When I checked my bank account online at the end of December to check if my salary had been paid, there was a lot more than there should have been. Since I was away (still am), I didn't have access to my payslip so I asked my gorgeous flatmate to scan it and e-mail it to me. It showed that my NI contributions for the entire year (£2086.00) had been refunded. "Ayyup", I thought, "that's not right" so I e-mailed the co-ordinator in Aberdeen and asked him to investigate and find out what the wages people (Active Payroll) intended to do about it before I was tempted to spend it.
I got this e-mail from our finance department today:
You will have noticed that in your December pay that you had a large refund of your National Insurance contributions for 2007/2008.
This is as a result of you earning “substantially” most of your earnings overseas. After a 52 week period we cannot take legally take these contributions if substantially all your earnings are earned overseas.
You can elect to pay minimum Class 2 contributions in UK if you wish, this is I believe £2 per week roughly if you don’t make normal contributions, this will retain benefits such as job seekers etc.
BACK OF THE NET MY SON. :D
I knew there had to be some benefit from working overseas. Because of the way I am paid (flat rate salary plus day rate for days away from home), about two thirds of my wages are earned outside the Uk.
All I need to do now is figure out how I'm going to spend it. I have a few ideas - none of which involves donations to you lot :p
Nice one :D

Oooh you could...
none of which involves donations to you lot :p
Oh.....never mind. :p
All the yachties used to get all their money tax free the gits (so even a little stewardess earning £25k would be net/gross amount!). It's great that you got it back. I applied to get it back as I was working abroad a lot but I wasn't entitled to it :(
All I can say is, drinks are on you! :D So there is an advantage of working away from it all. At least you get decent weather. :)

Not that its a huge amount but you might want to check the effect on your state pension if this is going to happen more than the odd year
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/PensionsAndRetirement/FinancialPlanningForRetirement/DG_10021384
Upshot is you will need to have paid 30 years NI to get state pension (right now its 44 but its changing in 2010.

Fixed;)
Enjoy the windfall/tax dodge, Stan.
I'm not sure why, but I really think you should give it to Feek for a new boiler. No idea why that idea popped into my head though  :p

;D
And if Feek's boiler doesn't suit (no idea where I got that idea from) then there's always paying off my loan. I just need to find £1526. ;)

Why is that so tempting :o - although, I do think Pumpkinstew's correction is more accurate :D
/Must fight addiction.
Did someone mention something about a boiler? I think the only person in need of a boiler is Feek but he didn't mention it :dunno:
Mighty fine turnip farm you could start up with that.
