped on and licked to death. ;D

Ive never had any of our dogs in my room at night, I'm such a light sleeper when they fidget about I wake up.

The only way her bladder will be able to last the night is to train it to last the night. At the moment she doesnt need to hang on, when she wants to go, she gets let out. Thats great, but I can see this becoming a long term routine. I'd try in the kitchen with some paper by the back door (and expect her to use it) and after a week or two put the paper outside. I made the mistake with Hamish of leaving the paper down for ages thinking he'd never be clean. Truth was he went on the paper at night because he thought he was allowed to (which he was). As soon as I put the paper outside he was clean at night.

WHY ARE WE SUCH SUCKERS!!!!

She's sooo cute! She's ADORABLE and so happy and when she yawns she makes a little squeek and it's BEAUTIFUL!

Even when she farts she's cute!!

In my brain... in my head... she should be downstairs because:
a) Domineering problems. She might feel on parr with us both if in the bedroom.... I don't really want this.
b) Sleeping. I am a zombie at the moment and to make matters worse I have a cold. Her downstairs would mean better sleeping (albeit she'll whine and I will stay awake and cry my eyes out)
c) Children. When we have kids in the future I don't want her to be above them (relates to a) ) We will be up and down all night and it's not fair on her or us.
D) Smelliness/Malting. Bedroom won't smell of dog nor be covered in hair (not that this matters as it just smells of pickys arse farts and is covered in his belly button and toe fluff.)

BUUUT SHE'S SO CUTTTTTTE!

We're worried because:

a) We don't want her to feel abandoned. Which she will for atleast the first few nights. I feel horrible.
b) No protection from burglars Picky says. Stupid boy, she wasn't bought for a guard dog and he doesn't want to face nawty people breaking into the house! Passing the buck me thinks!
c) I will cry. Lots. Cos I a big muff.

Aww she just squeeked and is suckling her towel.

AWW.

Oh dear God I feel awful :(

Thing is, Picky said it would be easy to allow her back upstairs once she's toilet trained and allowed to take the stairs on her own (or have the freedom of the house, but her bed would still be in the kitchen).... but the other way round (ie her staying in the bedroom) would be impossible.

Also, because we're leaving her at night in the kitchen we thought it might make her better at understanding when we leave her in the day eventually. Thing is, Picky is concerned she will be double abandoned (both at night and in the day) if we were to leave her!

I FEEL EVIL!

Agreed - if you respond to every squeak and whine doggy will be boss and not you. That's not good and no matter what your heart may say you simply can't become succor to that. Doing this now will save you an awful lot of pain and heartache later.

PS - I'd absolutely adore a doggy of my own but with the random hours I work it'd be so unfair, so I'm going to have to suck it up and just be extremely jealous. :(

I just wanted to say a big thank you to the posts and also an even BIGGER thank you to Pebbles for putting up with me ringing her in floods of tears!

I literally cried myself to sleep and throughout the night too. When Trio wasn't whining, I was worried she had hurt herself, when she was whining, she was battling the door and howling and it broke my heart.

I have never felt so bad before in my life and have never cried so much before either! It was uncontrollable sobbing too! Poor Pickers chest was drowned in tears!

I think we'll be doing it again tonight, but once again, I shall imagine I will cry uber amounts!

*am knackered.... more so than when I was taking her out at 2:30am then 6am*

Oh yes, and saying that, those were the times she whined. Up until 12midnight, again at 2:30 for half hour then again around 6am.

No puddles or poo as such - a bit of a wee when we went into the kitchen, but straight outside for her so not much.

Oh... oh I think she's falling asleep... going to try and grab 40winks whilst I have the opportunity!

Thank you again so so much... wubs xx

If you don't do this Pheebs she will be very difficult when she is older, possibly to an amount you can't live with. This really is all for the best.
I remember when my sister appeared at our house for the first time with Coal, he was so tiny and sweet and we fussed him so badly but my dad was always slightly standoffish about it, not patting him until he wanted to and the like. Now Coal knows dad is in change, he is the only person Coal will not jump up at when he first meets them, he sits and waits until he is told to come over for a pat.
Cruel to be kind is necessary when training a puppy, my sister has another dog Mia and she is a rescue dog, she has never been trained properly and although she is toilet trained her basic commands are awful. We can't let her off the lead unless the park is empty as she doesn't come back a lot of the time until she feels like it and never has her muzzle off whilst on a walk since the time she tried to eat a duck. She is slowly getting better through a lot of hard work but she is a difficult dog.

