View Full Version : How blind are you?

So I went to the opticians yesterday for an eye test.

Very thorough lad who checked my vision, reckoned I had very healthy eyes and told me they were slightly worse than the prescription on my current specs (which are about 5.5 years old).

So I checked out the numbers he was writing down and his expert evaluation was that my right eye was -4.25 and my left was -5.25.

Is that bad?

I mean, I know that I'm pretty much blind without my cybernetic implants connected (even need them to read a book and can't see what's on my PC screen(s) without them)...

Anyhoo, how blind is everyone else? Can I be trumped because them figures look pretty high (or low)...

-6.50 in one eye and -6.75 in the other one.

Christ, I thought I was bad.

-4.00 Right and -4.5 left. I can't read the big letter at the top of the chart at the opticians, you must struggle to see the chart Feek :p

Can't find my prescription at the mo, but I think it's extremely close to yours. What's worrying is I can read the smallest line on the chart without my glasses, and the bloke always says I have 20:20 vision without them. Makes me scared to fly, I tell thee!

For some reason, the last couple of times my prescription has changed, it's changed for the better!

There's a chart?

All I see is a blur when I look at it uncorrected, but corrected I can read the bottom line. Which is how it should be :)

Pretty much the same - always amazes me the difference.
My eyes seem to have finally settled down with very little change in the last 3 or 4 years. I'm seriously considering laser treatment. Will probably cost a bob or two as I would imagine the cheapest treatment won't be suitable for astigmatism. Gonna book an appointment at Optical Express soonish to suss it out.

Left Eye = -0.75

Not really bad at all but I always wear either my lenses or glasses.. since I discovered the edges of things I quite like them :D

This may be a stupid question, but surely glasses last for your whole life? Is it just the daily knocks?

;D Yeah the edges of things can be quite nice :p
That's one thing that makes me not overly keen on my contacts, it makes things ever so slightly fuzzy so edges just aren't as defined as they should be. It's the best they can offer for me though thanks to my astigmatism. It's fine for nights out but it's what would put me off always using them so I get out of the habit then.

Have you tried toric lenses, Jen? I tried them for a bit but didn't find them comfortable but they made a huge difference over standard lenses.

Your prescription changes throughout your life but is normally pretty stable during your 20s-40s.

I'm +3.50 in both eyes with an astigmatism. First long sighted person here :o

I use Toric lenses and can see fine with them, no blurring at all (until my eyes get tired and/or dry out).

Hmm I dunno, got em tested the other day now have to wear glasses in the evening (when eyes are tired) or if I'm using the puter all day I should wear them. I only need them to see anything over about 2-3meters tho...

I have a fair astigmatism too and the contacts clear that up no problem. If your vision is blurry that implies you've got the wrong corrective strength. Your contacts should not be the same strength as your glasses are.. off the top of my head my left contact lense is a point or two stronger than my glasses lense, to achieve the same corrective strength. When I got my first pair of contacts, which were based on my glasses prescription, they sat me down and did a repeat eye-check and identified that the change needed made.

For those of you reporting that contacts make your eyes dry or tired, I can highly recommend "Blink (http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details.jsp?productid=1031337&classificationid=1046446)", great for re-moisturising eyes and helping feel fresh again :)

I'll have to give that a try, thanks Garp. I tried some other drops (can't remember what they were called) but they weren't much good - helped a little for about an hour or so.

I'm slowly going blind I think. Never worn glasses or had regular eye tests as I always thought my eyes were fine until I starting sharing a car with vix and realised that she could read the road signs a lot earlier than I could.

Had a test about 18 months ago and the optician reckoned that I didn't 'need' glasses but it wouldn't do any harm if I got some. (no idea what the numbers mean but i've still got my prescriprtion laying about so I could look them up) I never got around to getting any and since then I think my eyes have got worse so I could do with getting tested again and maybe doing something about it.

They're the ones I use, still doesn't feel as clear as my glasses. :(

Garp: They're not the same strength as my glasses, went through quite a selection of strengths when I was interested in going for contacts. The ones I've got are the nearest I could get.

These were D & A value, the ones I really wanted were obscene money with the posh lenses I have :(

I tried contacts, but they couldn't get the prescription right as I couldn't give an accurate enough response to their questions - because I have 20:20 vision. I'm just wierd I know ;D

I don't understand this, you have 20:20 vision without your glasses and can read the bottom line, but your eyes are -4.25 and -5.25 (ish)? How does that work?

My eyes are crap, -5 -6 + major astigmatism. Does my head in no end, contacts can't fully correct it without them being stupidly expensive (i mean there already £30 a month) and i can actually read anything but big font without my glasses, although unlike feek i can see the chart (i find that weird, but i sort of have to struggle and kinda focus, i think that stems back to having a slight lazy-fu**ing-eye too though....).

Really annoys me though because i love loads of sports and feel like i'm kinda held back by not being able to see properly... Ie swimming is hilarious, im good at it, but i dont see much, mountain biking i miss the odd rock at high speed coming downhill, and has resulted in me knocking myself out more than the average person, and the list goes on... If theres one thing i could change it would defo be my eyes, as long as i could guarantee they wouldn't get worse (which laser surgery cant, plus they dont look at people with my crappity eyes!)

Possibly a weakness in the muscles that control the focus etc.? you can do without glasses but the muscles are working overtime so it gives you a headache after 20 minutes.

The glasses just make life a bit easier on the muscles :p

I'm just guessing and have no idea if that's even possible.

Jonny69

-3 in left and -2.75 in right. This is annoying because it seems to be that point where you now can't do anything without your glasses including reading, shaving safely, brushing teeth etc. At least when they were a bit weaker I was still blind but I could read without my glasses on.

It's probably close, though I'd raise some doubt over it being the muscles that are the cause.

The problem with that approach is that the eyes get lazy - once you start wearing glasses you'll soon find you can't do without them at all.

The numbers quoted are the sphere values in diopters. The second column is the cylinder.
As you might expect the sphere moves objects (apparently) nearer or further away from you and the cylinder shifts them left or right.
(I used to work at a glazers QA'ing the lenses)
If you use bi or varifocals then your prescription will be split into near vision and distance vision. More detail here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyeglass_prescription

My scrip is something like -2.25,-/-1.75,0.5
But at my last check at work I was advised that I may need that beefed up a bit :(

I really should buy a new pair of glasses as my current pair will be 8 years old this year and the anti-glare coating is scratched to hell. Can't bring myself to buy a pair though, I've looked in all the highstreet stores and can't find one single pair that I like (I hate wearing glasses), I wear contacts 6 days a week and because of my prescription I'm looking at spending ~£300 on ultra thin lenses with another £120 on frames :( £420 seems like a hell of a lot of money when I can survive in my old knackered pair.
