View Full Version : Band of Brothers. Well I never.
It's been maybe three years since I watched Band of Brothers last and I've just stuck the first episode on.
It's surprising how many of the actors I recognise now from stuff they've done since and I think a load of them are English, playing Americans. There's the chief skin from This is England who was also in Snatch, there's someone else who was in either Snatch or Lock Stock, others who I have no idea what their names are or what they've been in since but who I recognise, but the most surprising one....
With a really bad american accent as Sergeant Evans....

I nearly fell out of my chair :D
Anyway, I'll do it all over the next couple of weeks, really looking forward to watching them all again. Great series.

I really need to finish the series as VM took it off the choice on demand service :'( will need to find a way to source the last 4-5 episodes.
Brilliant series. Hits home with the real people talking at the end. You know what you saw was what happened. But yeah I noticed Simon Pegg bopping around with his phoney accent.

Watched them all in full 1080p georgeousness recently.
Haven't seen them in an while and they still rock.
I was wondering as I watched the first one tonight whether there's an HD version available or were you upscaling?

There is - they're pretty large though. Between 8 and 12gb.
Ripped from HD-DVD. :D

But Pegg's accent can't be as bad as Ewan McGregors in Black Hawk Down. ;)
Now that's a set that would make me buy an HD player!

Not cheap and very out of print though. :(
I still want....
Oddly enough, I just started (again!) reading D-Day, by the same author. his books are well worth a read, as long as you have time.
But yes, the series rocked. Peggs accent is cack. McGregors is worse. Sir Sean Connery is worst. ;D

His Russian one?
His Russian one?
Russian was it?
In fact, his English and Irish accents are up there too.

Superb viewing and very moving. I manged to see this first time last year on demand.
They'll make a simular production from English perspective one day. BoB and Saving Private Ryan would have you thinking that only the Americans fought this war.
Operation Market Garden was split in to 2 parts iirc:
The Market was Airborne who where instructed to sieze bridges and tactical points en-route. The Garden was the British army ground forces, spearheading the advance.
I'm not sure what English perspective could be used that hasn't already been covered by The Longest Day. We had a few brilliant people and a lot of old-fashioned officers.

Great series. Another English actor I spotted but who does a pretty good Yank accent was Damian Lewis.

Just incase people aren't already aware. Those of us with on demand can now watch Band of Brothers in HD :D
Will be finishing the series next week me thinks ;)
Absolute sheer GENIUS series.
I loved every episode without fail and think it should be compulsory watching, along with Schindlers List to all students.

But what about the Battle of Britain spread out over a dozen one hour episodes with Hollywood production values?
I've had the DVD boxset for a few years now, but have finally got the HD version *cough* 48gb worth *cough* :D Will be watching them over the bank holiday weekend :D

Did you not read (http://www.boat-drinks.co.uk/showpost.php?p=203109&postcount=20) this post???? ;D
Bumpy bumpy - I'm just watching it again and have spotted Danny Blue from Hustle!
(also known as Elton from Doctor Who)
Really looking forward to Pacific, that's why I'm watching these all again now in glorious High Def.
Looks like you can get the HD Blu Ray for an absolute steal on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Band-Brothers-HBO-Complete-Blu-ray/dp/B001DEAAIY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1267741184&sr=8-1
Just GBP17.99 (US costs more than double that, at $56!!!!)
Got the blu-ray metal box set the other month second hand, haven't got round to watching them yet. Save it for the next few weeks when I won't have internet or sky.
Also pacific starts in a few weeks, although I'm going to have to wait for it to come out on blu-ray as I am not subscribing to sky movies.

But I also want a £50 DVD (magic... three dvds... it's irresistable)
/needs more money!
Boo!
Love this series! I think... Karls not seen it. Or someone up here hasn't. I was all gawpy! Will find out who it was and introduce them to it when I eventually get round to picking up the box set :)
This is one of history's greatest pieces of cinematography ever produced for television.
Anybody who is yet to see it - shame on you, and ENJOY :D
A friend of mine in the special effects industry worked upon one very poigniant scene of an episode- it was brilliant to hear stories of the production of such an epic work.

I love it when watching older stuff and realising that somebody now famous was in it.
Laurence Fishburne was in Apocalypse Now. Shia LaBeouf was in Bobby (and played exactly the same character as in Eagle Eye and Transformers).

Aaah yes Mr Teatime! You are right lots of Brits playing Americans in it, Ross McCall (Liebgott) and Robin Laing (Heffron) were particularly good at the accent I never would have guessed they were Brits if I hadn't looked up the cast. In fact at looking at the cast again there are loads I never would have known were British. A great series there aren't many better (if any).
Oh and Damian Lewis is lovely.... :o;D
I'll confess, I've never seen it :)
Bought it 2 weeks ago on DVD for £20 after reading the book