Well, I am proud to say no tears for me last night :D She cried for about 15-20mins tops and then again at 2:30 (or it could have been 3:30) for 15-20mins and then again when she heard us get up!

So... massive improvement! I know it's for the best and I knew I had enough will power to stay upstairs, I just couldn't help but to ball my eyes out at her wailing on the first night :)

She's 10weeks today *YAY* and in the past 10 days we've had her she has now learnt...

*come* (though sometimes she chooses not to hear this)
*sit* (brilliant at this... just does it at all the right points without even being asked)
*down* (lie down this is... still a little shaky but improving everyday)
*go fetch* (but sometimes she gets distracted enroute by shiny objects)
*no*(obvious command but 80% of the time she obeys)
*leave* (as above... is actually really good at this!)
*gentle* (when taking toys/treats.... getting her to gently mouth as opposed to snatch)
*kisses* (sounds silly but it stops her from nipping so much - instead she licks us :D )
Obviously we will keep these up everyday, but she's still needing to learn *stay*... she just doesn't get that one! She also needs to learn that pulling buds off my plants is nawty! Very very nawty!

Trying to get her pooing in one place now as currently she poos wherever tickles her fancy (outdoors though thankfully!). This, is not as easy as I hoped. Boo!

Yay for the improvements though! She's ace and I heart her lots! :D

Aww Kitten, hope she is ok. Mimi has a really sensitive tummy, if she eats something that doesn't agree with her (it can be anything even things she is fine with at other times) she is sick badly.

Pheebs trying to get her to poop in one place is going to be very difficult, dogs just don't do that kind of thing normally. Also may cause problems if she is on a walk and thinks she can only poop in that one place. You've done really well training her I'm pleased she is coming along so quickly.

Very true, our family dog would never wee or poo on a walk but would go straight in the garden on our return!

Both mine used to do it anywhere :(

Awww no is Sally alright? What have the vets said? Hope she gets well soondsbhj;.'?

(that last bit was trio stomping on the keyboard - I think she was saying "get well soon" in doggy language!)

*hugs for Sally*

Blackstar - all of my previous doggies have always pooped in a specific area in the garden (ie on the stones to the side of the house/by the garage) and they've all been fine :) (when I say specific, it's a reasonably large area they had to do it on but an obvious area if you know what I mean. We've always been lucky to have quite reasonably sized gardens on different levels so it was kinda easy to make an area their domain :)) I obviously don't want to give her a complex but if she poopies in one area then I will reward her more so than others! She's really good and if you say to her "Do a wee wee" she will either wee wee or poo poo if she needs to, so I tend to prompt her in a certain area! I'm sure she'll do fine!

At the moment she's being a bit of a terror - running up the stairs when she knows she's not allowed to and is pulling things off the sofa and chewing them.

This all tends to happen when I'm not playing with her and am either making lunch/brekky/cuppa or trying to do 10mins worth of work. She gets played with a lot - I try and run around a lot in the garden and play fetch and things - but I'm trying my best to teach her that I will need me time too so I can do work! She's got a nice handful of toys so I figured she would be happy to play for 5-10mins by herself... but noooo she likes to be nawty and get attention!

Tempted to ignore her if she runs upstairs now - all the doors are shut up there so it's not like she'll get into any nawtyness!

Aww she's currently picking up fluff from our carpet ;D At this rate I will be able to make my hoover redundant!

I had THE biggest scare in my life with Trio today...

Took her for a walk this morning and decided to do some off lead training (so throwing sticks, making her come/stay/sit/fetch etc).

I decided to lob a stick up a small incline and Trio bounded after it, grabbed it but so it was straight (as in ... length ways), turned around and started to trot back down.

I could see what was going to happen... and low and behold she trips, the stick gets caught on the ground and shoved down her throat.

I've never heard her yelp like she did... she managed to drop it but then she started choking and spluttering. I ran up to her and whacked her hard on the back and she threw up some stick bits but continued to choke.

I just didn't know what to do. I was all prepared to scoop her into my arms and run like mental round to the vets... but she calmed down and eventually was breathing fine, albeit shaking like mad.

A passerby came running up too to see if they could help Trio was choking so much :'(

It was horrid. I will never EVER throw a stick for her again. I normally take a toy out but forgot to this morning. Feel so horrible.

She's been playing since and has had some lunch and been really boundy. I managed to check the back of her mouth and as far as I could see there are no cuts/swelling. Even still, every so often she sounds a bit wheezy. I don't know whether it's me being paranoid as I am very aware of her every waking move and breath at the moment...

