View Full Version : Gordon Ramsay: Cookalong Live
Anyone seen the adverts for this??
Basically, he's doing a 3 course meal cooked live on Friday 18th Jan and you cook it with him. There will be some web tutorials on the basics a few days in advance for people to watch before the big show. Just thought it might be a good idea for those budding chefs ;) amongst us.
Looks really good, but it's a meal for 4 people and there are only 2 of us. Will wait to see if I can half the ingredients because I'd really like to have a go at this :)

Oh, I've just found the menu:
Starter
Scallops with tomato salsa
Main
Steak and chips with a rocket and Parmesan salad
Dessert
Chocolate mousse
Not particularly adventurous, but I fancy having a go at the scallops and I'm absolutely sure I can halve that. Just interested in having a go for curiosity's sake :D
[edit] Actually on second thoughts... if I'm cooking all this in an hour, I really wouldn't WANT to do much more, hehe.

Main course does it for me, yum yum

I saw the ads and thought it was a good idea, although with only me here it would be pointless.
Hehe, steak is ALWAYS a winner, but I know how to cook it so I wasn't so excited about that! His chips are parboiled and then oven roasted... it says in his cookbook :p I thought he was doing chocolate something when I saw the equipment list, because it said the glass bowl had to fit snugly into a saucepan. Does look like a nice menu and I have a lot of the ingredients already... but not the expensive stuff. Boooo!
It's something I would like to try, but I don't have a TV within good view of the kitchen :/
No me either. Going to have to codge something together :D
Sounds like a good idea, though I imagine I'll watch it and try something out later.
I always find his timings a little too close to 'blue' for my taste :s
I'll be sitting there watching but probably eating something else because of a veggie / fish allergy mismatch, so I probably won't be following the recipe :(
I read the programme as being on the 18th at 9pm. Surely this can't be right, i think i must be missing something somewhere. Looks good but with just me it's not worth doing. I remember these sort of programmes from years ago, I also remember the episode of butterlflies where Ria tries to copy the TV cook and gets it all wrong :)
She always got it wrong. Full stop :D

Was it the galloping gormet that this is a newer version of? I never saw the gormet show but remember the concept.

Hope you've put name down Kate! :D
Hope you've put name down Kate! :D
I can tell everyone now... I did apply and had an interview last Tuesday followed by a screen test on Friday. They've been umm'ing and ahh'ing about it all bloody week and finally rang me up tonight to tell me I didn't make it. Nevermind :)

awww sorry to hear that Kate :(
I'm not honestly that bothered. It wasn't the being on TV bit that attracted me, it was getting the chance to cook and interact with a bit of an idol of mine. I got an email today saying I could apply to be in the audience, but it's just too late notice to make it down there now. Bit peeved that they left it so long, but that's media... apparently :D
Maybe they thought too many people would be watching your norks and not the cooking ;D
Just finished the scallops and fair play they were bloody lovely, Kate cooked them to perfection
The camera work is making me feel ill :/
No need for it at all.
/grump
;)
Well that was bloody lush from start to finish.

I watched Die Hard 2 instead :D
mmmmmm...
Plane fricasse...

:D
(On a culinary note I cooked Chicken in Mustard and Mayonnaise for dinner and it was yummy :))
Really really enjoyed myself last night. No way would a novice have been able to keep up unless they'd done all the prep beforehand. Glad I did some and made the salad dressing in advance etc.
Suprisingly beautiful meal. I thought it'd be good, but not THAT good. The scallops were absolutely perfect and that salsa that went with them was amazing. Definitely using that again with fish. Steak was fantastic, and I picked up a few good tips there. Potato wedges were a really easy dish that you could serve with almost anything, and the salad would be perfect for BBQ's etc. And as for the chocolate mousse.... MMMMM!!!
Definitely will be cooking that again :)
Sounds like you did well Kate! Hope more shows are done like this, I'd have loved to have had a go.
Would definitely do it again and would definitely cook it for mates. Only prob is that good steak and scallops are damn expensive. Beautiful though!!
it looked great fun! delicious too! however he overcooked the steak!! we'd make a good double team I reckon Kate! ;)
I took our steaks out earlier than he did because he said he was doing them medium. They were pretty much spot on!! I completely agree with you ;) We'll have to re-create it some time :D
Trying to upload a couple of pics, but internet is being stupid so I'm going to cut things down in the garden instead :)
Right, couple of pics.. the red X's will disappear as and when my files finally get uploaded. Connection is AWFUL today.
Preparing by getting all the equipment I needed out.

Set the table (ignore the car seat in the corner ;) )

Starter... errrm.... I started eating and then realised I hadn't taken a pic, so sorry it looks a bit messy. OMG it was gorgeous though!

Main. Steak looked SOOO much nicer than it came out on the pic. Tasted divine too.
http://www.lostkat.co.uk/DSC00639.jpg
Choc mousse with bits of honeycomb..... NOM!!!!!!

