I almost forgot until my Mam reminded me tonight but it's my Goddaughter's birthday on Tuesday - I am a bad Godfather :(
I need to get her something special. I thought about a special bit of jewellery. Mam says she has bracelets and necklaces and stuff. Toys are no use, she has tons and that's not the sort of thing I want to get her anyway. Clothes are no use either as her Mam practically llives in Next.
I want to get her something that says "My Godfather bought me this - it's special". I'm sorry to say that since I moved away I don't see her enough to know what she likes - I need some help.
Anybody have any ideas?
Budget would be around £100 but, for the perfect gift, I'd happily double that and more - so let's not skimp.
I still like the idea of jewellery but it needs to be something that no-one else will have got her. She's a really special little girl and she deserves something cool.
I have a charm bracelet which I keep adding to. It was started for me when I was really young. Maybe you could do something similar? Then each birthday and christmas you can get a charm to add to it?
The trouble with anything valuable for a kid of that age is that they'll break it. No matter how strong it is, it'll get bust and with jewellery you're increasing that chance a lot because just by nature, it's not very strong.

I suggested that but somebody else beat me to it :(
I just spoke to my Mam after Kelly suggested a jewellery box and it seems she doesn't have one. Mam says a musical box would be good as she likes that sort of thing. I like silver, so let's look for a silver musical jewellery box.
Its not musical but this (http://www.gettingpersonal.co.uk/engraved-gifts/Antique-Silver-Plated-Jewellery-Box.htm) looks good :)
*returns to hunting*
There are some gorgeous musical boxes here (http://www.silverjoutlet.com/prodpage.cfm?CategoryID=29785) but none are silver :/

Now we're talking.
Those look lovely. Doesn't need to be silver, just special.
Thanks Sam.
Like Sam I can't see any silver music boxes these (http://www.deanorgans.co.uk/musical_jewellery_boxes1.htm) are nice too though :)
Is this the sort of thing you had in mind stan?

;D
I found that one at several sites but, to me, it isn't something that in 10 or 20 or 30 years she'll hang on to...I know it is for a kid, but it just seems a little too kiddy if that makes any sense...
I think i might get Georgie that music box for her 2nd birthday aas its so sweet and i still have my box i had when i was 6.
I like the fact it has a heart on the front which is ideal to engrave who bought it and when.
I really like the other ones but i think they're too grown up for a 5yo.
well they are for my friends girls but its hard to tell as some girls are very grown up aren't they?
Although I agree that the ones Sam and Mubs posted might be a bit old for her right now, they're something that she's more likely to keep as she gets older. My Mum made sure that anything precious I was given was always looked after so that it would still be in good condition when I got old enough to appreciate it.
There's a very pretty one in the link that Mubs posted that has a ballerina on the lid and inside. I had a ballerina musical jewellery box when I was little and I loved it. Unfortunately, it was a kiddy one so I didn't look after it and by the time I reached 15 or so, it got chucked. I'd definitely go for one of the more grown up ones if it's something you want her to cherish.

That's pretty much my line of thinking. If I get her a cheap kiddy one, she'll not want to keep it when she grows up. If I get her a good quality non-kiddy one now, she should hopefully look after it, knowing that it's something special and it'll hopefully be something she'll treasure as she gets older.
Malc, I bought her a huge dolls house for her christening gift - she loves it and plays with it all the time.
Im going to buck the trend a little here but how about a little trust fund? I know it's not something tangiable that she can appreciate now but if she has a nice little lump sum coming to her when she's 18/21/whatever she'll be thrilled Im sure :) 5 year olds have very little appreciation for anything...in fact come to think of it 10 year olds dont have much more.
Just a thought :)
That's a better idea in my opinion Pebs, I'm going by experience of LMF when she was five and certainly had no appreciation for quality items.

She already has one. She has more money in the bank than I do
It was started when she was born and is intended as a college/university fund.

Thats a fantastic idea our kids have one from Iain's parents and can add to it whenever we want.
Okie Stan - Bare with me for a few moments... I'm trying to find the webby for it.
When we were in Rudesheim (Germany) they had THE MOST GORGEOUS hand carved toys/musical toy boxes and all sorts. They were beautiful and well .... although they were for kiddies adults would buy them too (I did ;D) Not cheap but not too expensive... they did a whole shop dedicated to the nutcracker and... yeh one minute, I'll find it.... you have to see it!
*searches/calls ma and pa*
Right! Found it!
Kathe Wohlfahrt (https://shop.wohlfahrt.com/startseite_shop2/startseite_shop2.cfm?pSessionSessionID=53525363-de-4642449113012008;eshop;2&pSessionKundenID=0&pSessionSprachID=1&pfolderFrom=world2004&pwaidentid=eshop&pwastufeid=2)
This place is AMAZING! The stuff they do is phenomenal and the quality is out of this world! Really gorgeous, very personal and somewhat different gifts!
A lot of it is Christmas themed as that is what Rudesheim specializes in, but if you want something very special I think a Christmas ornament/musical box or something of the like would be perfect as it would be used with love every year and in thought of you at a very wonderful time of year :) (I'm such a sop!)
My parents bought my sisters baby a cuckoo clock from here... similar to this one I think:

As an example of what they do here's some items:
This below is what they call a "pyramid"! They're SO AMAZING - when the wind catches them/you turn the top all of the parts move and it looks beautiful! This one is a more complex model but the simple ones are gorgeous too! (*warning* they tend to range between 600 - 3000 euros!)

More simple one:

Their musical boxes are supremely stunning - I have a small one for christmas and I love it so much! Here's a few of them:

They also do the nutcrackers as mentioned above (though they do look a little scary!):

Other stuff includes ornaments and wooden christmas decorations (of which I purchased a few of as they're superb!)
I hope you like the webby! It's superb and well... just that little bit different!
Only problem is, they may take 1 - 2 weeks to come. My parents said the delivery was surpisingly quick though and packaged amazingly!
How about a christening bangle for an older child? they last years i can still get mine on.
You could get it engraved inside saying its from you for her 5th b'day maybe.