... dunno. Will wait and see what Picky thinks but I could be tempted to take her to the vets just to make sure she hasn't hurt her throat.

*I R a bad mum :(*

It all started so well too! She's been pulling a fair bit when on the lead and today she happily trotted alongside me without any problems.

Boo to me :(

*hugs Trio*

I tried to think of a nice way of saying this....but I'm better at being blunt :p

She's a dog, she'll chase sticks and whilst out playing will sometimes get hurt. That's what dogs do. I know it's not nice seeing an animal in pain, especially when it's your pet, but she'll recover and she'll be fine. Don't stop throwing sticks for her.

Daz
15-02-2008, 15:07
Don't stop throwing sticks for her.
Agree with the rest of it but not that I'm afraid.

I knew someone who lost a dog to it - threw an (unfortunately pointy) stick, dog ran after it, and it ended up in the dogs neck. After hearing that none of our dogs have had sticks thrown for them, just toys. Doesn't take anything away from the dog and they're less likely to get hurt.

I can understand people doing it but after that our folks threatened us with pain of death if we ever threw sticks.

[edit]Sorry if that comes across as scaremongering Pheebs, I didnt mean it to be :) There'll be plenty of dogs out there safely playing with sticks, and accidents will always happen in life.

I used to swear that our old dog Ben would always run himself to death. He was an old man, but he would always chase his ball, no matter how many times you threw it or how far. Sometimes he's quite obviously be completely shattered and he'd just chase anything for the hell of it.

Tough as old boots he was. Retired sheep dog :)

My sisters dogs don't do sticks, they have branches about 3ft long and 7 inches in diameter they run after (from the log pile we had after chopping down a tree, no pointy ends) and strip the bark off. Anything smaller than that and they aren't interested.

I'd say lay off the sticks too tbh, its safer not to give them things that splinter.

This week Oscar my parent's apricot poodle almost died because he got a needle stuck into the base of his tongue, he was off his food about a week ago and the local vet diagnosed tonsillitis and gave him antibiotics. He was OK for a while but still in discomfort when eating and as soon as he was off the anti-b's he got ill again refusing to eat or drink. This time the vet x-rayed him and found a needle in the base of his tongue, as you know a dog tongue is a long muscle and it goes a long way down the back of the throat. The local vet tried to get it out but failed and they thought they would have to let him go, in a last ditch attempt to save him the vet suggested the animal hospital in bristol and yesterday he was operated on by a professor no less!

He seems to be OK now but its cost a fortune and a lot of grief so I would recommend trying to minimise risky situations. Desmo is right you can't wrap them up in cotton wool but I'd avoid giving a dog anything which might splinter and I'd also keep small sharp objects out of the way as much as possible :)

In my opinion, she is a modern miracle. The first example of a supposedly advanced life form that doesn't have a brain..! She's getting on a bit now, 10 people years, and yet she still barks at the rain. Little up date on the Trio!

Training wise... she is doing SUPERBLY!

We decided to take her along to puppy classes to get her used to socialising (as previously she's completely ignored us and our commands around other dogs) but have learned a fair bit from it! Just little tips on commands and using the clicker *click and reward*... it's amazing!

She has improved enormously. Her recall is brilliant - still a little shakey when distracted but so so much better. Sit and down and everything like that is perfect. Her jumping up at people is 100% better too! She doesn't jump up at me much now (if at all) and Picky... still does a little with visitors but I think some of that is because they bend down and give her attention - which means she jumps up!

Accidents wise... up til this week it's been dry and dandy completely. She has probably had one wee wee accident prior to this week over months!

However.

Two days ago I was playing with her in the garden and when finished I asked her if she wanted a wee wee and she just trotted in doors. Fair enough.

I then go upstairs, strip the bed and plonk the duvet on the floor whilst putting on the mattress undersheet. Trio. Lovely gorgeous, Trio, trots on in, climbs on top of the duvet, squats and wees the BIGGEST wee in history.

Our king sized feather winter thick duvet.... just covered... in pee. Boo.

So yeh that had to go to the dry cleaners.

That... was nothing though. Yesterday, Trio did a poo at 10am and then no more for the WHOLE day (despite taking her outside, playing with her, allowing her time to sniff, telling her to do wee wee. Nothing). She went to puppy class and home, had opportunities to poo again. Nothing. Soooo we put her to bed.

This morning... the kitchen floor was just COVERED in liquidated poo. I just didn't know where to start or how to. She, luckily, hadn't trod in any of it so it was just piles (or puddles rather) of it.

