View Full Version : Help with leads and stuff (Surround Sound)
Hello! :D
So... have a surround system thingy... and the dude gave me an HDMI cable to connect to the tv... good. So playing a dvd the sound comes out the surround sound speakers. Ace .
Does anyone know if you can get the surround sound to work through the tv?? Do I need another cable to do this?
Please help!

You'll need to find out what audio outputs the TV has, and what input the surround sound has. Ideally you want digital connections but a surprising number of TVs omit them. A few TVs lack even analogue audio outputs and for those you may have to do trickery involving a SCART adapter - hopefully you don't have one of those.
If unsure post the make/model of each unit and we can try and find manuals online.
Set this up on my parents system over Chrimbo. For a system obtained on the high street they've done remarkably well actually, though I can't help but think they got oversold for what they use it for.
Thanks Mark :)

OK, assuming those are correct, this cable looks like it'll do the business:

Though you'd do just as well with a cable half that price. I have a spare. Want? Its 1.2m long I think.
PS - checking prices online it looks like around £15 for a new one, which my spare is, though without the packaging. Sorry for being miserly but as the spare is new I can't really give it away (I will of course accept offers). :)
Is £15 including p&p an offer?
If so yes please! :)
Thanks for your help Mark!

Posted. Should be there tomorrow hopefully. :)
Easy connection guide - When you get it home, look around the back of the TV for Optical Digital Audio Out (may also be labelled S/PDIF Out), and the corresponding input on the back of the Surround Sound system. The connectors may be covered with small plastic caps which stick out of the socket - if so, grasp and pull these caps off both sockets. Gently pull off the cap from the end of one plug, orient the plug to match the socket (it will only fit one way) and insert. Repeat with the other end. You'll then need to follow the manual to select the relevant input on the surround sound. :)