Wish I'd taken more pics, but just didn't have time. Thanks to Pickers and Pheebs for your texting support throughout :D
OOO Kate looks fabulous!
Well done! :D
BB x
Yummeh! Looks great. Did you eat it all at the end then or have to scoff whilst cooking?
Just out of interest, what is the car seat doing in your living room? :)
Scoffed whilst cooking. There was plenty of time in between to eat it :)
Leon jetwashed it, brought it in to dry and it's been in the house ever since
Wen went to a friends for dinner last night and our other friends there waere actually on the show doing some tasting for one of the cooks. Didn't see the programme though so didn't get to see them.
Wow, just looked though the FaceBook pics of everyones attempts and yours was definately the best looking!!! How did people manage to burn things when they are being told what to do :/
lol thanks. I wasn't too strong on the presentation... I was just trying to get it out the kitchen on time :D God knows how people managed to burn stuff. Loads of people fudged up the potatoes too and I've absolutely no idea how. I did them again last night. 3 min parboil, 30 mins in oven, perfect. HOW did they muck it up?
The bloke who set up the group has been practicing all week and he managed to bugger up all 3 courses!! hehe
I don't think people were actually listening to Gordon and maybe left some steps out??? It wasn't exactly difficult, just fast-paced. Helped that I'd read the recipes etc. beforehand though.
Well it did say you'd need preparation. I couldb't believe the state of some people's. Even the desserts looked manky.
The repeat is on tonight and I wanted to watch it but Phil is watching the snooker. Boooo.
The dessert was SOOO easy, but I notice that he didn't take his chocolate off the saucepan when he took it off the heat, so it didn't cool down much. I think that's where people mucked theirs up. Overwhipped the cream and the choc was still too warm.

Watched the repeat for this, i was going to cook along it looked fun, but i went out for a mates 21st instead, and ate a kebab on the way home. He wouldn't be proud of me!
To make up today i made a perfect home-made double layer cottage pie though :D I may try the scallops if I'm feeling overtly flush (which as a student i never really am).
Damn the camera work was hard work to watch :D

Starter
Warm goat's cheese salad with an apple and walnut vinaigrette
Main course
Salmon en croute with herbed new potatoes and garlic sautéed broccoli
Dessert
Caramelised rhubarb and ginger crumble with clotted cream
Personally not my cup of tea, don't really like Goats Cheese, not a fan of Salmon and I hate Rhubarb.
Like the sound of the Broccoli though. Yummo!!
Also, rather bizarrely, he's chosen Rhubarb completely out of season (Spring).

I'm with you there Nokkon, though I really do like Rhubarb :) the rest not so much ;D
I only like the main. HATE ginger!!!

Kept meaning to post about this :)
Mmm love salmon so will be watching for that. Obviously can't join in :/
That main does sound very nice. That starter tho... isn't that on the list at the HA HA place in Brum for Xmas?!
Might do starter and main. I'm not really a fan of rhubarb though. From what he said on Jonathan Woss last night, there are going to be a few of these, including a budget one. It's all to go with his new recipe book on entertaining people. Will be interesting to watch and might pick up a few tips along the way :)
I'll give this one a miss. Salmon is one of the few fishes that I don't like and I'm not madly keen on rhubarb.
See the last one he did... the filming was awful. Proper awful like. As in... we had to turn it off half way through.
God knows who was directing the cameras but my God they must have been on HUGE caffeine rush. "CAMERA1-CAMERA2-BACKTOCAMARA1-ZOoOOoOM-CAMERA3 then 4 and then 1- ZOOM OUT!-CAMERA 5-CAMERA2 Twist IT Twist it!-CAMERA 4 RUN PAST!!"
Honestly. Was mental. Has completely put me off of watching the program.

;D;D
I didn't watch the first one and the only thing from this that I would be interested in is the main, but as Kate said it might be worth watching to see if there are tips or stuff to learn (and to see if Pheebs camera director is still there ;D )
I warn you now then to not drink alcomahol prior to watching as you will fall over with dizziness (and this is coming from a lady who went on a rollercoaster riddled with a dozen loop the loops and corkscrews 3 times in a row after half a pizza and a huge coke drink in America and didn't feel in the slightest squeewy).
Silly director.

There was a show on Sir Alex Ferguson picking some talented footballers for a special prize, it used the same style and I too just turned it off. I don't know how anyone can think that that style works.
we did it tonight, though half as there were only 2 of us.
and we had no rubarb so im currently tucking into an apple and blackberry crumble *drool*
salmon en creute (sp?) worked out quite well and tasted far better than i expected, i've never really been a huge fan of salmon and this worked really really well.
We watched it, but I'd had a ****ty day and we've got a fridge full of food due to a week with no gas, so I decided not to do it. It all looked gorgeous, despite me initially not being sure about the pudding. The salmon looked gorgeous! Think I'll be doing that tomorrow :)
Glad you liked it all karbon
That salmon looked really nice, as did the starter. Patsy Kensit was quite amusing as well :)
Did the salmon en croute last night with jacket sputs and oven roast veg. Really simple, yet tasty recipe. The only things I had to buy in addition to what I normally have was the fresh dill and the pastry.
I was never a fan of salmon when I was little. I always found it a bit boring and bland. However, now I've started cooking it myself, I love it. I've found that it has to be with something else to give it more flavour though, such as stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes, anchovies, garlic & basil or rubbed with a cajun spice mix and grilled. We have it quite a lot now.