Poor girl. I don't know whether it's because we've changed her diet (she's now half wet and half dry) and her puppy tummy is struggling to adjust... but it's been a week of poorly poos. :(

Will rehydrate her today and feed her only dry with a small smidgey bit of wet in and see how she gets on.

Poor baby.

She's led in a sunspot now though quite content! :)

I have to go now to restock up on dettol, kitchen roll and marigolds. :)

Our puppy dog is pawly (hah! see what I did there!)

Heh, I shouldn't be joshing though as the poor baby has to have an xray tomorrow and go under anesthetic and all that gumph :(

Since getting back from Cyprus... and possibly the odd occassion prior to Cyprus she seems to sometimes get a limp out walking. This weekend whilst I was away Picky threw her ball a couple of times and she went to run after it and then kinda hobbled, turned around and hobbled back :( She then made wincey noises when she jumped off a step and even though she was jogging along fine she whimpered all the way in.

I witnessed it this morning too - she kinda collapsed when she ran after a ball I threw (not far as I was aware of the above but wanted to see if there was any improvement/whether it was a one off thing).

Vets tried to examine her but when she was on the table she went all rigid and shakey (she hates heights). He then got her to walk up and down outside where she was seen to "bunny hop". This is when he queried a loose hip joint (the ball joint loose in the hip rather...) and said he wanted to xray to be certain.

Boo.

I so hope it's not. She's not herself at the moment as it is with her being in season for the first time. Poor lil lady.

She's hoooooooooome!

Walking like a drunkard and whining lots (I think she's not best pleased with us at the moment!)

From what I understand... she has a hip problem. As above her joint is a little loose BUT luckily it's been caught earlier and can be "fixed".

We've pretty much been told walkies is now a 5 min jobby on the lead, gradually building up to 10 mins in the next couple of weeks. Thereafter it's a steady build too until we eventually hit 30 - 40mins (still on lead) until she's much older. Diets been changed, no jumping up at all and no stairs.

Poor baby :( We will conquer it though and she will get better! So sad and completely gutted for her that she has to be suffering from this. :(

But YAY she's home... even if she doesn't like us and isn't quite with it... I'm muchos happy :)

Aww she's being all weird... she won't lie down... and is just wondering around whining. You can play with her but she is a bit dosey and confused... she wags for a moment and then kinda gets confused then wonders off and whines!

:( poor baby!

If only she'd zonk for half an hour she'd be fine!

Mel

yeah drugs do funny things to puppies. she'll lay down eventually and probably be down for a while

She's probably scared to go to sleep as last time she did she woke up in pain. She'll go eventually when she can't stay awake any longer.

At least you caught this hip problem early too, could have been terrible later.

I agree with Mel and Vix, both will effect her for a while, they did with my cat, it was horrible seeing him so vulnerable and not his normal self, but it will get better hun.

Now I know what it's like to come out of anaesthetic, I can understand what they are feeling too, I didn't have a clue where I was or what had happened when I first 'woke up', imagine being an animal and have that happen :/

When Goggles had her bits out, she was all dopey, but she tried to do her normal jump into the sink, and failed miserably. She was ever so confused.

*hugs to Trio

When I came out from under mine the last time I was really very grumpy and irritable with the nurses apparently. I have no recollection of it but my mum was there. I kept trying to pull the oxygen tube out of my nose and pushing the nurses away when they tried to stop me.

She has whined... constantly... since getting her home.

We decided to have her sleep in the bedroom last night too to see if that helped settle her.

All night she whined.

I lie... she probably got about 2 hours sleep (intermittent). I got up about 3 times to take her to the garden (she had a poorly tum before going to bed so figured it could be that...) but yeh!

*going slightly insane and a bit sad as I just don't know what to do to make her feel better* :(

We've had dogs that have been knocked sideways for a couple of days after this sort of thing and others that have slept it off and been fine within a few hours.

If in doubt give the Vet a call. I'm sure she'll be fine though.

I don't think there is anything you can do apart from what you are doing now Pheebs. Just let he out when she wants to go and just leave her to it :) If she keeps whining alot then you might want to talk to the vet about her being in pain and see if you can get something for the pain.

One thing (dunno if it's been mentioned) - get some recommended food for her.

Apparently dog food is unpoliced so they fill it with e-numbers, which is obviously bad for them but it also sends then in to a barking frenzy.

Recently (well Christmas) my sister bought a lovely choc lab and fed it on stuff recommended by the breeder (some expensive brand name like pedigree chum), but when she asked the vet, they told her to get proper stuff by order. They also said that if they eat meat to give the remains to the dog.

We have recommended food! Hooray! The price of it however... booooooo!

Still, for her, anything :)

Trio is back to normal! YAAAAAAAAAAAY! This is good news! She slept like a baby last night (although without me realised snuck onto the bed once or twice during the night! Nawty puppy dawg) and yeh. 100% herself :D

Still... under vets orders she's being kept calm and no long walks. Boo!

Bit sad for her still though as she's not limping/having any problems etc... and yet we can't take her out for her fav long walks at the moment :(

Playing fun games with her like "find it" instead where she's not running round like a loon. Poor baby. She loves running round like a loon :(

vix

I was gonna say how do you keep a dog like Trio calm?! Poor sausage.

Pheebs

She's doing well! No longer limping or anything! Took her to the vets for her check up and he was happy which is good news!

We still have to do 5-10mins walks on lead (though allowed to let her off to trot about and sniff... just no running or nowt). The time will increase 5 mins every couple of weeks until she's just over 1years and then things can go back to normal.

I am having a slight problem with her though. I try to play with her in the morning (spend 15 - 20mins playing training games like "find it" or training her to bring me certain items or sitting/stand/down/roll over commands) and then play some more training games mid morning, then take her out for her 5min walk around lunch time, then mid afternoon play some more training games and then Pickys home and she gets to play with him for a bit.

My problem is she is attention seeking sooooooo much. I almost feel like I'm not giving her enough and realise she's going to have more energy considering she's not get her 45min walks anymore but... I just don't know what to do!

I need to work... so when trainings over I try and give her a kong with grub in it to play with but within 20mins she's bored, will trot over to me and paw me. If I pay no attention she'll try scrambling up me so I try and ignore her some more and eventually after about 10mins she will give up, walk off, lie down and sigh. I feel *awful*. :(

Is she being over attentiony or am I being a poopy owner and not giving her enough stimulus? We have every blooming toy possible for her which she'll sometimes play with by herself but 90% of the time will want us to play with her. She pretty much has access to outside all of the time but tends not to go outside unless I go with her (driving me loopy now).

Any ideas people?

I have just spent 45 minutes on the phone to a chap called Rob (he does Dog Borstal show apparently! I felt a bit of a div when he mentioned it as I didn't have a clue!)

What an incredibly superb chap and my crikey have I learned sooo much!

Dog food... well... I'm changing ours again! He went through what was put into it - even Royal Canin which we've been advised to go on to... it's full of... really awful stuff!

As for her attention seeking and what not, he's given me some advice and ideas to go on but explained to me that dogs normally spend 17hours odd sleeping a day and don't *need* the stimulus unless you give it to them (they will keep going as long as you do kind of thing) And so, if you give them lots and lots to do and give them too much attention you'll start to get behavioural issues. (We went into more depth with this - sooo interesting). Anyway, alls well. I feel better. Am riled at some of the information I have been taught (really can't believe it - he's said to look on the internet about what's in dog food just to show me what all those long jumbly words on the back of dog food packets actually mean... had a quick glance and zomg! It's awful!)

Good chap. Best intentions. Really rallying to get this diet stuff out in the open (after the Kennel Club show on BBC slating pedigree dogs - what a shocker that was). He's pushing it with Dog Borstal so I'm going to watch with great anticipation what's showed and not on the BBC (loads is cut bare in mind).

Genius man. Lovely lovely chap.

Labrador sighs are just the worst, especially when theyre sulking! :'(
Thought I would share some of Marchants (the child I look after) dog Star, hes 6 now, and is still just as nuts as when they got him. I live upstairs from Marchant so Star spends most of his evenings with me.

Aww lovely pics Knip!

Big hugs to Trio and Pheebs. Poor pup but lucky too to have such loving parents to make sure she is getting the best care possible. Glad you caught the hip problem early and behavioral advice sounds good too - good luck for the continued training :)

P.s. caught on on the pedigree dogs program the other night and was disgusted! I have always been a lover of more "dog-shaped" dogs & mongrels and disliked overbreeding, but the callousness of some breeders and the lack of awareness &/or control by the Kennel Club was disgraceful! Grrrr!

Sounds interesting stuff Pheebs :) Glad she's on the mend!
Star looks lovely Knip :D

I didn't watch the program on pedigree dogs but I've been looking lately at a few animal rescue sites at dogs, and it's ridiculous just how many perfectly fine dogs are listed on there because the breeders just didn't want them for a variety of minor issues :/ So callous. Pedigree dogs have never really appealed to me, but they certainly don't now!
